waiting for a reprint,
This review is from: Mission (Paperback)
I read Mission for the first time some 16 years ago, quite soon after it was first published. Mission had me hooked up, right from the start. What would you do if he (aka He) dropped by, fueling your doubts in the old story, providing you with a new one?. Or if you were a docter in intensive care, when a patient is brought in with these remarkable, even typical, wounds? There is a sense of wonder in this book, that's firmly based in our ancient Lore and recent archeology. I'm sceptic at best when it comes to religion, but a very interested sceptic. This book set my thoughts in motion and shifted my views. Somewhat. Besides from all that, it's a very well written book, with well filled out characters, a good plotline, attention to details, tension and thought intermingled handsomely, and oh, such a nice sting in the tail. It's too bad that there are so little people who have read the book, and that there are so few new copies available to give away to my friends. Please reprint this book! It's timeless.

A truly imaginative, thought provoking, excellent read,

I have now read this book 4 times and I always find something new, something I didn't get before each time I read it. The story is truly thought provoking and Patrick Tilley has done a wonderful job of research on the bible and associated stories to attain such a detailed understanding of the life and times of Jesus and his followers. The story is full of wry humour and is written in an easy style. The situations the star of the book, Leo, finds himself in are mind-boggling at times, you find yourself thinking "now what if that were me?" all to often! The ending is superb as is the entire book. Make every effort to lay your hands on a copy of this book, it is one of the best I have ever read.
And just a quick note to the author, Patrick Tilley......if you are out there somewhere, please write some more, you are a great writer (I have read all of your books, Fadeout, Mission, The Amtrak wars etc.). I need more....

A friend told me about this book and I purchased it the next day. The bookstore only had one copy left so it was definitely meant for me. What an eye opener! I bought the book in 1984, and I still have my original copy which is marked up and dog-eared throughout. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down. I found copies in the UK for my friends who fell in love with it (the U.S. copy is bigger than the UK book and has large text). I refer to the Mission often. Was it fact or fiction? You decide. Who cares.

Every time I hunt down this book to buy it, as soon as the place calls me to discuss a price for it, suddenly it disappears again....Ah, elusive Tilley. I read this book in the seventh grade, and was flabbergasted then.... I wish I could find it... What happens when the son of G(g)od, who is very much a man, falls to earth in the company of a Jewish lawyer in New York City? Dark forces, and a varied host of strange characters (sounds like typical New York) descend upon the city, and mass pandemonium (as well as the requisite theological debate) ensue.

A tour-de-force of imagination and story-telling.,

Jesus Christ as a character/protagonist in a novel??? Not every author would attempt such an audacious feat! If botched, the result is messy and embarrassing, yet Patrick Tilley carries this off with the brilliance and panache we have come to expect of this story-tell'in Grand Maestro. This is one tale which deals with a truly cosmic contest of good and evil, and how a jewish New York lawyer is caught right in the middle. A gripping tale of adventures across vast, eldritch spans of time and space, delivered with a peerless management of dramatic tension and the masterful grasp of DETAILS Patrick has come to be famous for. Will drive you to re-read the Bible!!

We've all read about how difficult it is to find this book. I spent 7 years, off & on trying to track down a copy... The book is only out of print in the US !!! It is available in the UK, in paperback, for a great price... I bought my own copy, much dog-eared in the past 2 years, from www.amazon.co.uk I checked today (March 28,2002), and there are copies available. Just thought all my fellow Ain-Folk should have a chance to own a new copy.. No changes in the book for the UK version, other than the obvious spelling differences.. (neighbourhood, etc..)

I read this book 8 years ago and have been looking for a copy of my own ever since. A friend found a copy and I reread the book and loved it as much the second time as the first. The author really has a command of the Bible, as well as many religion's sacred books. He weaves a fabric of marvelous texture that grips and provokes much thought. This is not a book on religion, and although it is fiction, Tilley's ingenious explanation of biblical events leaves one wondering......

Maybe the best twist-in-the-tail story I've seen!,

I've been reading and rereading this book for well over 10 years. What an imagination the author has... The story treads a sure and nimble path through the edges of Christianity, mysticism, numerology, philosophy, science fiction and wry humour; there's not much in the way of established religious thought that isn't provided with a compelling alternative explanation as Leo Reznick finds his humanity refocused by The Man. Certainly my favourite book - now I know it's out of print there's no way I'm lending it out again!

I can still remember the first time I read "Mission". I finished it in the early hours of the morning and stayed up the rest of the night thinking about it. While I've gone on to read everything else Patrick Tilley has written, this is the book I read over and over again. Uniquely, this is a book for anyone, whether they're religious or not.

Ok, was it true or not? This book really keeps you guessing. For those of us who may be a little gullible it could very well be actual events. I found this book at the Salvation Army for 50 cents and picked it up just to have something to pass the time. I don't think I'll be donating it back to them.
