Grade 1-3?In a style similar to that of her successful Fraction Action (1994) and 2 X 2 = Boo! (1996, both Holiday), Leedy guides readers through the learning-addition maze by using examples from the everyday world. Her growing complement of math titles pairs well with Stuart J. Murphy's "MathStart" series (HarperCollins). Here, in separate vignettes, Miss Prime and her class of animal students learn to add by playing detective and counting clues, taking a class survey, inventing word problems, and figuring out a lunch bill; two other situations focus on adding the profits of a yard sale and keeping score in a game. Although the breaks between the different scenes are not very well delineated, Leedy's explanations are clear and concise, and her colorful pictures feature a bevy of amusing animals. More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

I read this book to a 2nd grade class, and what a reaction! I chose this book because I thought it was creative - never before had I ever thought that literature books about mathematics would be interesting enough to use in the classroom, but my eyes have been opened.

The children were very receptive to the book right away - they liked the cover, and once inside loved the pictures. I had full class participation too, which was very surprising to me. They were answering all of the questions as a group, but managed to maintain a reasonable noise level. They stayed with it until the very end, and afterwards I asked them what they thought of the story. I was told that they liked the interactive (not their word exactly) way the story was told. They also liked the illustrations and thought that the thought bubbles were cool. Overall, I was very impressed by the performance level this book encouraged in a 2nd grade classroom, and I was inspired to read another Loreen Leedy book called, "2x2 = BOO!," to my niece who is 9 years old, and I have also published a review on that book.
