Hope and Intelligence,
By
This review is from: The Mission (Paperback)
The Mission not only presents a great story, but brings hope and intelligence to a genre that can at times be overworked. The main characters find themselves in a situation that many authors have worked to death; brought along in silly improbable ways; and ended in dramatic, but nonsensical conclusions. Mr. Benton takes the same situation, a type of world's end, and makes it highly probable, very realistic, human and humane. Furthermore, he finishes his tale with an interesting twist that should present wonder and hope to us all.
Bravo: 5 stars.

Having been a fan of the PA genre since I read "Z is for Zachariah" at the age or 7 or 8, I am pleased to read a recent novel that is well-done. The Mission is a thoughtful book, with an original take on the genre. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there were some editing issues ("to" vs. "too" being most egregious), and the characters were too similar to each other. The dialogue read like it could have all been said by one character, as the survivor's unity was a bit too, well, unified. A little bit of conflict would have made a richer story. That being said, it was a great break from the usual Dystopian take on the end of the world. This story reflects on the opportunities at hand, rather than assuming the world becomes a free-for-all survival of the fittest/most insane/most bloodthirsty. Also? I WANT A NEO.

After reading the Mission, my mind went racing in different directions, wanting to know more about this story. Its not that the story isn't complete within itself, but rather it will leave you wanting more from this author. There are plenty of new writers out there that are creative, but few at this level that offer a different tact on what people have inside of them that is inherently good. Also, the introduction and possibilities of an entirely new species brought forth by unusual events make this an exciting story. It asks as many questions as it answers, inviting at least a sequel and possibly more. One knows, while reading this story, that the author, Richard O. Benton, must be a very creative and adventuresome soul himself. Please keep on writing so that we all may enjoy.

There's hope for us all,

This review is from: The Mission (Paperback)
An engrossing look at a post-Apocalypse world. Can we ever shed those nasty human qualities that threaten to wipe out humanity and leave the cockroaches in charge? Richard Benton gives us hope in The Mission. If you're looking for a story jammed with rock and club fights among surviving mutants, look elsewhere. This story is about rebuilding and improving this weary old world. A worthy read.

The Mission,

I must confess that I had no idea what this would be like, as this was the first book I have read by this author. Richard Benton shares much of the plot through conversation so that the characters become very likable without overshadowing the main premise. Benton conveys his social commentary and ideas for change in an expansive and non-judgemental way which requires the reader in my opinion, to notice the best of humanity's potential, which in and of itself was very uplifting.
I found myself, quite by surprise, anxious to continue reading and a bit saddened when the book ended. The storyline became so interesting that I can see (and hope for) at least one, preferably two sequels.

When I started reading The Mission I was excited to see how the plot would develop. I was surprised at each turn of the page. The author has put a lot of thought into his book and I believe he has succeeded in putting those thoughts into an interesting and insightful story.

The Mission - a must read,
By John Lach (Bloomfield, CT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mission (Paperback)
Although I have just recently become acquainted with Mr. Benton's work, I have to say that I am more impressed with every book of his that I read. I have read his previous novels, "Moonlight Man" and "I Wish I May" and although the books are of different genre's I found them both to be excellent reads.
I have just finished his latest novel "The Mission" and in my opinion it is the best of the three. The premise of the story is well explained in the description of the book so I won't go into it here. I found the book to be quite captivating and the plot was well conceived and executed, and as with his other two books there is certainly room to expand this world with additional volumes. If you like fiction / adventure novels this should be put on your reading list. |
