Review

"Mistress Ginger Cooks!" is going to be on my shelf in an easy-to-reach spot. --Philadelphia Gay News

If you are interested in the vegan lifestyle, are looking for a new cookbook, or just need a new conversation piece for your kitchen, check out Mistress Ginger Cooks! --Brent Peterson, The Vital Voice

SI: Based on titles alone, my favorite recipe of yours is Pound-Me Cake, although I suspect that could go in the opposite direction if my mind was in the gutter. What's your favorite recipe title and why? --Interviewed by Ryan Ritchie, LA Weekly Blogs

We never thought it possible to use the words vegan and glamour in the same sentence, until now. --Star Tribune

This book is recommended for libraries that collect cookbooks, those interested in providing resources for specialty diets, and those that collect LGBT or drag-oriented materials. While not super heavy on the technical side of cooking or drag culture, the book is accessible, fun, and beautiful, making it a great addition to many different types of collections. --Mack Freeman, GLBT Reviews

About the Author

Mistress Ginger was born Mary Morningstar in a small Mid-Atlantic town. While the truth of Mary's youth is something of a mystery, we know that Mary assumed the stage name Mistress Ginger by 2006. She made her theatrical debut alongside Saliva Goodwife in the satirical cabaret spectacle Broadway Bound...and Gagged and starred in a string of bombastic productions with Junkyard Theater, that include The Mistress Ginger Junkyard Spectacular, Bedroom Eyes, and Geek in the Pink a retrospective featuring songs and scenes from her pink-haired past.
Ginger has fueled herself with a vegan diet since 2002...and she's not only alive but thriving. She decided to commemorate her 10 years as a vegan by writing Mistress Ginger Cooks: Everyday Vegan Food for Everyone. To coincide with the book release, Ginger has created a new cabaret show called Mistress Ginger Cooks: Love Songs to Turn Up the Heat, which premiered in Minneapolis in February 2014 and will be toured to other cities after the cookbook's release.
When she's not cooking up a storm in the kitchen or on the stage, Mistress Ginger enjoys meditating on our eternal oneness, entertaining burly truck drivers, and throwing wild dinner parties that end up on the 11 o clock news.

I'm a meat- eater and I've been seriously contemplating a vegan/vegetarian diet. Since I live in one of the top 5 fat consuming areas of the country with the negative health issues which accompany that statistic - the contemplation is wise. Over 4 years I lost100 pounds . Purchasing this book is a no brainer. Many of the recipes are familiar to me which have been "veganized". The ingredients are ones I totally understand which helps make the choice easier.
Some of them I have become a little more tuned in with such as nutritional yeast, tofu, and agave nectar because I have a son who eats vegan. The ingredients are easily found in the local supermarket. So at 60 it is a huge challenge to totally change a lifestyle. This cookbook makes it as easy as it possibly can. I have always been extremely resistant. However, something changed with this book. I truly believe Mistress Ginger a.k.a. my son., Justin Pavel Leaf and these wonderful recipes will give me an opportunity to live a healthier life. I'm proud of you JP-- Love the writings and pictures. Thank you Love you

If you've ever wanted to have more fun in the kitchen, try whipping up a lip-smacking batch of Gingersnatch cookies from my new favorite cookbook. Mistress Ginger is bawdy, bodacious, and bootylicious. Plus, the recipes are unique, delicious, thoroughly tested, well written, and easy. And each page is a feast for the eyes (as well as the tummy and spirit). I promise you'll love it (and you'll love everything you make from it)!

Such a fun book, and such great recipes.

Mistress Ginger hits the "sweet spot" with recipes that are both practical (it's stuff you'd actually cook) and interesting. And the book's production is gorgeous, with great photos. And Mistress Ginger's little "aside" comments are hilarious.

Even if you own a zillion other cookbooks, you'll be glad you got this one - it's really unique and fun.

I've been a plant based (vegan) eater for several years now and I own many (most? all?) vegan cookbooks….this has quickly become one of my new favorites! Mistress Ginger's writing style is hilarious (literally laugh out loud funny - and I'm not one to use the phrase "laugh out loud"…but it's true!). Most importantly - the recipes are absolutely delish! No weird, funky ingredients - most you will have in your pantry or fridge, especially if you're already eating vegan. And if you're not vegan, I think you'll still LOVE this cookbook for it's delicious recipes and entertaining writing style. Haven't tried all the recipes, but favorites so far are Tie-The-Knot Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie (ummm…the title says it all - chocolate/peanut butter/pie!), Sloppy Gingers (Mistress Ginger's take on Sloppy Joes - just good comfort food), and the Blueberry Stud Muffins (I used frozen blueberries instead of dried blueberries…yum!). Also….this is a really nice, quality book with glossy pages and photos (of the food AND Mistress Ginger).

If you are a fan of any of the Post Punk Kitchen/Isa Chandra Moskowitz cookbooks (my other fave), I think you'll love Mistess Ginger Cooks.

I bought myself this book and had to order another one when my daughter started reading mine. Mistress Ginger is hilarious and the recipes look delicious and easy to prepare. I have been interested in getting away from animal products in my diet and this looks like a good place to start. It's a fun book with seriously good recipes!

As a new vegan it's always encouraging to see veganism portrayed as something fun and positive, rather than drab and humorless. Mistress Ginger delivers on that score, with great recipes, cheeky photos that'll bring a smile to your face (unless your soul is constipated), and stage-ready double entendres mixed throughout.

Mistress Ginger knows how to have fun in the kitchen, and make delicious, healthy meals at the same time too. We met her at the Portland Veg Fest, and my daughter loved her humor and style. Of course we had to get the cookbook. We prepared quite a few dished from it together, and because it is a Mistress Ginger recipe, usually with a witty name and an entertaining recipe, my daughter will eat whatever it is. Not bad for a picky 12 year old.
