5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed!, March 14, 2000

This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
To be honest I've never been much of a fan of Ennio Morricone. I know he has somewhat of a cult following, but I've just never taken much of a liking to his music.

When I go to movies I always check to see who composed the score. I was dissappointed to see it was Ennio Morricone. But, I decided to give it a chance. I've never heard Morricone compose for a film like this one. I wasn't impressed with the opening music, or the underscore for the problems on the ship. However, from then on I was blown away. I like my music loud, and this definately fit the bill. It was big, majestic, and emotional. It brought out the the feelings the movie was expressing perfectly.

I ordered this cd as soon as I got out of the theater. I'm sure this one won't be out of my cd player for quite a while. I highly recommend it.

Mhalky Chris.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Frickin' Awesome!, January 29, 2001

This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
I absolutely love this soundtrack. The scene where the rescue shuttle is hit by micro-meters and everyone is trying to "work the problem" is amazing with the score (a very memorable repetive organ). This is because it adds a classic sci-fi mood to the scene which I found unique and original, compared to modern-day scores for science fiction films. The best part is at the end where they meet the martian and they figure out what happened to Mars. When that flute (or whatever the wooded instrument was) makes a sharp break in the score and over-powers everything else, I almost cry because of the emotion that that particular piece brings to the score and film. There is a lot of passion and emotion is this score that is subtle versus the more popular themed scores that grab you right away. Although I like these types of scores, I found the Mission To Mars score to be dramatic, sorrowful and enthusiastic (simultaneously), and heart-driven. This style is very unique compared to Ennio Morricone's older spagetti western/gangster-film scores. He has a very intersting grasp on music and breaks boundries with this score. I think if you enjoyed the original style of this composer/score, you would really enjoy Vince Dicola's works.

Mission to Mars's has the kind of musical score that produces emotions of wonder. It makes for a great soundtrack and is an excellent buy. Definitely worth it if you're a fan of movie soundtracks.
