Book Description

Mission Under Fire is the true story of a short-term mission trip in Haiti that went terribly wrong the night 14 Americans were terrorized above a humble medical clinic in the Port-au-Prince countryside. The missionaries fought off six bandits armed with semi automatic pistols, with nothing more than knives, coke bottles, and prayer. In a miraculous fight for their lives, these brave survivors lived through hell, but have Heaven to thank for the experience.

Told by Rex Byers, one of the wounded missionaries, this story will inspire you to take stock of your life, hug your loved ones, and strengthen your faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars True story of God protecting his missionaries November 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story is intense, I cried, I panicked, I even laughed nervously occasionally. This is real and raw, there's no action hero who comes in and shoots out the bad guys in one quick move. They had nothing to fight back with except for coke bottles and Prayers, and yet somehow they all lived to tell about it. A must read. God protected them, some of them got shot, but everyone lived and he placed the right people in the right places to make sure everyone survived with a deeper understanding of God's power and mercy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there but did not do that! May 9, 2014
Format:Paperback
Having been on a mission trip to Haiti many years ago i understand the nature of a third world country. The people are often desperate due to poverty and lack of quality food and supplies, however Rex went after the disastrous earthquake. That earthquake emptied many prison cells of highly desperate and fearless criminals onto the streets. Rex and his friends had a very intense encounter at midnight with a group of those men.

You won't put it down until you have finished. Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triumph over Tragedy***** January 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story rivals the best fictional thrillers with the exception this is a true story. The background of the missionaries mission is throughly explained. I felt I knew the Haiti people as I was reading the book. During and after the attack, I counted no less than twenty miracles God performed on behalf of His people. Gods grace and mercy abundantly abound in the account of Mission Under Fire. The survivors resonate forgiveness and gratitude toward the attackers and God respectively. I appreciate the author sharing both his weaknesses and strengths reguarding his past and during this incredible ordeal. This novel is a must read!!! I could not put the book down. Thank You***

I found the story well written, including the author's own version of the time in Haiti and beyond. I believe he put a lot of time and thought in to the crafing of the events. I have recommended it to anyone who has interest in Christian mission.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dealing with what the world throws at you December 11, 2013

Great book! I had followed the story on local news. Good to get first hand account. This book illustrates doing God's work is sometimes a big challenge but His grace gets us through. Rex was brave guy. Not just in the face of attack but in sharing his life's personal struggles in print. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about going on a mission trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courage, hope, and faith November 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Disclaimer: I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story is just amazing. It's hard to read about so tragic an incident, especially when it happened to people whose only purpose for being there was to help rebuild land and lives. However, it has a wonderful message of hope, faith, and forgiveness, and I would recommend it to anyone, and certainly to those who are, or wish to become, missionaries. The men and women involved could have given up and/or lost their faith, both in God and humanity, but they didn't, and it seems they're all stronger for it. I'm very glad this book was written, and I look forward to passing it on to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mission Under Fire October 27, 2013

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book, IF you can enjoy something like that. I laughed and I cried reading the account of what happened while they were in Haiti. But knowing that my sister, Maggie Duncan, was also there, well, it broke my heart for all of them and what they had to endure. Not knowing what was happening around them, since the electricity was off and they couldn't see, was probably what saved their lives...besides God having a hand in everything knowing that they all had more things to do for His Kingdom on earth. The Haiti Team is to be blessed for their journey to Haiti and back. God Bless them ALL!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Haiti Mission September 29, 2014

A good story about the missionaries in the island of Haiti. Read of God's miraculous intervention in the lives of the missionaries and of the aftermath of the event. A good story highlighting either mission work or the hand of God

Finding God's peace and presence for sure when facing trials is the encouragement found in Rex's story. A changed life for wholehearted service is the result.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
Interesting, but left too many unanswered questions. Not only who and how it happened, but no spiritual insight into how God was glorified in this mission.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a God who protects us always!!
I liked the book's honesty and down to earth thoughts. I would recommend it to anyone who has any doubts that there is a God. He was with them all the way.

Wonderfully written. Couldn't put the book down. Makes you think about what people go through in order to spread God's word to others who don't know that Jesus is their Savior.
