4.0 out of 5 stars A good yarn, but terrible presentation, February 27, 2006

This review is from: Mistress of the Dragon (Paperback)
It's a pretty good story, actually several stories in one. Going back and forth between the plots is not distracting. That would get the book 5 stars.

I leave off one star for two annoying features. The first seems to be characteristic of vanity press. While the author has no doubt used a spell checker, he has not given the book to be proofread by a native speaker of proper English. The author is consistent in mistaking heard for herd and tomb for tome. I realize that there is a vocal group of readers who claim that good English is not necessary for a good story. Sorry, but every time the rules of English are broken, the movie in my head skips. And I hate that.

The second annoying feature is the author's insistence of showing us how a character's name is pronounced the first time the name is introduced. Even for the trivial names. I found this mildly insulting. Part of the fun of reading a book with funny names is figuring out the pronounciation. Tens of thousands of SF/Fantasy books leave it up to the reader to work it out. Others choose to put in a pronounciation guide as an appendix. Just as with bad English, I found the parenthetical pronounciations jarring and unnecessary.

Aside from these "mechanical" faults, the only fault I have with the plot is the solution of how a dragon mates with a human. There is tremendous build-up in the plot, and finally 3/4 of the way though the book, we find out. I personally found the solution quite boring and mundane.

Despite its flaws, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest of the vanity press books I've read.

Thank (thangk) you (yoo) Michael (my-kul) Mennenga (men-en-gay)!

5.0 out of 5 stars An imaginative and adventurous story, January 5, 2003
This review is from: Mistress of the Dragon (Paperback)
Mistress Of The Dragon by Michael R. Mennenga is the fantastic fantasy tale of Petrill, a half human half dragon child born from the love between Tigora (a powerful and majestic dragon), and Morana, a noble-hearted woman whose love for her dragon mate provides the strength to escape her tormenting captors. With kinship to two worlds, Petrill searches for a sense of belonging - what love can come for one who is descended from scales as well as skin? Mistress Of The Dragon is recommended as an imaginative and adventurous story embracing themes of defining humanity and finding a balance in an unusual and diverse heritage.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Captivating Story, April 10, 2002

One could easily believe that Mr. Mennenga personally consorts with wizards, fairies and dragons from the believable way he describes them and tells their stories. They draw you in and make you want more. I could visualize the old Wizard Nefress and the tattered and aging Tigora who's love for Morana was so true and yet tragic. I've read this story twice and am now ready for a third time as it takes me away to visit a very wonderful place filled with fascinating creatures and characters. A must read for all fantasy fiction lovers.
