(2-CD set) Over the past few years, no label has done more than Broke & Hungry Records to promote the raw, wild sounds of the Mississippi Delta. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the label is pleased to release Mistakes Were Made: Five Years of Raw Blues, Damaged Livers & Questionable Business Decisions. This two-CD label retrospective boasts more than 100 minutes of raucous down-home blues from some of today's best Mississippi bluesmen. Included among its 30 cuts are a whopping 14 unreleased recordings from such artists as Jimmy 'Duck' Holmes, Terry 'Harmonica' Bean, Pat Thomas, the Mississippi Marvel, Bill Abel and many more.

"Mistakes Were Made: Five Years of Raw Blues, Damaged Livers & Questionable Business Decisions" is not only an appropriate title (for those who know the hard work and lost dollars that go into recording/releasing such real-deal, non-pop stuff!) but also THE essential 2-CD set for those seeking to hear the state of the blues in Mississippi's surviving juke joints. There are some relatively big names on the set, but it's really the more obscure guys that make this extra special. From Odell Harris' rollicking opener (recorded at 4am after a night of chaos) to Wesley "Junebug" Jefferson's acapella field holler (reliving the days he spent working the fields on Stovall Plantation)... and beyond, this is the deepest blues destined to be played over and over in the decades to come. An instant classic. Buy it early and often. Then, come visit the Mississippi Delta for yourself and see why this music simply had to come from here. (FULL DISCLOSURE: The album's producer is a friend of mine, but believe you me, I would absolutely not put up this review if I didn't strongly believe every word of it. I'm a fan first and foremost. This is MY kind of recording. It cuts so close to the blues bone that it hurts...)

If you're tired of listening to the same old Chicago-style 12-bar blues, or if you're at the edge of despair because you think there's no more good music being made, then buy this album immediately. This is the real stuff. It's filled with raw, mostly one chord, riff-based, music played by local musicians who can't even dream of careers, but just love the music. You will not find professionalism, beautiful voices, or virtuosity represented. It's about the soul of music -- for real.

This is the real deal. Konkel has spent the past 5 years apparently making bad business decisions and (willingly?) sacrificing parts of his liver to collect the songs and stories of the authentic Mississippi Blues...and somehow he's still here. If you want to audit the real blues, this is a good place to start. And, if you haven't seen the award winning M is for Mississippi, I highly recommend that as well. Have a beer and sit down for a listen. You won't be disappointed.

If your muse is deep Mississippi Delta Blues then look no further. This is top notch, down and dirty natural blues. Artists that stand out are Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, Terry "Harmonica" Bean and the Mississippi Marvel. High grade raw blues for a reasonable price. Broke and Hungry Records has done a wonderful job of documenting an essential genre of the Blues. Lesser known artists perhaps, but outstanding music!

Great pictures and performances for that long ago era that I was curious about and never exposed to. Curiosity satisfied.
