4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the recent Mission Impossible games, March 3, 2003
This review is from: Mission Impossible (Video Game)
For starters, this game is not for people who don't like a challenge. Second, this game is based on the 1980's revival of the show that lasted two years. Fans of this incarnation of the show will recognize the attention to detail put into this game. The game is played from a top down view with you, the player, controlling your agent on screen. I'm not going to reveal the names of the agents but your leader is of course Jim Phelps. The game itself is broken down into top down character levels and chase sequences which remind me of an episode of the show. The challenge factor for this game is really high. Each agent has their strengths and their weaknesses depending on your situation. Sometimes, though, it seems that the difficulty level was cranked up too high for some stages while others can be your typical beat'em up variety. Other than the high yet spotty challenge, this is a great game for one of the greatest game systems of all time. This review will self destruct in five seconds. Good luck, customer!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best NES Games Made. VERY DIFFICULT CHALLENGE., November 15, 2010
By
John Doe (Somewhere in New Jersey) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mission Impossible (Video Game)
Well, Mission: Impossible certainly is the right way to describe the NES game. It also gets my vote as one of the hardest games made in the history of Nintendo. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the top 15. I am glad to have beaten the game without the aid of a game genie. It took me a week in total, and I knew I had three qualities required to beat the game: determination, patience, and perseverance. Every level is brutally hard, make no mistake about it. But in fact, by dying a hundred of times and trying a level over and over, the level actually becomes easier except for level 5 which was almost too hard for me to get through. Anyway, I am going to give you my tips for each level, and what I think it's the best (also, I really, really recommend you to go to gamefaqs.com and look at the walkthroughs for this game and also on youtube under "nes mission impossible walkthrough" and "nes mission impossible speedrun;" they were invaluable sources of aid for me although the speedrun version, the guy who did it is reckless yet he shows the way of what happens next; he is invaluable as well.):
Level 1: Honestly, looking back, I have to say this is the easiest. Of course, most people will have a hard time, but really, you have to die a lot of times to get the hang of the game, and you will actually get a lot better at it. Learn how to work with Max, Grant, and Nick alternatively. Grant is the best in speed, Max is awesome with his gun, and Nick is very versatile with his boomerang and disguise. Remember that many villains move in a systemized pattern. Be sure to identify the patterns and keep them in mind the next time you restart the level. Over time, you will have them all memorized, and the level gets a lot easier this way. It's the only way to win. In level One, to save the headache, just go straight to third door on the right side and find out where you are supposed to go for the pass. At any time that you are caught (and the ghosts come to you), use Max's bombs to kill them. Pretty easy. The Molotov cocktail throwers can be avoided by using Nick's disguise, and then they can get killed in the back around way. Work on mastering the movement of the boomerang. It can do a lot of awesome diagonalizing if you move around boxes. For level One and also in others, you can really notice that, after many deaths, it is not really necessary to do everything in the map; you can make shortcuts and just reach the objective of the level to save a lot of time. It just takes a bit of strategy to do that. Notice the guy that rams to you without harming you at all...if you use one Max's bomb on him, he dies right away instead of hitting him 7 times. This is much quicker. During this level, there is a floor that is coming to connect to the other floor and also where you enter the passcode. I absolutely recommend you to go on the right side and then the right side to do what you need to do. Then, come back to the original 2 floor connector and then enter in the passcode. I say this because walking across the steps over the water with the high speed fans at you is immensely too difficult to perform and should 100% be avoided. To further stress this fact, it is also unnecessary to undergo through that way.
Level 2: Probably the easiest level of any: just keep trying until you make it. It doesn't take that long.
Level 3: In this one, forget the switch at the top left corner; just head straight for the secret statute and learn how to work through the conveyor belt. You WILL get better at it and will eventually come away unharmed through there. It's just a matter of memorizing the sequence of steps. Remember that before the metal machine is hacking down with its knife, just stand back a bit and wait until you are ready to go and GO. After passing this room, the rest is easier, and you better hope that the guy in the left room says, "Down and Left." Otherwise, it takes a while to the other room. As a word of advice, I absolutely DO NOT recommend going through the room of statutes where there is a switch at the end. It is a waste of time and absolutely unnecessary. Just skip the switch, and make sure Grant has been hit at maximum of two points. And just go straight back to the room where the machine hackers are and let Grant take the hits. If he is barely dead, just switch to Nick and the rest will be taken care of with MED Kits in the other two rooms. Another word of advice, I do not recommend Grant when doing the last three conveyor belts. He is just too fast. But instead, use Grant first until almost to the end of it, and then switch over to Max. Max equals careful, and he will make it there easy. Just make sure you have him at the farthest side away from the dump off from the belts to ensure timely reaction. Well..here we come to the Final Boss of this level. Honestly, I have to say this is the hardest room of any room of the entire game. I've read that most people couldn't beat this game because of this room. I was able to beat this room after so many attempts. This is what I learned (a few suggested that circling around the room and making the boss to fall down in the hole is the way to go; really, you have to be kidding me. The Boss is too smart for that, and it never worked for me.): Start with Grant and go down right corner and then to the bottom left corner; at the same time, look for the Boss to appear and start throwing him two gas bombs. Then keep walking around. Do the same thing again in the next one. Anytime the Boss is very close to you, start punching him as much as you can. Eventually, Grant will be low in hit points, and it's time to switch to Nick. Use his boomerang as a lot as possible. The required number of times to hit the Boss is around 11 to 12 times. I counted 9 one time, and it wasn't enough. I don't think 10 is enough either. You could use Max to hit the Boss with the gun or the bomb, but to be forewarned, it probably won't work after using Grant or Nick due to already crumbling floors, and also, if you want to use him initially, do not fire the gun twice in a row in the same place. That's a recipe for disaster. Just shoot the Boss and then move up a little bit further before doing it again. I honestly can see Max succeeding in this as long as 11 to 12 hits are made on the Boss. Plus you can leave a bomb anywhere in the room and wait for the Boss to come near it before detonating it. I must say, this is the hardest room I've been in the entire game, and it took a lot of attempts to beat this one.
Level 4: This level isn't quite as that bad as the previous one, and it could be viewed as easy as the first level with enough practice. There isn't really much to say in this level, but a couple of advices for the final Boss: one, notice that there is no timer in this game which means take your time in this room, and two, do not be overzealous about hitting the Boss as much as you please. Just use Grant, and go by the corner of a box. When the Boss comes near and turns around, punch him in the behind and retreat around the boxes. Keep doing it until he finally dies. It's slow yeah, but it works easy and prevents needless loss of hit points.
Level 5: In my opinion, this level is the hardest of all levels of the game. I honestly thought that I would never beat this one, but I actually did by one and only one way: drawing a map. Yep...you need to draw a map and detail everything that you see on the way to the bottom: edges, skiers, snowmobilers, bombs, crevices, tree stumps, bridges, arrows...EVERYTHING. Then, draw a long arrow as your intended path of movement (and also whether you need to push A or B button and if you need to fast-forward) as where you plan on going and then stick to the plan by heart. I recommend that you pause the game as you move a bit further and then looking at the map to anticipate what's next and then keeping in mind of what to do. If I never did this, I don't think beating level 5 would ever happen. One recommendation from me is by the time you reach the 4th tree stump before the first bridge is to make a very HARD left before jumping off the ledge.
Level 6: This level isn't too bad at all. You can make strategic shortcuts in this one too. Most of this level is fairly straightforward except for several parts. About the room where you will encounter 21 flamethrowers as the screen forces you up, I recommend Grant first to punch everybody out as much as you can, and when he is low in health, switch over to Nick and use his boomerang. Remember, do not hit anybody straight on but rather diagonally. After a while, you may will start feeling overwhelmed by the flamethrowers, so I recommend staying on the far right side and keep using Nick's disguise (just run up on the top right corner and stay there) to finally reach the door. The room where the floor starts to lose tiles from right to left, I recommend visiting the room on the bottom where you see the orange door (each time after a cycle; that's two times total after you have shut off the gas fumes in each time, the second cycle doesn't make the gas fumes automatically off; this room will be your best friend due to 2 MED Kits and 2 Briefcases ). After the second cycle and entering through the room where you have one-shot the Boss, there is a room of falling tiles just like as the final part of level 3. Before entering this room, put Nick's disguise on and take out the three enemies. Then, switch to Max for his bomb on the guy who rams towards to you. I recommend going to the bottom right corner to make things easier and try for the 2nd time around if you don't get all of them. Finally, you will reach the final Boss which is just a computer, and you play a game of Madelinette. I recommend you to copy the patterns (there are 4 of them) and denote the movements from the walkthrough/speedrun videos, and you can refer to them as you are playing for an easy win and a crappy ending. All in all, Mission: Impossible is a very well-made, intelligent, and challenging game, and I really enjoyed it. Beat it without a genie, and you are a true gamer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game that i am sure few people noticed., August 29, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mission Impossible (Video Game)
Aside this game being based on the tv show of the 1990s this turned out to be a great game.I dont really remember this series being on but that didnt stop me from getting this game,I was over a friends house seeing him play this, and i heard the music of this game, I have always have been a game music fanatic and i suppose the music made me want to get it,i didnt think of the challege till i brought it and started playing it and it was a challege indeed.
If i am right this game came out as the NES was dying away for the new SNES but i didnt get a SNES till 1993 so still had my NES faithfully,I remember i spent nights on the third level boss trying to beat him the one boss with the breakaway floor eachtime u walked wow that was a challege!!
For those who passed up this game pick it up, yes this game had a serious challege factor but with that said and u beat this game you earned it i know i did so give it a try you will not be dissappointed.
