5.0 out of 5 stars The Jazz Messengers in the 70s with some guests January 9, 2009
    Format:Audio CD
This CD is apparently compiled of LPs "Buhaina" and "Athenagin", plus one previously unissued track ("Siempre mi amor").
I don't know whether it's justified to combine tracks from different albums like this, but any album that brings together two Jon Hendricks guest spots on same CD will help me decide which "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers" album to pick up from my local CD stores...

The line up is fine and dandy - Woody Shaw (tp), Carter Jefferson (ts and ss), Cedar Walton (piano and, I am sorry to say, electric piano), Tony Waters (congas) and Mickey Bass (he plays bass - it did sound as a joke when I read it for the first time... it's like Usain Bolt - he was destined to be either sprinter or an electrician...). The guests, in addition to Hendricks, are Steve Turre, who is not very audible here, and Michael Howell (on guitar) who is...

If you like hard bop, this is a fine album for you... But I guess you knew that already? The only complaint I have is the sound of electric piano, but that's just me, advocating acoustic jazz to whomever wants to listen.
The music is recorded in 1973, so everyone involved is either still at his peak or young and fresh.

Produced by Orrin Keepnews, engineer Jim Stern. Digital remastering by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios). Art Direction: Phil Carroll. Total time 73:29.
