5.0 out of 5 stars R.L. is the Blues, May 16, 2001
By
ED CALLAN (Ridgewood, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mississippi Hill Country Blues (Audio CD)
This is the album I've been waiting for. I'm enjoy R.L.'s most recent albums but they only skim the surface of what lies behind that voice. For me, It's R.L. and an acoustic guitar. Listen to him on "Crying won't make me stay" or "Miss Maybelle"; no drum machines, no progaming, just that voice and those fingers on steel strings. If you like his Acoustic Stories album this is even better. This damm album makes me smile- well, well well. Rock on R.L.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Albums You've Never Heard, October 15, 2010
This review is from: Mississippi Hill Country Blues (Audio CD)
If you listen closely, you can hear the blood dripping from his callus', as he sits, on his porch as the sun goes down, tired and hot - from a day behind the tractor. Broken bottle, used junky wunk acoustic six banger, and a foot to tap with. Sweat dripping, soul ripping, this is the sound of southern Mississippi.
R.L Burnside has always been the sound of Mississippi. So it's no surprise that his 1984 classic LP, Mississippi Hill Country Blues.would eventually make my list of "Greatest Albums You've Never Heard."
More than likely, if you're reading this, you've never heard this album. It doesn't matter if you're NOT a blues fan. Casual listeners sadly, associate the blues with Stevie Ray Vaughn, or BB King, and that's a travesty. You don't have to be a die-hard to love this album. It's a personal record, a man telling his life story. Real blues - come from Mississippi.
Mississippi Hill Country Blues is a startling document. Profound, soulful, a epic story. Did you know RL Burnside killed a man, just to watch him die? In 1960, he was convicted of murder, but only spent 6 months in prison, on account his boss, needed him for his tractor driving skills. Years later, Burnside would be qouted in regards to his prison time: "I didn't mean to kill nobody ... I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head. Him dying was between him and the Lord."
Mississippi Hill Country Blues sounds like a confession. One man telling his life story through a worn and beat down guitar. It's one man playing one man's story. The album is a acoustic houserocker, promising to deliver the holy spirit in you, where you'll have no choice but to get up, run into the kitchen, drink six shots of whiskey, and then grab your girl and dance your ass off, until you can't stand anymore.
Every track is essential here. R.L covers everything here from killing a man, working in the fields, partying at the juke, losing trust, even falling in love, refusing a "skinny women". This recording should be in a museum. Toe tapping and knee slapping, head out on your porch with this blastin' from a country boombox. Pretend you're in southern Mississippi for a night. Go buy this record right away..
