4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Haunted House Thriller, December 12, 2010
A group of people are staying in an old house. It was built prior to the Civil War, and it is a large and imposing place one a basically deserted road. While Basil Willing and his wife are heading to a vacation spot nearby for skiing, they get caught in bad weather. Mrs. Willing breaks her ankle in the snow and the two are forced to take shelter in the old house.

The occupants and the owners are both present there, as well as another elderly couple and few teenagers. There isn't much room for the Willings, except for a locked room that has been unopened for decades due to several deaths that took place there. It is decided that the room will be opened to dispel the the stories of it being haunted.

Of course, a death does take place there, and between the meddling of the teenagers and the hidden relationships between the guests, it is uncertain as to whether the mystery will be solved.

This is a fast paced, entertaining story told from several different perspectives. Anyone who loves a good haunted house story will enjoy this one. The only downfall is the ending, which comes abruptly and without enough resolution.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basil Willing + A Haunted Room = Fun Reading, October 15, 2004
By
Ron "mvg@whidbey.com" (Whidbey Island, WA United States) - See all my reviews
I "discovered" Helen McCloy by reading "Cue For Murder" (which remains my favorite of her Basil Willing stories.) This one takes place later in his career and is entertaining on its own. Only problem I had was that even I could figure out the solution well in advance (which I usually cannot accomplish no matter how many mysteries I read.) But I recommend it for lovers of "golden age" mysteries. (Especially if you can't find "Cue for Murder.")
