Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Enigk's biggest claim to fame is his involvement with "Emo (music) emo rock band Sunny Day Real Estate Sunny Day Real Estate, who released five albums from 1993 to 2000, in which he served as lead singer, co-songwriter and guitarist. He was often cited as progenitors of today's emo music. This singing style is now widespread among current emo vocalists, though Enigk has sought to distance himself from these types of bands. Jeremy Enigk returns with the quick follow up to last years highly acclaimed World Waits called The Missing Link which features brand new material along with acoustic version from World Waits.

Think of it as a 4-song ep with five bonus tracks. That being said, the four new songs are strong and don't stray too far from the places explored on his previous album, "World Waits." "Chewing Gum" has quickly become my new personal favorite, with Enigk's voice floating in on a cloud of strings and acoustic guitar, crescendoing to an achingly glorious, yet still subtle climax before floating away as it began. The five "live in the studio" tracks, all culled from material from "World Waits," are nice. They give a good impression of the kind of energy one can expect from Jeremy's live shows, but they are neither essential nor definitive versions (though the version of "Canons" found here is pretty invigorating). All in all, this is a very good record, but if you don't think you'll enjoy the five "live in the studio" tracks, I highly recommend purchasing the four new songs through the digital music seller of your choice.

I am a long-time, biased fan of Jeremy Enigk, Sunny Day, and The Fire Theft. The Missing Link's four unique songs, "Oh John", "Chewing Gum", "The Tatseo Show", and "On the Wayside", are beautiful and worth their chance. It took me a long time to get this album and to feel its maturity. Mr. Enigk hits a home run with The Missing Link. I hear it's crisp departure from World Waits, while having the chamber pop that OK Bear doesn't completely have.

What separates this album more than any other is the sparing nature of his voice and instruments (among many things). Mr. Enigk usually is bombastic in his vocals and here he hits his notes with ease. I would say this album EP is among the loftiest albums Mr. Enigk has created, and I wished I had found it sooner.

I'm sure many are critical of an album like this. It's not How It Feels To Be Something On or Diary. It's not The Fire Theft. When I listen to The Missing Link, I hear elements of World Waits and OK Bear, but loftier in sentiment, like songs like 'Burn', 'Heaven' 'Shark's Own Private...', and 'The Rising Tide'. What I am getting at is that The Missing Link is a more distilled transcendence that Jeremy Enigk reaches.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes any of Jeremy Enigk's music.

From the first time I heard Diary from SDRE I loved the band and Jeremys voice. It's a shame that musicians like this don't get the praise they deserve but this is a very solid record.

I am a long time fan of Enigk/s, but I felt a little gyped when I listened through this album and noticed that half of the material has already appeared on the previous album, "World Waits." For full price it simply wasn't worth it to me. Also, in my opinion the presentation of those same songs on "World Waits" was far stronger. Here they just seem like raw outtakes, which may be of value to other fans--just not to me. The few new songs on this album are decent, but they alone do not justify in my mind the $13 I shelled out in anticipation of a NEW record. I probably will not give this one another listen. A bit turned off by this experience.
