Editorial Reviews

Library Journal, September 1, 1999

Written and Narrated by R.J. Adams, this special travelog brings viewers on a comprehensive tour of the beauty and history of the elaborate chain of all 21 Missions from the inside out. Through rare photographs, some dating back to the early 1800's, the program not only traces the unique history of the missions, but the state as well. Highly recommended for general audiences.

Product Description

As the only video that takes viewers inside all 21 missions, this film is truly a fascinating journey through California history beginning in San Diego and ending 21 missions later in the romantic wine country Napa-Sonoma with Mission San Francisco Solano. The program also features some of California's legendary personalities as well as major events through the use of rare photographs and rare archival film. Endorsed by both the California and San Diego Historical Societies The Missions of California documentary is used by hundreds of schools throughout the state as a fourth grade video study guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
My wife and I enjoyed this look at the Missions very much. We had our first daughter baptised in San Diego and thought the Mission was beautiful. We are now planning future trips to see the other Missions featured in the video. R. J. Adams offers a fine presentation of all the Missions and it is definately worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Video Worth Watching, February 16, 2009

This review is from: The Missions of California (DVD)
"The Missions of California" is an outstanding documentary. My fourth grade class really enjoyed watching this video. For the first time, while teaching about the missions, I used a film. I've always felt that the videos my school had available were outdated and boring. So, if I found them boring how could I expect the children in my class to like them and more importantly learn from watching them? The answer is I couldn't. However, over the holidays I had gotten into a discussion about teaching the Missions and that the school didn't have any useful materials. So my aunt, who lives in San Juan Capistrano, recommended "The Missions of California" to me and suggested I watch it. And I'm glad I did. I used it this year and received a positive response from the kids in my class. The DVD moved quickly through the timeline of all 21 missions, mapping out the location of each one. This was definitely helpful for some of the kids, allowing them to picture how far the Padres traveled, since a handful of them haven't had a chance to travel to Northern California themselves. The accuracy of the facts also stood out to me in this video. While the footage taken of each mission gave an inside look of how the missions are being used today. With a running time of just under an hour, I conveniently played the entire video during Friday's class. I had no problem purchasing his video myself as a matter a fact looking back on the results I was happy too. I loved it.
