5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Impressed!
To be honest I've never been much of a fan of Ennio Morricone. I know he has somewhat of a cult following, but I've just never taken much of a liking to his music.

When I go to movies I always check to see who composed the score. I was dissappointed to see it was Ennio Morricone. But, I decided to give it a chance. I've never heard Morricone compose for a film...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected
the micrometeorites scene track and the Resupply Module scene track were pretty good, but I got pretty bored with the rest of it quite quickly. Compare this to, for example, the soundtrack CD to Star Trek the Best of Both Worlds, the latter had a lot more meat to it, and I ended up listening to that one much more. All in all, I probably would not recommend the Mission...

I've never heard Morricone compose for a film like this one. I wasn't impressed with the opening music, or the underscore for the problems on the ship. However, from then on I was blown away. I like my music loud, and this definately fit the bill. It was big, majestic, and emotional. It brought out the the feelings the movie was expressing perfectly.

I ordered this cd as soon as I got out of the theater. I'm sure this one won't be out of my cd player for quite a while. I highly recommend it.

Mhalky Chris.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Frickin' Awesome!, January 29, 2001

I absolutely love this soundtrack. The scene where the rescue shuttle is hit by micro-meters and everyone is trying to "work the problem" is amazing with the score (a very memorable repetive organ). This is because it adds a classic sci-fi mood to the scene which I found unique and original, compared to modern-day scores for science fiction films. The best part is at the end where they meet the martian and they figure out what happened to Mars. When that flute (or whatever the wooded instrument was) makes a sharp break in the score and over-powers everything else, I almost cry because of the emotion that that particular piece brings to the score and film. There is a lot of passion and emotion is this score that is subtle versus the more popular themed scores that grab you right away. Although I like these types of scores, I found the Mission To Mars score to be dramatic, sorrowful and enthusiastic (simultaneously), and heart-driven. This style is very unique compared to Ennio Morricone's older spagetti western/gangster-film scores. He has a very intersting grasp on music and breaks boundries with this score. I think if you enjoyed the original style of this composer/score, you would really enjoy Vince Dicola's works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ennio Morricone at his best., November 25, 2000

Mission to Mars's has the kind of musical score that produces emotions of wonder. It makes for a great soundtrack and is an excellent buy. Definitely worth it if you're a fan of movie soundtracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Music From Mars, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
I haven't given this CD 5 stars simply because Mr Morricone's standards are sky high anyway. So it won't go down as one of his best, but this score is still better than most. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes beautiful but always interesting, theres even a hint of The Thing in there. I haven't seen the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never heard of such imagination!, October 18, 2000
This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
I'm in awe of how amazingly dramatic Ennio's scores are. When I saw the movie the first time, I didn't pay much attention to the music with the exception of the scene where the tether doesn't make it to that one guy. Anyway, after watching it again, I listened to the scores carefully which caught me by surprise because of its haunting beauty. The music that plays right after the scene of the poor sap being whirled apart when they took a shot of the metal face, the music stayed in my head because it was haunting in some exotic way. Also the main theme that plays with the slow strings in the beginning accompanied by one vibraphone note to add texture was absolutely incredible. But these two scores are not on the CD which is a real bummer. Nuntheless, I still like this CD because of the loud and very, very dramatic pieces that are on it. Track 2, 8, and 11 are my favorites and the entire CD is a must-have. One of Ennio Morricone's most exotic, hands-down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last I Checked..., December 21, 2009
This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
Last I checked this is the page for the 'Mission to Mars' soundtrack...not the movie 'Mission to Mars'

Yet, most of the one star reviews are people complaining about how bad the movie is...do us a favor and delete your reviews and write your opinions of the movie ON THE MOVIE PAGE...NOT ON THE SOUNDTRACK PAGE.

That being said:

The soundtrack to 'Mission to Mars' is spectacular. I am not too familiar with Morricone's work (I have probably heard a lot of music by him, but I have never been blown away by it). I have yet to buy the soundtrack (due to the brilliant record company that decided to discontinue the CD) but I have heard plenty of the album from the movie and the two songs posted on youtube.

It is not like a James Horner or Hans Zimmer score where the same elements are used over and over again: There are drastically different elements scattered throughout the score...from strings to organ to piano.

The song called 'Where' is probably the best song from a soundtrack I have ever heard.

Ennio Morricone has created a phenomenal work of art...and I hope the record company will at least put the album up in digital form for people to download.

5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Some people simply do not have any musicality in them!, March 18, 2008

This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
This is a great soundtrack! Unfortunately some people, such as reviewer "davidsinden" have no real appreciation for music. The fact that "davidsinden" derides Morricone's compositional ability reveals how ignorant and uneduacted some people are. Morricone has composed dozens and dozens of movie soundtracks that cover an extremely wide range of musical styles, unlike most of the Hollywood music composers who are known for their one or two catchy jingles.

I've never heard Ennio Morricone before, but he has an amazing talant. It's an astounding movie and no one else could have been a better choice to compose the music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Film Score on CD, March 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
The Soundtrack is good, almost great, almost. It's missing the best of the score, the main theme. Sure, it's got the finale and even the opening in their, but not the main theme, which is what I was most looking forward to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm, March 21, 2000
This review is from: Mission To Mars: Original Score (Audio CD)
I believe this is a section for reviews of CDs. Many times scores work differently on the album and away from the film. Roger, do you HAVE the Mission to Mars album?

It's an excellent score, I believe. It has everything a Morricone fan could want- the moving themes, the brilliant orchestrations, those trademark weeping strings, and a fascinating finale. Ennio Morricone fans will just eat it up. While it has been said that the score was too obnoxious and overbearing for the film, it makes for an excellent album.
