Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In the early 1950s, Alan Young's career looked golden. TV Guide called him "the Charlie Chaplin of television." But despite winning Emmys, The Alan Young Show never caught on. Yet, shortly after its demise, Young became toast of the tube playing second fiddle to a Francis the Talking Mule knockoff, Mister Ed. Young's whole story, then, is one of those birth-of-TV-as-mass-medium testaments. His award winner ended when he demanded that CBS produce the show on film rather than live. He lost the fight, unfortunately, just as Desi Arnaz and Al Simon were devising the three-camera film technique that became the look of classic American TV sitcom. Oh, well. After briefly resuming a movie career, Young came back in Mr. Ed, one of the few syndicated shows ever picked up by a network, and the rest is TV history. Young's warm reminiscences are a charming addition to pop culture history. Mike Tribby

Alan Young, who played Wilbur in the TV series, recounts his years alongside Mister Ed with such passion and light hearted humour that this is my all-time favourite book. It's a wonderful read that brings tears to your eyes. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed this fabulous 60s TV show.

By A Customer
This review is from: Mister Ed and Me (Paperback)
I loved every minute of Mister Ed and Me. It was wonderful to learn about the people who were involved in the Mister Ed series, and Mr. Young tells his story about how he came to know Mister Ed in a very charming way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and "ED"ucational!, October 2, 2004
This review is from: Mister Ed and Me (Paperback)
I read the review by A. A. Cucolo and felt I had to write a rebuttal. I first read this book after checking it out of the library and I so enjoyed the story of Alan Young and Mister Ed that I purchased a personalized copy and later bought someone else a copy.

We both feel the book is true to the title explaining how Alan Young came to work with the horse, of course! It is a thoughtful and insightful look behind the scenes with the people who brought us such a delightful TV show.

Instead of steering you away from the book we suggest you gallop right out, buy a copy and enjoy the ride.
