Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a well-researched collection of essays (with excellent notes and bibliography) on five disparate Islamic sects in the United States and Canada considered heretical by Sunnis and Shi'ites. The Druze are all immigrants or children of immigrants. The Ahmadis are a mix of immigrants and American converts. Moorish Science, Ansaru Allah, and United Submitters International were all founded in the 20th century in the United States; the first two have almost exclusively black membership, while the last is racially mixed. While the authors clearly sympathize with the struggle of each group to maintain a cohesive identity in American society, they do not hesitate to highlight perceived flaws: for instance, that the Ansaru Allah espouse racist doctrines. This work is accessible to general readers but will appeal most to religious scholars. For academic and large public libraries.

Book Description

"The first in-depth and objective analysis of some of the major uniquely American communities identifying themselves as . . . Islamic.  Meticulous and objective."--Tamara Sonn, St. John Fisher College
"A major contribution.... The authors have brought their extensive knowledge and previous experience to this study to achieve a work of very high quality."--Barbara Aswad, Wayne State University

Islam in the United States has developed a fascinating and diverse range of interpretations.  Based in large part on community documents and on interviews and correspondence with community members, this study is the first look at these sectarian movements in the hundred-year history of Muslim religious development in the United States.
Mainline Sunni and Shi'i response to each of the five groups examined has varied from wariness to condemnation.  Of the groups--the Druze, the Ahmadiyya Community of North America, the Moorish Science Temple of America, the Ansar Allah Community, and the United Submitters International--two have sprung up among African-Americans, two are immigrant communities that have transplanted their faith to the United States, and one, whose Egyptian leader has proclained himself a Messenger of God, is a genuine North American Islamic interpretation.
This groundbreaking book provides important insights into religion in North America and into contemporary Muslim issues of interest to students and scholars.  Not only does it raise fundamental religious questions (Who is a true believer?  Who can rightfully interpret the faith? Who decides such issues?), it also documents events from the lives of members of sectarian groups and the concerns they face in U.S. communities.

I would highly recommend this text for those searching and craving knowledge in regards to the development and growth of Islam in North America. I read this text as a main source for a paper and found it to be highly informative. It focuses on the question of what is pure islam and who practices it. It uses the Sunni faith as a barometer to gauge 5 Islamic sects found in the United States. These sects are the Druze, the Ahmadiyya Community, the Ansaru Allah Community, the Moorish Science Temple of America and the United Submitters International. The authors, Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad and Jane Idlemand Smith show the background, history, and place each sect occupies within mainstream Islamic society. It is very insightful and a must read for anyone who has an interest in Islamic issues.
