Better than the average femdom material.,

This is an erotica book, not a porn book so if you are looking for lots of measurements, non-stop sex, and vulgar words, don't buy this book. But if you like a hstorical setting, that does appear to be fairly well researched, the imagined "true story", with a femdom leaning then you might like this. I found the writing top notch and the plot well thought out -- however, only three or so months seemed to be covered in what was a three year relationship in much detail. And I want to know why all these femdom tales have sad endings, where the man returns to his world and spends the rest of his life yearning for the powerful female or she dies or she is brought around to the reality that she just needs a strong man. At least this was a romantic tale by the end and for that and the research I give it four stars.

Adventure, domination, history, and eroticism at it's finest,

What an exquisite book and a total surprise. Well, maybe I shouldn't have been totally surprised since Blue Moon seems to find books that are teetering on the edge and the reader never really knows what to expect. This book is a fictional account based on fact and history in China in the 1860's while China was in the middle of innumerable wars and conflicts for its riches and wealth. Considering that at the time the birth of a female to a chinese family was nothing to celebrate, an army of young women 'Christian' called the 'Taiping' formed to battle with both foreign mercenary armies and Chinese armies for control of the country. One of these bands of zealous agressive and fierce fighters captured a young American officer, 'Thomas Rowley' who was then given to the 19 year old 'Sweet Little Sister' as her slave. Rowley describes his ordeal and his eventual submission to the will of the little soldiers. It must be noted that the author spends more time on the adventure of the tale rather than the erotic content one may have expected from Blue Moon .. I gobbled up the book in one reading and, like all good books, felt disappointed when it was finished ....

Erotic and Much More!,
By Ernie Howell (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistress of the East (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have to say I loved this book. It is set in China in 1862 when Taiping rebels were fighting against the Manchus. An American soldier is captured by an all-female brigade of Taiping women and this leads to whipping, domination, sex, sexual tension, etc., etc. But it is presented as a true story as if a manuscript of the man himself has recently been discovered. It rings as true as non-fiction and is far more literary than the normal book from Blue Moon. The second half of the book is very moving as well. Love, sex, erotica, femdom, things Chinese, well researched, deeply moving, etc., etc. This one has it all. Don't miss it!

Wow! Whew! Beautiful Chinese women with whips, a moving love story, Chinese culture and history, plus great erotic scenes!! This is without question the best and most unusual erotic novel I have ever read. Complete with a well thought out plot. Don't miss it. This is the way erotic novels should be.

Excellent Erotic Novel,

This review is from: Mistress of the East (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
This novel is set in China in 1862 and is a fine blending of a love story with very erotic scenes. After he is captured by Chinese women warriors, the narrator (An American officer) is whipped into submission. Later, however, he falls in love with one of the young Chinese women and willingly surrenders himself to her. The book is presented as non-fiction with the author writing only the introduction and the notes. Supposedly, the manuscript of the narrator surfaced in a New York auction house recently. Whatever, I love the descriptions of China of the period, the realistic atmosphere which the author obviously researched well, and particularly the descriptions of the Chinese women warriors. The ending is quite moving, as well. It is a very unusual erotic novel which offers a lot more than the usual cliched "discipline school" type of the erotic. It also offers food for thought on the nature of female dominance and the role of love between a dominant female and a man who worships her.

Wonderful Erotica set in China,
By B. Jacqueline Gillis (Vero Beach, Florida United States) - See all my reviews

This book is a great read. Set in China in the 19th century the author really must have done his research because the characters and setting really come to life! The erotic nature of the novel is certainly there but I found the love story, especially in the second half, to be a really memorable tale. I wish all Blue Moon Books were on this level.

Captivating,

Having read and enjoyed several other of Dean Barrett's books and after reading the description on the cover I was not expecting to be so captivated with Mistress of the East. It was a new experience reading about female dominance. The author engages the reader with so much skill that one becomes frightfully involved with the book.

A Really Good Read,

I've read a lot of erotica but this is one of the best! Chinese women enslave an American adventurer. And the author makes it all seem real because of his obvious knowledge of things Chinese. Sweet Little Sister is one in a million, a character you won't soon forget. I highly recommend it.

A pleasant diversionary tale.,

An Interest-holding story with which to get through a lazy afternoon or a plane ride. Barrett does a great job of introducing and finishing the story with his pre and post notes that hint as if Rowley was a real person and theses are real memoirs. I don't rate this higher because I had trouble identifying Rowley as a character. Rowley doesn't give the impression that he's fallen "in love" with his captor (though he no doubt believes that he has), but rather he's been brainwashed by her. His actions and attitude indicate psychological injury not unlike a Patty Hearst Syndrome, and the reader ends up feeling a pathetic pity towards Rowley. Again, the best parts of the book are Barrett's own narratives, which entice you to research these Taiping warriors and learn more about this period of Chinese history. An ample escapist story to tide you over, but a far cry from 5 stars.

Very different erotic novel,
By Jeff Wilson (Manila) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistress of the East (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Extremely well researched and well written novel set in China's Ching Dynasty. It was a time of turmoil and rebellion and this novel blends in fiction with history so cleverly it is almost impossible to pull them apart. The women are sexy and the twist ending is really different and moving. I like the way the author describes Sweet Little Sister's thoughts because it reflects the way of thinking at the time and what her understanding of events would have been, however limited. A great read.
