Editorial Reviews

Review

"A quite helpful contribution to the contemporary Christian conversation about the nature of Christian preaching and the church as missional. In a writing style that is engaging and compelling, Tizon clarifies what is meant by 'missional church' and brings together an impressive team of contributors to offer examples of sermons addressing multiple dimensions of the theme. The broadest accomplishment of the book may be its expression of a quite appealing Christian vision and community. Tizon, who works with Ron Sider at Palmer Seminary and Evangelicals for Social Action, inspires confidence in the long-term vitality and impact of Sider's holistic, global, and transformational type of evangelicalism. Both the book, and that movement, are worth everyone's attention. Strongly recommended." --Dr. David P. Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, Director, Center for Theology and Public Life, Mercer University

"A gem in our time, this book addresses the real issues of how the church is to relate to the world as it engages in its missional task. Deeply theological and biblical yet very accessible, the book grounds the church’s mission in her sense of being and purpose in Christ, and not merely in her doing...Each sermon in the book inspires and gives us a different vision of mission that helps expand and refresh our understandings while providing excellent models and styles of preaching for our own growth as preachers." --Elizabeth Conde-Frazier, dean of Esperanza College at Eastern University in St. David’s, Pennsylvania; author of Listen to the Children: Conversations with Immigrant Families

"If the conversation about the missional church is going move beyond the confines of the academy and into the life of local congregations, preaching will undoubtedly be one of the major conduits by which this occurs. In this volume Al Tizon provides a lively, holistic, and compelling description of missional preaching coupled with a set of illustrative sermons that admirably demonstrate the principles he articulates. It is a welcome addition to the literature on the missional church, but more than that, this is a book that can assist in bringing about the sort of transformation that the missional conversation has always envisioned." --John R. Franke, Theologian in Residence, First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, PA and General Coordinator of The Gospel and Our Culture Network

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Missional Preaching (2012) by Al Tizon June 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
In a culture and society that is shifting and changing, churches have embraced a wide variety of forms and methods to remain relevant in their communities. Some cling to traditional models that have proven successful for previous generations. Some embrace innovative or emergent forms to create space for new authenticity in dialogue and community. What does preaching look like today in a church seeking to become a community that offers the whole gospel to the whole world in both word and deed? In his book, Missional Preaching (2012), Al Tizon looks beyond the discussion of method and form and speaks to the heart of what drives the church to be a transformational entity within the world.

Tizon's work makes it clear that being missional is not an option for the identity of the church, and that biblical preaching remains one of the primary vehicles for leading congregations to this identity. Tizon devotes the first part of his work to making this compelling argument by rooting the churches identity in the revelation of missio Dei. The work provides the theological, biblical, and liturgical framework for establishing the church's missional identity.

Theologically, Tizon shows missio Dei flows from the very being of God, and thus creates the foundational argument for mission as integral to the identity of the church. Missional preaching must begin from fully embracing the mission of God. Tizon roots missio Dei in Scripture, which reveals God has sent the Spirit-empowered church to bring about the biblical Kingdom that is both now and not yet. By doing so the church is invited as a people to bring the righteousness, justice, peace, and love of God too all people. Tizon further emphasizes the importance of the liturgical embodiment of mission.

It was very helpful to grasp the concept of "missional." This book helps us to have a missional heart, cultivate it, and gives practical tips how to put it into practice. What I like the most is that Al Tizon explains principles and gives us sample preachings.

I would highly recommend this book to any pastor or church leader seeking to develop a better knowledge of God's mission and how to present it to the local church. I appreciate how Tizon presents the theology of the missional church in a way that was both approachable and insightful without being overwhelmingly academic.

While the book has preaching in the title and emphasizes methods of preaching and teaching, it would is of great value for anyone seeking a more comprehensive understanding of the missional church. I believe the goal of the Missional Preaching: engage, embrace, transform is to provide the leaders of churches with the theological and biblical rationale to see their communities as a mission field, as well as provide them the resources needed to educate and lead their faith community to actively own their part in and work on God's mission. Dr. Tizon achieves that goal clearly and concisely. Each chapter did a great job of presenting the biblical arguments. By and large the sermons were great examples of preaching the very thing that the chapter presented, but I must admit that I didn't really appreciate the final sermon by Tony Richie. While his exegesis and theology were good, it bored me. Compared to the simple elegance of the preceding sermons, this one's elaborate language and slow movement failed to engage me. Other than this example, I thought the rest of the sermons were great and wonderfully illustrated the principles of that chapter.

There were over thirty different passages in the book that I specifically highlighted and commented on, and I rarely do that!
