Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Sister Gumbo, black women spoke honestly about black men. Now the men get their turn in Kindred and Guerin-Williams's new collection of frank comments. And frank they are: sometimes coarse (one man talks about a "trifling-ass" woman's "good pussy"), more often respectful (indeed, Ken is almost awed by one woman who "didn't fall for me like every other woman did"). The men range in age from 20s to early 40s; they are single, married, divorced; and they have a wide range of opinions and experiences. But one message that comes through clearly is that the men aren't in a hurry to fall in love and commit to a relationship, and they're turned off by a woman who asks, after one or two months of dating, where the relationship is going and whether the man loves her. A lot of these men seem to have a lot of women running after them (even Dante, who's married). But they say sex is not the most important part of a relationship, and sexual fidelity counts: one says, "If the woman is doing her best to please her man, then it's easy for him not to cheat." Black women who want to know what men will never tell them directly will learn a lot from this sometimes startlingly honest book.

I enjoyed reading this book, it gave an inside look at how men feel about ceratin life situations. I recommend this book to all women. Not necessarily to understand men, each one is different; but it gives you an interesting perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Men telling the TRUTH!, April 14, 2007

I enjoyed this book just as much as I enjoyed Sister Gumbo. It was very good idea for the sisters to get together and create a different book where they interview men on different situations..love, marriage, sex, affairs, what turns them and off. This was a good book and for once, men telling the truth!

You'll be surprised at some of the things these men have to say!

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - Sex, Lies, and Mouths Agape, August 12, 2005

Ladies, did you know some men think that if they tell us what we want to hear we will do whatever they want? Did it ever dawn on you that many times a man isn't really looking for sex? Rather, he just wants to know he can have it? These and other startling tidbits are revealed in the latest collection of interviews by Ursula Inga Kindred and Mirranda Guerin-Williams in their follow-up to Sister Gumbo. Women all over the planet will be stunned at the things revealed in this veritable handbook for getting and keeping a man.

The authors interviewed several men of different ages, different backgrounds, and different marital experiences, providing readers with a wide range of answers. Though the subjects were primarily African-American, it seemed that many of the concepts could be applied to all men, regardless of race. Topics included commitment, pet peeves, sex, fatherhood, eroticism, dating, marriage, and everything in between. The interviewees were extremely candid, as some of the things they said were a shock and awe campaign on my senses.

I must say that these ladies are a joy to read. They knew just the questions to ask and just how to ask them to provide us with the lowdown on how men really think. While the beginning introductions to the interviewees were a bit long, it was nice to have them there to refer to later in the book. I would suggest that if you get anxious, skim them in the beginning and go straight to the good part. Every woman should read this book; it will be more eye-opening than you can imagine.
