Hopeless Romantic,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mistral's Daughter [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Mistrals Daughter is excellent, expecially if you are a hopeless romantic like me. Stephanie Powers is very believeable as the 18ish country girl who arrives in Paris hoping to find love and success as an artist's model. A reality check occurs when the object of her affection, Mistral, played by Stacy Keach turns out to be more interested in himself and his own pursuits as an artist, than his realtionship with "Maggie Lunel"(Powers). Broken hearted, Maggie is pursued and falls for the enigmatic wealthy American from New York played by dashing (and young)Timothy Dalton. Tragedy folows "Maggie" all of her days and the story follows three generations of Lunel women. Their romances intertwine with Mistral and his illegitimate daughter. Worth watching on the couch witha hot cup of tea and an afghan. Enjoy!

It's been over twenty years since this miniseries first aired but who can forget Stacy Keach's performance as the artist Julian Mistral or the part played by the late Lee Remick as a conniving and scheming woman who stopped at nothing to trap and keep Mistral in a lovless marriage. This epic love story spans several generations and reveals the level of despair and sheer decadance some of the characters fell into during this span and how their lives remained forever interwoven. You can almost feel Mistral's pain in his last days as it is revealed how his paintings came to reflect his anguish and guilt for having refused shelter during WWII to acquaintances of the Jewish Faith and how that refusal ultimately led to their deaths at the hands of the Nazis. With his death and through his will, he finally gets revenge for the years of dispair he endured during his loveless marriage and the tragic loss of the only woman he truly ever loved. The miniseries was filmed almost entirely in Europe and the scenery is dazzling; the acting superb. Of course the beautiful Stephanie Powers and handsome Timothy Dalton also helped beautify the scenery! This is a three to four hanky movie. Enjoy!

The story is GREAT. The STUPID thing is that at the end of each chapter they show you what is going to happen in the next chapter. If that is not bad enough. when the next chapter starts they show you what happened in the previous chapter. The total time is 400 minutes. Without all the crap it may be only ~ 200 minutes.
Be prepared to use the fast forward button a LOT.

This is a powerful miniseries that has stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately, Stacy Keach made headlines around the world because he was busted for drug possession while filming this epic. Otherwise, the cast for the most part was AWESOME. Stacy Keach and Lee Remick stand out in my mind. Admittedly, Lee Remick was my favorite. She truly captured the essence of a well-coiffed,sexually repressed rich woman who would stop at nothing to "land" the brilliant, passionate Mistral. While Stephanie Powers was great through the majority of the film, she was frankly "UNBELIEVABLE" as the "young" Maggie and her "French" accent also left much to be desired. Conversely, the strikingly handsome Timothy Dalton was charming as a married, long suffering wealthy banker who falls for Maggie. The musical score is as lush and vibrant as the subject matter. I highly recommend it. Enjoy, but keep your hankies handy. It's a real tearjerker!

When this movie originally aired, I loved it then. I watched it so much that the tape wore out. I loved the paintings that they used in this movie. The acting was supurb, the scenery great and they whole story was put together wonderfully.
You felt sorry for Mistral's real daughter, but in the end by her actions alone she got what she deserved. The movie also showed how the laws are different here in the states compared to Europe. If you haven't seen the movie, buy it because it's one worth keeping and watching over and over.

This has been a very difficult mini-series to find at the library, blockbuster or netflicks. When I finally looked at Amazon.com, there were many options from used to new. The product availability was amazing. The movie was shipped quickly.
It's been years since I've seen this movie (1984), and so much of it I didn't remember. Still a wonderful story. Well done.

I loved this movie when I saw it on TV back in the early 1980's. To have found it available to purchase was very exciting. I have never seen it again on TV, so being able to buy it for my own collection was important to me. The price was fair for this rare set and I am very happy with my purchase.

Mistral's Daughter It's been over 25 years now since I first saw "Mistral's Daughter" on video. International bestsellers were directly made into TV miniseries almost every now and then a popular trend during the '80s & '90s. Thanks to renowned bestselling authors whose talents in storytelling are quite remarkably extraordinary especially the likes of Judith Krantz, Sidney Sheldon, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Harold Robbins, Danielle Steel, Dominick Dunne, Jackie Collins et al. Anyway, the film is approximately 440m. long, but it is all very worthwhile to say the least. Among its great highlights are an excellent cast splendidly filled with equally impressive acting talents all the way, beautifully shot on location in lovely French locales and romantic vistas, superb production and costume design spanning three generations all vividly captured in rich period detail and, most of all, Vladimir Cosma's music score is hauntingly memorable and wonderful as well. Intelligent storytelling at its meticulously best is a major plus. A brilliant masterpiece in the real sense of the word.
