5.0 out of 5 stars Worth more than it cost March 6, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
This was an excellent book. Susan may Warren is my absolute favorite author. But since this book was published as a love inspired suspense book, I was expecting a lesser book. It was just as good as any of her others. In fact, some of the secondary characters are connected to her other books that are set in Russia. This should be a ten dollar book. Buy it. You won't regret it. :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Warren's best May 23, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The second book in the Missions of Mercy series introduces to new characters as well as brings back those from the first book as well as Warren's other series. I was actually quite intrigued with Ronie's alter ego Vonya. She sounds like a mix of Lady Gaga and an indie band. She really was into her music and I enjoyed seeing her slip into the Vonya character and be someone that no one else was expecting. Actually Ronie seemed to have three personalities. There's Vonya, then Veronica as the rich quiet girl she portrays to her family, and then Ronie, her true self. It's a lot of effort to keep up these three personalities but she seems to slip easily into all of them.

I did have one huge major qualm about this story. There is a scene where Wick goes out to find Ronie when she's dressed as Vonya. Ronie was trying to spy on a suspicious character when Wick catches her in the act. She initially refuses to go with him so he throws her over his shoulder like a caveman as she's pounded on his back to let her go. I absolutely hated this. I hate when men do this and it's supposed to be used as a romantic device. Do women really enjoy being thrown over a guy's shoulder like a sack of potatoes? All this is showing is that Wick can do this simply because he is physically stronger than Ronie. She cannot do anything because of her size and what's worse, is that she DOES find herself attracted to him after this. Again lots of eye rolling and groans.

As I said with the previous book, this format of the story does not really showcase Warren's best talent. It's a quick read with a lot of romance and some suspense. Try her other books first and then come back to this as it's more like a quick snack than a hearty meal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic suspense with great spiritual themes May 28, 2011
By Renee
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a romantic suspense enthusiast from way back when, I jumped at the chance to check out Susan May Warren's Love Inspired Suspense Series: Missions of Mercy. Susan's a prolific author, but I've only read one of her books. So I was eager to see what she would bring to the table for the romantic suspense genre. Here are the pros and cons of what her LI series has to offer . . .

First, the pros:

Exotic locations: check
Heart-stopping suspense: check
Plucky, resourceful heroines: check
Tough heroes with big hearts: check
Just the right amount of romance and humor as befits the danger: check
Perfect length for me to finish while proctoring exams: check
Strong inspirational themes: check
For a bonus, these guys are ex-military: Two checks!

Now, the cons:

As far as I could discover, she's only published three in this series.
Which definitely left me wanting more!

My favorite aspect of the Missions of Mercy Series is that the books are written from a Christian worldview. Kudos to Susan May Warren for making faith an integral part of her characters' lives. And the spiritual issues they wrestle with are not superficial. They matter in the real world. As I wrote earlier this week, when the man with the gun facing down a relentless physical enemy can also operate in the spiritual realm-now that's a great story!

This second book in the series, Mission Out of Control, features Brody "Wick" Wickham, a former Green Beret turned security agent. Wick's mission is to protect the beautiful rock star Vonya, whose edgy performances shock his sensibilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another delightful romantic suspense novel! May 1, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Mission: Out of Control was another satisfying romance from Susan May Warren. Loved the Vonya character and the real Ronie underneath the stage makeup and the fear. The hero--her bodyguard--was very manly and heroic. I could picture him in my mind's eye as he worried for her and protected her from the unknown threat to her safety. And those! I loved the insight both characters gained as they got to know each other and faced their fears together. Sparks flew when they first met, and those sparks never let up. One of the things I love most about Warren's romantic suspense novels is the layering of her characters. I love how she used their common affection for blues music to knit their hearts together. Warren's characters are always so complex, easy to empathize with, and exciting to root for. The twists and turns in this novel were well done. Nothing is easily overcome, and that always makes her stories a delight for me to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The many faces of Vonya December 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Missions of Mercy
Book 2

In this second book, we meet Brody "Wick" Wickham, whom was briefly introduced in the first book of this series. Brody had faced some tough times in his past. The things he had to do to save life are unthinkable and like nothing we can imagine from just reading a book. His boss, Chet (from the first book), has ordered him on a month-long R&R while Chet's on his honeymoon. But when the Senator approaches him to be a bodyguard for his only remaining daughter while she does a concert tour in Europe, Brody can't say no.

Veronica "Vonya" Wagner is sort of wild. She dresses in strange outfits and swings - and even lunges - while singing her rock songs. But there's more to Vonya then Wick first thinks. He learns that she is a good person with a big heart, but Vonya can't seem to keep herself out of trouble - and won't obey her bodyguard's orders!

The story was interesting and had plenty of action in it. Wick's having to save her hide over and over again is humorous. I couldn't really see a romance between these two - really - but it was still sweet at the end.

More About the Author

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I'm a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I'm an adventurer -- having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that's why my characters can't sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another -- they're too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories, that I hope inspire and entertain!
