Hope and Intelligence,

The Mission not only presents a great story, but brings hope and intelligence to a genre that can at times be overworked. The main characters find themselves in a situation that many authors have worked to death; brought along in silly improbable ways; and ended in dramatic, but nonsensical conclusions. Mr. Benton takes the same situation, a type of world's end, and makes it highly probable, very realistic, human and humane. Furthermore, he finishes his tale with an interesting twist that should present wonder and hope to us all.

Having been a fan of the PA genre since I read "Z is for Zachariah" at the age or 7 or 8, I am pleased to read a recent novel that is well-done. The Mission is a thoughtful book, with an original take on the genre. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were some editing issues ("to" vs. "too" being most egregious), and the characters were too similar to each other. The dialogue read like it could have all been said by one character, as the survivor's unity was a bit too, well, unified. A little bit of conflict would have made a richer story. That being said, it was a great break from the usual Dystopian take on the end of the world. This story reflects on the opportunities at hand, rather than assuming the world becomes a free-for-all survival of the fittest/most insane/most bloodthirsty. Also? I WANT A NEO.
