This review is from: Mission Impossible: Ultimate Missions Collection (Mission Impossible / Mission Impossible II / Mission Impossible III) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I see a lot of glowing reviews here for the Mission Impossible Blu-ray set. How? Why? Each disc in this set is encoded in MPEG-2 and with only a lossy DD 5.1 soundtrack. So at best here, you're only getting an upscaled DVD transfer. Well, not really, but more or less. When these are remastered to MPEG-4/AVC with lossless DolbyTrue HD 5.1 tracks, then I'll buy. Not before.

This is one of the most worthwhile blu-ray sets to get..I like cheap and amazon always seems to deliver in that respect. Another amazing buy was this one... Action Hero Collection (The Day After Tomorrow / I, Robot / The Terminator) [Blu-ray]

It's a shame that everyone focused on Tom Cruises Oprah appearance than realizing how good MI:3 was. Each director brings their own take on the Ethan Hunt character and despite a few loopholes they're enjoyable. It'as also amazing how far movie production had come from the first to the third.

MI BluRay,

If you have a Hi-Def TV and you don't have a Blu-Ray player
you have no idea what your TV can do! This Mission Impossible movie set shows you why the Panavision cameras and lenses used to film movies cost over a quarter million dollars each and the Kodak film used in them cost well over a thousand dollars a roll. The blu-ray Panasonic DMP-BD10 - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling images from this player I bought from Amazon are simply stunning! And this is a top notch action movie set.

All three MI Movies has great video shots in 1080p. The audio is superb.
This is the way all "series/ sequel" movies such as Lethal Weapon, Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc should be packaged for Blu-Ray. I have 3 Sony Blu-ray units displaying on a Sony 1080p LCD, a Pioneer 1080p Plasma & a Sony 1080p projection unit. The video is awesome on all three.

Although all three movies are very fun and enjoyable, the package itself isn't worth paying extra money for. Instead of buying this trilogy in one package, save yourself some cash and buy all three editions separately. Without even taking sale prices and such into account, the MSRP on this is $8 higher than all three products individually! Maybe they hoped nobody would notice...

MI is one of those franchises like Superman or Transformers, which lends itself automatically to HD. That might make the job of putting these titles out on HD look easy. It seems studios fall into this trap easily, without recognising a very important "difference" between the general viewer & the evolved HD fanatic. Fans of this genre form a large part of these fanatics, yours truly included.
Therefore, when I buy MI on BD, I "expect" the complete frills, bells & whistles. Pristine video transfers, sexy menus, Full HD lossless audio in both DTS (DTS is somehow lsing turf to Dolby of late) & Dolby etc. etc. We also know that transferring a full width theatre quality content to an 1080p is no big deal. So, there is no excuse for shoddy work at all! HD video must look "very good" on a HD screen, period. Unfortunately, the difference between an MI DVD & BD is almost insignificant. At least on a PANASONIC LCD. Gripes with audio quality remain with most BD transfers. Surround pans are at times too artificial & lack proper progresson / regression. MI BDs suffer from a similar fate. BDs, in general suffer from a slightly muddled center output. I do not know the exact reason behind this, but guess that the adjustments while considering a home audience are done more via pre-set algorithms, rather than by a physical SPL calibration. I may be wrong, but I have seen this happen with way too many (same titles sound different when compared between a DVD & HD-BD)titles. I am certain that most recent converts will miss these apparently trivial issues with MI & viewers of our ilk will be termed nitpickers :) But then, HD is special to us! The MI4 is due soon. Hope that will exceed our expectations.

Once again Paramount takes very good (this time 3)movies and does nothing to enhance them for blu-ray release. These movies lack a lossless soundtrack and the video transfer is borderline at best. I'm going to have to do my research when it comes to movies from this house(Paramount). They should really look into remastering their products before releasing them to the public(Especially at the prices of Blu-rays). Don't get me wrong I loved the movies as such , but Paramount is giving us a bunch of almost HD products.I should have just stayed with the DVD's.
