Follow-up CD As Good As The First!,
By Sens Fan in Ohio (Whitehouse, Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistaken Identity (Audio CD)
Having confirmed her place in history as one Australia's most successful and popular singer/songwriters, Delta Goodrem returns with her second studio album 'Mistaken Identity' - the highly-anticipated follow-up to her 14 x Platinum 2003 debut 'Innocent Eyes'. This is a must-have CD for anyone that appreciates true talent, great singing, incredible writing talent and music that stirs your soul.Delta's first CD was nothing short of incredible. And her follow-up, "Mistaken Identity" is every bit the equal to her freshman entry into the music world. Her writing, as her music stylings, have grown with the two years since her first release and yet she still remains very true to what brought her to the dance, or the piano in this case. The first single, "Out Of The Blue" is a hauntingly soulful melody that you can't get out of your mind and is just another one of the long string of hits this Aussie beauty is bound to turn out from this sophomore CD. The rest of the tracks are equally up to the task, especially the title track, "Mistaken Identity," "Electric Storm," and "The Analyst" just to name a few. This is a MUST HAVE piece of music. Anyone that does not have Delta Goodrem in their music collection is seriously lacking in taste!

Better than her last!,
By Felt Mountain "BTGKPDAM" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistaken Identity (Audio CD)
Delta's debut sold more than 1 000 000 copies in Australia alone - I personally think it was rather average - I gave it a low 4 stars on my previous review. It's lyrics were sometimes rather childish and immature, and commonly corny.
Contrarily, on her follow-up, her lyrics are rather poetic, and actually are about something, hence the lyrics: "I know July the 8th [the day she was diagnosed with cancer] will be never the same" -- Extraordinary Day, and "Out of the blue, there I met you [Mark P]), and other lines, including a lot of metaphors, and 3rd person talking (hense: "Loves an electric storm", and "She's [I'm] always the analyst!" It has so-far sold 350 000 copies and Australia and 100 000 in the UK (note: Innocent Eyes sold 600 000 copies in the UK; 2.3 million copies worldwide). I strongly recommend this CD for everyone. I, personally think the lead single 'Out of The Blue', is the worst song on this album, it is far simplistic, and is no progress from her previous work, and 'Almost Here' is just a simple pop-ballad that Delta didn't even write. The standouts are the second (third in the UK) single 'Mistaken Identity', which is poetic, and original -- it sounds Tori Amos influenced, 'THE ANALYST' is another of my two favourites. The background vocalists are outstanding, and even though at the intro it starts of a bit slow, it turns out outstanding. Another standout is 'ELECTRIC STORM' it is very smooth and fast-paced, and would do a platinum single! Miscommunication and Fragile are also very good. The only dull tracks are the first, last and 'Be Strong' -- which all are far too simplistic and acoustic. To conclude, this album showcases a great range of songs, from the simplistic 'Out of The Blue', to the poetic 'Mistaken Identity, and to the complex original genius (a bit of an overstatement, but anyway.....), 'ELECTRICAL STORM' I very strongly recommend that anyone should purchase this release. I even took a risk by bring disapointed by Innocent Eyes, AND the lead single for this album, and it turned out very good. As the singles sold Innocent Eyes, I feel that this is a more 'no-filler'-ish type oof album. Other Chart:: Out of The Blue: Platinum, #1, Austraia Mistaken Identity: Gold, #7, Australia Almost Here: Platinum, #1, Australia Archive:: Born To Try: 3x Platinum, #1, Australia Lost Without You: 2x Platinum, #1, Australia Innocent Eyes: Platinum,#1, Australia Not Me Not I: Platinum, #1, Australlia Predictable: 2x Platinum, #1, Australia -----ALBUMS----- Innocent Eyes: 14x Platinum, #1, Australia Mistaken Identity: 5x Platinum, #1, Australia I recommend the deluxe (Australian) edition of this album, it includes a DVD with track-by-track commentry, and the making of the Out Of The Blue Video, and more......

Delta's finest yet by far,
By shane ferry "shane" (dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistaken Identity (Audio CD)
Mistaken Identity is an exceptional album and it feels to me that you can tell Delta has put her heart and soul into this follow up to her hugley successful debut, it pays off and the result is nothing less of a masterpeice. Although I am not a HUGE Delta fan, I have to say this album is absolutley stunning, I like the darker edge to this alubm in comparison to Innocent Eyes, which while being a good album was a little too teeny bopper for me, Mistaken Identity doesnt have that sort of feel to it, the lyrics are darker and the vocals more powerful. Most of the songs on this album are beautiful, my personal faves are ELECTRIC STORM, which in my opinion is one of Delta's best songs EVER, Sanctuary, Extraordinary Day, The Analist, Miscommunication and the amazing hidden track. All in all, if you are just getting into Delta i reccomend this album over Innocent Eyes, this is Delta's finest yet. I've gotta say Delta has come a long way since the corny Born to try, she just keeps getting better, and i hope she continues to do so.

A class of her own ...,

This album is another inspirational and emotional journey. Each track has it's own uplifting message whether it be the song about love 'Out of the Blue' or the song about courage and strength 'Be Strong', you really know her heart is in it. And it's a refreshing change from the usual manufactured pop which dribbles from the mouths of Britney and Christina.
Some of my favorite tracks are 'Mistaken Identity', 'Be Strong', 'Electrical Storm' and 'Last night on Earth'. If you loved her first album you will love this and if you need something more in your life than 'Oops I did it again' give this a listen. She's the pride of Australia because she's a down-to-earth, genuine beauty but also because she has an amazing talent. I hope you all can love her as much as we do.

A Lovely Sheila From Down Under!,
This review is from: Mistaken Identity (Audio CD)
Very nicely packaged 2 disc set with lots of photos of the lovely Aussie Delta Goodrem both on the CD case and the 16 page enclosed booklet. Booklet also contains the lyrics to all 14 tracks.
You always have to wonder about daytime television stars when they decide they're also a singer. Well, this one is. All in all an enjoyable array of safe songs that don't challenge her vocal range so it's a little difficult to tell how good she really is. I'd love to see her perform live, she's definitely very easy on the eyes!

Once in a while a classic cd will come along; one that is worthy of a place in history and in more importantly, in the place of the listeners' hearts. Mistaken Identity is one of these cds.
She has a beautiful voice, personality and has a stunning elegance and light which shines brightly whatever she does. She is one singer in which the fans can see the person within, relate to and feel comfortable with. It is clear she cares greatly for her fans and is not out just to make money alone. Powerful, angst-ridden, haunting and yet uplifting all at the same time, it is a turbulent journey, rocketing back and forth between the positivities and negativities of life. Her lyrics are deep and meaningful and just about every song could be a number one hit. Most importantly with this cd, she sings with strength and passion. It is rare to find someone who is so convincing. Need proof? Try listening to 'Nobody Listened'. This is totally different from Innocent Eyes; and if you weren't a big fan of that, don't judge too soon, you might be surprised how much her style has changed. She is an as of now undiscovered by the world diva with the voice power and control of those like Celine Dion who will become a household name just like she is in Australia, soon enough. Just wait and see. This is the darker side of Delta Goodrem. Prepared to be shocked and amazed.

Simpatiko makes a review :),

This is my first review so hey to all music lovers! I stumbled on Delta with her "Lost Without You" single. She sucked me in like quicksand, the honesty she portrays in her voice and look got my interest and it grew into a relationship between me and her beautiful music. I found out about the second album when I got back from the army (for which I volunteered a year early) browsing the net. I have the Innocent Eyes album and I wanted to get my hands on Mistaken Identity but it's not available in my country, not commercial enough :(
I downloaded the album over shareaza and it's grown on me very much, like a theme for my life experiences. Mistaken Identity review: 1. Out Of The Blue = The first single starts of like a gentle breeze and then builds up on the tempo. You feel a plunge when she says "Out of the blue", like somebody unplugged the sync, her vocals start rushing like bubbly water! She is secretive as to who the person generating energy and uncontrollable emotions is... The video is unusual though, everything sets on fire! A good song, but it's just a cherry toping the great sweet surprise that is this album! (26) 2. The Analyst = Great piano kick start draws attention! It's about analyzing, going back in time, something in the human nature that is a pattern for most people, the skeptic in us. I like the line: "Can you be sure we haven't met see the eyes they don't forget, they wander through the passage-ways that tease a restless mind". A wise in-lighting song that creates enchantment with the mystery of it, voices whispered. We can't resist putting everything in question, what is, and why is. Kind of a wake up song, she sings of her self in the third person. (44) 3. Mistaken Identity = This is about Delta not coming to peace with the changes her cancer brought. I find it appealing `cause I've had a similar experience. The part pin pointing the message is the stanza: "The sun likes to rise and the moon likes to fall And that's kind like my life Now I've played the role of the nice girl next door Who gets cut like a knife! Now I'm not looking for apology eyes, And I don't want to spend a night on a bed of beautiful lies Erase and rewind leave that sick girl behind, And fast forward, fast forward" Saying she's aware of her condition, but she won't let it define the way she carries on about herself, don't give me those looks, don't make me feel that way, that's not me, don't mistake us! This song certainly helped me coming home from the operation and facing the family more bravely! Nice one Delta! (26) 4. Sanctuary = Also cancer related, the song is about finding some stability in a world a new harsh reality made a mess of, there is someone with all the strength we need and a warm caring heart that understands and gives comfort. An ok song. (18) 5. A Little Too Late = Now this is refreshing! Sort of juvenile but the topic of such fine feelings and Deltas innocent juicy voice gives the song a premise that is adorable and incredibly true! It stands off from the other songs, its light and uplifting like it was taken from the Innocent Eyes album. I don't know if there was a video, but I found out it was a single. (42) 6. Be Strong = This starts off breezy like Out Of The Blue but goes on more interesting. It creeps into you as she starts to get more intense with the verses. It's a tribute to anyone who's had it rough, anyone who's been broken and thought of giving up. Getting up after a blow is not easy but it evokes a change in the way we see things, we get up more prepared and face difficulties with strength we renewed from the experience. Gets a strong point across. (39) 7. Last Night On Earth = Maters of the heart. The piano trade mark at the beginning, but as the song progresses Delta steers an interesting course! I see a whole movie listening to this song and it's such a great love story. Big words like: "I'm gonna love you like it's the last night on EARTH", and "Let's knock down the walls of IMMORTALITY" give this song an edge that's overstepping all worldly limitations, like time, space, and mater. Love is the prevailing power! (53) 8. Almost Here (Ft. Brian McFadden) = Delta in a duet!? Ain't that somethin'. I was intoxicated with this song by my mum. Every time the video came on, she would pump up the volume, how could I miss it? I feel tingles when Deltas vocals come in, it's the high point of the song, she comes in like an angel and saves this song. They make a good couple and I guess they were just that. The song leaves a great memory to look back on a relationship. (31) 9. Miscommunication = Ouuuhh... What a great vibe!! I like to think this song is part two for the one before, explaining the cause to the end of a love affair. It's definitely about a relationship going sour. Everybody can relate to this song, miscommunication is a bump you eventually hit on the road. Her ouuhhing at the end of the song gives me goose-pumps. It's cool! (47) 10. Electric Storm = This comes as an explosion! I mean WOW! What a knocker this track turned out to be! Such power in her voice! The Electric Storm is a turbulent relationship. Fantastic lyrics and the way Delta delivers her vocals over a great piano layer strike like lightening! The song carries a strong meaningful message of heartache. Everything in this song fits and makes sense, its perfect! (56) 11. Extraordinary Day = This song is so amazing! I fear that putting it into words will take away the beauty of it! It takes over me with a haunting feeling of regret, deep sadness and a sent of death. It's my favorite track because she's pouring out her soul, July the 8th is when Delta found out about her cancer and started facing it. I was surprised at how well she stitched her emotions into words and with how much pain this song is drenched with. I've been in a life threatening situation so I can identify... "...And I feel this isolated". The sincerity of it gets you, you can feel the emotions build up, and tears come as the song progresses... Truth is best! I will love this song forever! (66) 12. Fragile = This song is a prime example of the piano's ability to deliver the most sensitive Hyman emotion - vulnerability. The vocal is charming and loveable, it just gets you in the right place. Eyes are the doors to the soul and Delta is open doors about feeling fragile, feeling alone, feeling not that strong, feeling vulnerable. I never get tired of this song. (56) 13. Disorientated = Delta has such an irresistibly cute vocal here that it wins you over immediately! She manages to give diversity to every song, and she put a great twist on this one! It makes me get up, jump and spin around the room with arms wide open, makes me feel good about being disorientated which I am most of the time! We weren't all born with a map of what to do and be in life so it's ok to be disorientated, being young is going for us! Everything comes in its time. (48) 14. You Are My Rock = Deltas thank you song to her brother for being there in moments of weakness. The piano does justice to the song. You get the drift of what's it like to be in her shoes, and how much hawing an understanding, helpful brother means. The rock symbolizing the stability he brought. A cruel, sharp ending though: "We all need someone until we die". (23) 15. Nobody Listened = Girl's gone wild! The song is right in your face about the lows of her cancer experience! I like it when she screams! The piano gallops around her voice and the whole song gives you a hot-cold exposure! It's a sister song to "Extraordinary Day" topics wise, but it cuts both ways. You'll get the message loud and clear, and once the song is over you can breathe again. (40) I found three tracks from Delta "Lost For Words", "Never Fades Away" and "Love", which are not from the first, or the second album. There's also a live version of the song "Together We Are One" which she performed at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, she penned it with Brian McFadden and Guy Chambers. All GREAT songs! Lost For Words = Starts dreamy, the piano kicks in gently and Delta just takes it away like a musical magician. What can I say, I'm lost for words here I really like this song very much "Life is such a wonderful thing, you just never know what life can bring" as Delta says. I imagine everybody close to me being in my audience as I join Delta on the lyrics. Thankfully they are only there in my imagination, my voice is of course deeper than Deltas so... Enough said ;) (58) Never Fades Away = This girl sleeps on the piano, and when she wakes up she plays, very beautifully I might say. Arrangement of a Delta song, stereotypical piano. "Love is like a song it never fades away". She wanted to say something powerful but that just doesn't cut it for me. The song has the makings of a power ballad. Her voice goes high and low and than fades away as the song comes to an end. (32) Love = Daugh. It's about love, love for your family which is always there, while boys come and go. It's a nice song, childish, uplifting. Delta sang this at 14 so no wonder it ends with "What is love..." I think of my little sister and how much I love her, Dunja here's thinking of you ;) (35) Together We Are One (live) = Deltas come a long way! This is a powerful song! She penned some great verses here: "Find your guiding inspiration in a place where dreams are made With a lifetime's preparation, it's no time to be afraid, Put our differences behind us while we're shining like the sun, See what we've all become, together we are one". The crowd is singing with her, if only I was there to cheer for her... A standing ovation for this one Delta! (39) The numbers in brackets are winamp's count of how many times I played the song. It's within three weeks from when I downloaded the tracks. I hope I didn't over do it. It's just hard to say less when there is so much about her worth mentioning. Maybe I get her so much because I'm just a month older than her. Thanks for the time of day. Enjoy music, it makes life more beautiful!

This charming lady may be very beautiful and have a wonderful voice, but by this stage of her career she had fallen in with the odious Mr McFadden from Boyzone. Unfortunately, his influence can be seen in this somewhat disappointing follow up to Innocent Eyes. I've a good mind to deduct Miss Goodrem some stars to teach her a lesson, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Delta Goodrem is Australia's latest music sensation. Her original album "Innocent Eyes" achieved a near recordbreaking 14x planium, plus an unprecedented six consequtive #1 songs.
So when Delta, just 18 at the time, took time out to recover from cancer, Australia was eager to hear her experiences through her beautiful music in this highly anticipated album. True to her gorgeous style, "Mistaken Identity" is a near perfect album, which indeed reflects off her illness, but also love and life in general. Already, this album includes three top ten singles, two of those in fact debuting at #1 on the Australian Music Charts. On top of these successes, the album itself triple-platniumed in its first week on sale. It went on to gain two more platniums. "Mistaken Identity" is a trully stunning collection of songs. I don't think I'll review each song in great depth, simply because everyone has unique opinions and tastes. However I shall give my personal top five. They would have to be: 1) The Analyst 2) Last Night on Earth 3) Extraordinary Day 4) Out of the Blue 5) Almost Here Of course, everyone will have different "Top 5s" but statisticly, these five tend to be the favourites among fans. Just a quick note on some of the songs; "Extraordinary Day" is in fact a song about the very day Delta found about her cancer. It is a trully haunting song, and a very valid song too, as it depicts the emotions of many human-beings who may have experienced such an illness. Also, "Almost Here" is infact a duet Delta did with former Westlife member Brian McFadden. Delta and Brian were brought together as a couple because of this song. Those two "FYIs" weren't "helpful" as such, but I just thought I'd let you on in some of the messages and secrets locked away in these brilliant songs! Delta Goodrem is a breath of fresh air from these other so-called artists, possessing genuine talent. Through her uplifting melodies and metaphorical lyrics, Delta expresses a somewhat innocent outlook on life. There is no denying the immense gift of this young girl. Her songs have inspired many, and her bubbly, friendly spirit in real life really add shine to this great album. There is no mistaking the fact that Delta Goodrem is here to stay!

A must have album!,

Delta's extremely successful debut 'Innocent Eyes' was always going to be a hard act to follow. Critically acclaimed, with her album going 12 times platinum, this young songstress amazed everyone with her amazing vocal ability, fresh new sound, and very obvious talent for the piano. However, it is safe to say that with 'Mistaken Identity', Delta more than delivers. While it is hard to say whether she outdoes her original album, one thing is sure - the delta we know and love is very much still here. So, saying that, if you didnt enjoy the first album, I wouldn't reccommend this album, as stylistically it is similar. But for me, who really got a lot out of the first album, mistaken identity has everythign we loved about delta. This album is a mixture of inspirational songs and love ballads.
Now let's have a look at the album track by track; 1) Out of the Blue - although there was a bit of public debate over whether this song really matched up to her old standards, I maintain that this is a great song. Musically, it is quite unconvential for delta, but all the same, it really delivers as a truly uplifting love song. As the first single, it is a great opening to the album, which showcases her extraordinary vocal ability. 9/10 2) Analyst - On a first listen of the album, i have to say this track really stood out. With it's captivating piano melodic line at the beginning, and it's intriguing lyrics, I think this is one of the songs that will end up being released as a single. 8/10 3) Mistaken Identity - Musically, this song is very typical Delta. However, I feel that the bold statement she makes with her lyrics, which are cleverly rhymed and crafted, really lift this song. It's this raw attitude which I found refreshing after the first sugar-coated (as fantastic as it was) album. 8/10 4) Extraordinary Day - After a profound introduction, I found that that the verse fails to really lift off. The bridge and the chorus are more interesting, and while the lyrics are very emotional, and as pleasant as this song is, I am never really swept of my feet. that having been said, it is a truly delta song. 6.5/10 5) A little too late - Despite its conventional sound, I found this is a great easy listening song. It has a really light-hearted feel, which is really pushed along by the lyrics. While it isn't the most amazing of tracks, its feel good message gets you in the end. 7.5 / 10 6)Be Strong - One of the best on the album, this track really stands out, due to its deep inspirational message and simple instrumental accommpaniment, which gives delta a great chance to shine. This track is extremely uplifting, and one can see the amazing maturity in her, both muscially and vocally. 10/ 10 7)Electric Storm -slightly more unconventional, this is an interesting track, which captures you from the beginning, with the intricate piano part. Her powerful voice is displayed, and while the verse can seem a little dull, the chorus quickly picks up the pace making this song into a winner. 8/10 8) Almost here - Among the weakest on the album, this track fails to take off. It starts nicely with the male voice, but both musically and lyrically the track doesnt seem to develop or go anywhere. That having been said, i thought it was refreshihng to see her try and do a duet. However, i don't feel it was nearly as good as it could have been. 6/10 9) Miscommunication - Again, this song fails to convince me. Its lyrics are noticeably weaker from all the other tracks, and musically, it is quite bland, excepting the chorus which is alright. 6.5/10 10) Santuary - On a first listen, the unsual musical characterstics made this sound more unconventional than her other songs. Quite ordinary at the beginning, the song develops nicely, and delta's vocal talents really push this song along, making it one of the better songs on the album. 8/10 11)Last Night on Earth - the contrast used in this song makes ir stand out. With the beautiful and textured piano part at the beginning, which is later repeated, the following more passionate part of the song has a lot more meaning. Her musical craftmanship is in full view here, which really sets this track away from her other, more conventional sounding ones. 10/10 12) Fragile- listening to this track a second time, I have to say I got more out of it. The fact that, muscially, this song stays the same is a credit to Delta's fantastic vocal talent, which is left to drive the song. Her voice portrays a true sense of emotion, and you feel as if you are going on the journey with her. 8.5/10 13) Disorientated - Like 'extraordinary day', I felt this song never really took off the way it should have. While it has a fun beat and unconvential musical techniques, and delta tries somehting new by speaking in her song,it is not one of those songs you can imagine singing along to. Probably because it fails to grab you, making it hard to relate to. 6.5/10 14) You are My Rock - Stand out track. With its beautiful piano part, and simplistic melody, this song captured me from the first listen. Another reason why this song is my fave, is the way it develops so nicely - and goes from a soft ballad, to a truly powerful song. Truly inspirational. 10/10 Summary: All in all, despite its ups and (proportionally small) downs, I do feel this is a must havbe album. Even though there are some weaker tracks, I feel these are only weak by comparison. It picks up from where the last album left off, but what gives this album more depth is Delta's maturity - conveyed through her intricate composition, and meaningful lyrics. But most of all, her magical voice lifts every track to new heights. A must have! |
