Editorial Reviews

Hall & Oates fans trace their sound back to the golden age of Philly soul. But John treks down to the Delta for this new album, bringing a raw, rootsy sound to everything from old standards to Hall & Oates' You Make My Dreams Come True (blues version)! That joins Deep River; It's All Right; All Shook Up; Searchin'; Let It Rock; Pallet , and more.

Customer Reviews

This is the third solo album from a exceptional artist.

I quite like this album, it's a good mixture of covers & originals done in a southern, bluesy style with some rock & country thrown in.
S. Lennox
I highly recommend this album if you like bluegrass...the blues or just GREAT music that feels like you are sitting in on the session!

7 out of 10. A collection of raw cover songs that John felt encompassed his career. The songs were recorded in 1 or 2 takes with little or not overdubs to intentionally achieve a live sound that is reminiscent of old blues & folk artist recordings. There are 2 originals the Title Track and Deep River both of which I think are among the albums best. A hint of an old Hall & Oates demo song cold "Deep River Blues" can be heard in the new song "Deep River" which I think is more than appropriate since John was truly going back to his roots. I swear I could hear an "Audible Smile" as John sang Curtis Mayfield's song "It's All Right" - yes it is alright.

I quite like this album, it's a good mixture of covers & originals done in a southern, bluesy style with some rock & country thrown in. Mississippi Mile and It's Alright are my personal favorites so far; You Make My Dreams probably won't make anyone forget the original but it is a fun lightweight tune. Overall I don't think you can really compare this to anything Hall & Oates have recorded but it was probably intended that way; start to finish it's an enjoyable album. Incidentally I ended up downloading this from the pledgemusic website as it had an extra song and some neat bonuses from Oates himself.

"This album is about honoring the tradition of the song itself," Oates explains. "I wanted to go back to the songs that really shaped me when I was growing up. I wouldn't be the musician that I am today without these songs. It's a stripped-down effort to showcase what the song was before it ever made it on the record and became a hit. The music you hear on Mississippi Mile is as close to a live album as it gets." - John Oates

This record does have kinda a live album feel. I think I heard most tracks are first takes also. John covers a few songs here: Curtis Mayfield's "It's Allright" and Allen Fraser's "Dance Hall Girls". He even does his own "You Make My Dreams Come True". Great version, just not anything like you know it. "Deep River" he wrote about the recent Nashville flooding.

As half of one of the most popular music duo's in history, it's hard to not think of "Private Eyes" and "Out Of Touch" when hearing John's name. This album was a pleasant change. Not pop, just good music. He's touring this Spring, sans the mustache.

Well, John Oates is really on the right track. I saw him in Brooklyn doing a live set, preceded by Mutlu, and he was on fire. Everyone loved the 'bluegrass' stuff and I hope John continues along this vein. It is obvious it is the most natural and heartfelt effort he has made. Phunk Shui and 1000 Miles of Life were decent, good, but they had a bit of a forced feel, certainly Phunk Shui was a pastiche of old and new songs. Mississippi Mile is one piece of work, solid and thematic. My one disappointment with it is not musical. This album deserved an artful, classy CD cover and this brown, plain cover is the WORST of the 3 albums. Come on John, you cant put a Rembrandt in a wood crate frame!

Just loved that John Oates showed a different side to his voice. I love Hall & Oates but I found this to be a nice departure. While his voice almost borders on too raspy in a place or two it works well with the song choices.

John Oates' other musical side ... most people know him as part of Hall & Oates, but he's an outstanding solo artist as well.

This is different than Hall & Oates. It is a roots cd. Little blues, little folk, & a touch of country. Good music from the heart of John Oates.
