4.0 out of 5 stars Mistletoe and Margaritas December 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Claire Rutledge has been a widow for two years, and during that time, her friendship with her husband's best friend, Justin, has grown even stronger. Justin loved Claire even before her husband died but has always kept their relationship platonic. Claire is now in a place where she might be interested in dating, if she could ever think of anyone besides Justin.

This is a really sweet friends-to-lovers story. The spark is there between these two -- they just have the hurdle of Claire's husband's ghost to see through. Claire has made peace with her husband's death, but Justin still has issues. He feels guilty for loving Claire while she was married and still carries that with him. But a little push from friends and family, a kiss under the mistletoe and some holiday cocktails get these two to try out the romance. We also get sex in a snowplow. Merry Christmas to us.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely "second chance at love" Christmas romance... December 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
At only 28 years old, Claire Rutledge has already been a widow for two years. As Christmas approaches she finds herself contemplating the idea of a new romantic relationship, and is caught off guard by the attraction she feels for her best friend, Justin. Justin's unwavering support helped to see her through the darkest days of her grief. He's good-looking, hard working, solid, thoughtful and funny. In other words, he's perfect...except that he was her late husband's best friend.

I loved these characters. Claire was dealt a really lousy hand, losing her husband at such a young age, but she's strong and resilient and refuses to let that tragedy define the rest of her life. And Justin? Justin is perfect. Not Romance Novel perfect - he's not outrageously rich, or a former SEAL. Not a famous athlete; not so over-the-top Alpha that he leaves a trail of testosterone in his wake. No, Justin is that rare breed rarely seen in captivity...just a really great guy. Down to earth, blue collar and masculine, he has that "guy next door" sex appeal. ( Though in all honesty I've never been lucky enough to live next door to a guy like this. My neighbor looks like a cross between Jerry Garcia and David Crosby and likes to mow his lawn wearing nothing but teeny little tennis shorts and Crocs. But I digress).

This is short - novella length - but the characters are fully developed and come off as realistic. The dialog has a genuine, unscripted feel to it and I liked the way the author manages to have Claire's love for Justin never seem second best to her love for her late husband. This can be tricky to pull off, and it's done quite well here. I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend it.

Can I start by saying how much I love Shannon Stacey's writing. When I interviewed her this summer she let it slip that this story would be out around the holidays. You don't even want to see how excited I got when this collection went up on NetGalley. E.X.C.I.T.E.D. doesn't even do it justice.

Stacey didn't disappoint. Her characters, as always, were down to earth and funny. You hit this relationship not at its beginning but close to its boiling point. You're literally waiting for these characters to implode! They've spent so much time trying to resist each other because of the nature of Claire's first marriage that the tension is through the roof. Their relationship, both physical and emotional, comes together very realistically. Though this is the shortest title in the collection I never felt as though the progression of their relationship was rushed. And they were given time to deal with the emotional ramifications of their attraction. When this one ends you'll find a Happily Ever After, not just because the Author tells you there will be one...but because you can see it for yourself in the character's new-found understanding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mistletoe and Margaritas December 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this story with the collection Holiday Kisses: A Rare Gift\Mistletoe and Margaritas\It's Not Christmas Without You\This Time Next Year, a collection of 4 short romantic stories set during the most wonderful time of the year.

Finally after losing her husband two years ago, Claire Rutlege takes off the wedding band. She thinks she just might be ready to move on, but is a little freaked out when it's her best friend (and her husband's best friend) Justin McCormick who is starring in her steamy dreams. Justin has loved Claire since the moment he first saw her, but his best friend got to her first so he backed off. He can't stand the idea of betraying his best friend by loving his wife. When a combination of mistletoe and margaritas have them "moving on" both are caught in the emotional turmoil of what that would mean to their deceased husband and friend.

This story had a bit too much angst in it for my taste. There was a lot of pining on both Claire and Justin's part. I don't like pining. It rhymes with whining. I am fan of Ms. Stacey's "Kowalski Family Series of DOOM!" books (i.e.Exclusively Yours, Undeniably Yours) , but this didn't seem to have the same flair and humor. This story was well written and flowed smoothly, which is always a plus.
