Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I'm the author, and I'm very proud of this book. It was a difficult child, but I managed to corral all the wayward characters and steer them successfully to publication. If you read this book and enjoy it, please say a few kind words about it. If you don't enjoy it, just remember what your Mother told you: "If you can't say something nice, say something snarky." Or was that just MY mom?

From the Back Cover

COINCIDENCES HAPPEN...
Housecleaner-turned-private investigator Peri Minneopa takes a routine case: a rich husband suspects his wife of infidelity. Coincidentally, bad things start happening to her.
Peri's boyfriend, Detective Skip Carlton, investigates the death of Peri's elderly neighbor. It looks like a heart attack. Coincidentally, her husband died of a heart attack two weeks ago.
The elderly couple left legal papers on the table, involving a year-old real estate purchase. Coincidentally, there is a note attached from Peri's client, a real estate developer.
Except, Peri and Skip don't believe in coincidences. When their cases collide, she begins poking her nose into police business, butting heads with her boyfriend.
Stonewalled by Skip and the police, Peri turns to an unlikely partner for help, an annoying little man who is obsessed with Dean Martin.
If she can keep her sanity and her life -
SHE MIGHT JUST SOLVE THIS CASE.

More About the Author

Gayle Carline is a typical Californian, meaning that she was born somewhere else. She moved to Orange County from Illinois in 1978, and landed in Placentia a few years later.

Her husband, Dale, bought her a laptop for Christmas in 1999 because she wanted to write. A year after that, he gave her horseback riding lessons. When she bought her first horse, she finally started writing.

Gayle began writing journalistic pieces for California Riding Magazine, then quickly added "humor columnist" to her resume with a weekly column in her local newspaper, the Placentia News-Times. What she really wanted to do was write mysteries, however, so in 2009 she crossed that off her list with the first of her Peri Minneopa mysteries.

Never at a loss for words or stories, she will continue to write as long as the ideas keep popping into her head. In her spare time, Gayle likes to sit down with friends and laugh over a glass of wine. And maybe plan a little murder and mayhem for the next novel.

Product description: Private Investigator Peri Minneopa is hired to investigate a wealthy, possibly cheating wife, but the wife's girlfriends have other ideas. After all, a friend will help you move - a good friend will help you move a body.

This is the second book in the Peri Minneopa mystery series and the first one I've read. I loved it. Peri is not your typical wise-cracking PI, which adds a refreshing touch to the story. I enjoyed all the characters, especially Dino fan, Benny. The author brings them to life and creates wonderful relationships between them all. Her villains mingle dangerously close to her protag to where you experience the tension first hand. Clever plot and subplots. I'm off to check out Freezer Burn, the first in the Peri series. Excellent job, Gayle.

My wife (DeAnna Cameron) finished this book first but was thoughtful enough not to tell me anything about the story.... and what a story it was. A casual investigation of a suspected adultress turns into an well crafted story of friendship, deceipt, and murder. Peri is in over her head again and depends on her friends and her wits to find her way clear of some very unsavory characters.

BTW: thank you Gale for an encore appearence of Benny...he is simply my favorite excentric character and just a gem in this story from the tip of his Deno shoes to his perfectly maintained Cadillac.

Here's hoping you're working on your next book, I can't wait to get a copy!

I loved this book as much as I did the first one Freezer Burn. This is the 2nd book in the Peri Minneopa Mysteries. Peri has her work cut our for her in this book. She takes a case for a highly rich developer who wants to know if his wife is cheating. Our of now where things start to slowly happen to Peri. At first, she thinks it is a fluke she got metal in her tires, but when things start to heat up she thinks other wis

Peri Minneopa, whose name gets a lot of mileage in the story (Miss Menopause, "the peri-site," etc.), has left behind the housecleaning biz and remade herself as a private investigator--a caseload that mostly involves cheating spouses. When a wealthy developer hires her to follow his wife, Peri discovers more than she bargained for, starting with the unexpected deaths of her neighbors, first an elderly man and then, a few weeks later, his widow.

This is an odd whodunit: we kind of know Who from early in the book, but not Why, and one final twist caught me by surprise.

This book is a smooth read, varying from gently sarcastic humor to edge-of-the-seat suspense. The descriptions are realistic and compelling. Best of all, the author's voice seldom gets in the way of the reading experience. Most appealing is the relationship between Peri and her boyfriend, Skip, a police detective.

I really wanted to like Peri, who struck me at the beginning as a sensible heroine, with some age and experience to her. Unfortunately, about two-thirds of the way through the book I decided she and I would never be best friends. Granted, she's much easier to take than the "mean girls" who target her, but too many of the women in this book evidently never made it past the high school level of relationships.

As the book wore on, though, I had less and less ability to empathize with Peri, primarily because she does something she knows is wrong ... and she won't apologize, because she is so convinced she's right. Her inexperienced bravado and lack of common sense would get her (or somebody else) killed if this were reality. I prefer for professional women to act like professionals, especially when they are in a field dominated by men.

Peri is a private eye just trying to do her job. So why is someone trying to scare her? Not even her detective boyfriend has that one figured out. Throw in a best friend, unwanted cat and a con on parole and there's lots of fun. Good read just not my most favorite. Will probably check out this author again

This is the 2nd in a set of 3 (so far) revolving around main character, P.I. Peri Minneopa, a housecleaner turned sleuth. In this installment Peri is involved in real-estate-monkey-business/murder solving, which began with an assignment to tail a suspected cheating wife. When bodies start falling, well, what's a gal to do?

I loved the 1st book, "Freezer Burn" and suggest one read that first, just for the background on the character development. Peri has a long-term romantic relationship with a detective in the Placentia Police Dept that keeps trying to keep Peri on the straight and narrow, and her nose out of police business, but she can't seem to avoid it.

Although I found the read enjoyable, I felt the relationship between the uppity women of the country club, a bit of a stretch, in what they would do for one another, even if they were loyal BFF's/childhood friends.

I liked Book 1 and Book 3 better than this one, but this was still good, I enjoyed it. I recommend the series to anyone liking light mysteries with a bit of humor. Also, this is a clean series, no foul profanity or graphic sex.
