During Reconstruction, white plantation owners imported Chinese sharecroppers in the hope of replacing their black laborers. In the beginning they were classed with blacks. But the Chinese soon moved into the towns and became, almost without exception, owners of small groceries. Loewen details their astounding transition from "black" to essentially white status with an insight seldom found in studies of race relationships in the Deep South.

James W. Loewen is the bestselling author of Lies My Teacher Told Me and Lies Across America. He is a regular contributor to the History Channel's History magazine and is a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Vermont. He resides in Washington, D.C.

Loewen describes how the Chinese in Mississippi moved from "colored" to "white" by agreeing to the demands of the white elite that they cut all ties with part-black Chinese and those married to "colored" wives. This is a fascinating study of the porous racial caste boundaries (even if the "Deep South")that often characterize American "race relations" but are rarely discussed in the mainstream media.
