Product Description

Missouri was the 24th state admitted to the union on 8/10/1821. This flag includes 2 brass grommets on the left edge for hanging. For outdoor use, we recommend these nylon flags.

5.0 out of 5 stars The state flag of Missouri, the Show Me State, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Missouri State Flag Nylon 3 ft. x 5 ft. (Kitchen)
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 paved the way for Missouri to become a slave state and for Maine to enter the Union as a free state. But although Missouri was admitted to the Union as the 24th state in 1821, it did not adopt an official state flag until 1913. The design was by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver, a resident of Cape Girardeau, and you will be hard pressed to find a flag that puts as much meaning and symbolism into its design as this one. We begin with three horizontal stripes: the top red stripe represented purity, the central white strip symbolized purity and vigilance, and the bottom blue stripe was for justice. In the center of the flag is the Missouri coat of arms circled by a blue band displaying 24 white five-pointed starts signifying Missouri as the 24th state.

The shield of the Missouri coat of arms has a bald eagle grasping the olive branches of peace in one talon and the arrows of war in the other, which represents the strength and power of the Federal government. Then there are a pair of grizzly bears standing up and holding a circlet that reads "United we stand, divided we fall." The left side of the circlet represents the state and has a crescent moon and another grizzly bear. The bear represents the strength and bravery of the state's citizens while the crescent moon symbolizes that when Missouri became a state it was small in population but had great potential. The crescent moon is also seen as meaning the "second son," which speaks to Missouri being the second state created from the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. The right side represents the Federal government,

The bears stand upon a scroll inscribed with the state motto, "Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto" ("Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law"). Below the scroll are the Roman numerals for 1820, MDCCCXX, the year that Missouri became a state. Above the shield a helmet represents Missouri as a sovereign state. Then there is a large star surrounded by 23 smaller stars, which again represents Missouri as the 24th state. But you will notice that there is also a cloud around that large star, which represents the troubled history that Missouri had in becoming a state.

This 3 foot by 5 foot single reverse flag is made of 100% heavyweight nylon fabric, which makes it extremely durable. It is also specially treated to minimize deterioration because of the sun or chemicals and features brilliant, fast colors, a strong canvas heading, and large grommets if citizens of the Show Me State want to display their state flag by running it up a flagpole. Hopefully after reading the above they will be able to astound their family and friends by being able to describe exactly what everything on the Missouri State flag represents, because it is an impressive amount of symbolism.
