5.0 out of 5 stars Write Your Vision & Make It Plain, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
Venesha, is not just one of the many contributors to the growing genre that is the Urban Lit. She is one of the very few authors that can introduce you to herself as well as her characters. Venesha's writing style makes you proud she decided to follow her dream. With her detailed wording she makes her characters relatable while sewing mustard seeds of envy. Her stories of delectables like driving fancy cars, elaborate spending and meaningful yet deceitful sexual adventures are stories those not familiar with "the life" could only dream of participating in. Though Venesha is adamant Mistress Me, is not a tell-all, it reads as though the actresses Lisa Raye and Gabby Union had a lot to get off their respective chests. Allegedly!

Mistress Me is a great and exciting read. Should you need a break from the gun play, hood speak and use of profanity that dominates the genre and want to enjoy a book that sparks hood intelligent while never allowing you to lose your hoodstincs this is one to add to your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Is Fair in Love and Basketball, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
Venesha has taken the game of being a sideline ho to the next level with her stunning debut novel, Mistress Me. A candid look at behind the scenes action, this Hollyhood tale is filled with drama, action, lust and more desinger clothing than the law should allow. Read along as the lives of some of the movers and shakers in the NBA world take a whirlwind ride to hell and back leaving the reader to ask: "Is all really fair in Love and Basketball..." you're damn right! Venesha is definitely one to watch in 2008 as I look forward to reading her next release, Notorious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Venesha changed the game, March 4, 2008
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
While other urban fiction writers were creating tales of drug dealers and killers, Venesha breaks out with a story about a woman who is messing around with a married NBA player. Now, that was all I needed to crack open the book but the drama, drama, and more drama keep me reading until the end. This story is well-written and innovative. I think it's an excellent debut and imagine Venesha's off to a great career.

5.0 out of 5 stars (4.5 Stars) Great Debut From An Up-And-Coming Author!, May 2, 2007
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
Channing L. Golden is a sexy, powerful publicist to the world's top athletes. She's also become one of the freaks of the industry behind closed doors until she meets top NBA player Alonzo Butler. Alonzo wants Channing to take care of not only his professional needs but his personal needs as well. Now, five years and three children later, Channing is still sneaking around with Alonzo until his wife Sheila finds out. Channing has to decide if Alonzo can be trusted and is he really worth fighting for. Sheila is beyond disgusted when she finds out that her husband is cheating and has children with Channing of all people. Sheila plans revenge but will she get more than she bargained for?

Mistress Me is an exciting debut novel by Venesha. This author gives you a behind the scenes look into the glitz and glamorous world of professional athletes. Readers will be immediately swept away with the non-stop drama and action in this story. Channing was a character that you'll definitely have a love/hate relationship with. Instead of the using the usual cities such as Atlanta or New York, this author used Milwaukee as her backdrop to this story which was a welcome change. There is also a unique twist at the end of this novel that will shock you. Mistress Me is an exhilarating page-turner that won't disappoint. With this novel, Venesha is ready to take the book industry by storm.

I will never understand why women think if they lie, cheat, scheme and mess with another woman's marriage and eventually get the man that they will be happy. I further can't stand women who think that their S.ugar H.oney I.ce T. doesn't stink. This story had all the great makings of a really good book, but it wasn't exucated right. She needs a better editor, not for grammer but for story structure. This book was jumping all over the place and it didn't flow well. Plus there was just no liking the main characters. One mintue she was acting like a victim the next a royal Bytch, but mostly a bytch. One minute she was rich the next she's poor, one minute she's remorseful the next she's out for self. This book was just all over the place. I am not going to out and out dog the book but if she could ever get a professional to look at this book and tweak it and re-distribute it it woud make product.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of honesty, July 20, 2010
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
Honesty is a hard thing to come by in a story where the author doubles as the main character. Many times the author spends so much time trying to get us to root for them and want to be them that they wind up creating a fantasy. Venesha Hope did just the opposite in "Mistress Me." She told the brutal truth of being a mistress and the karma that comes with it. There is a price to pay for living the glamorous life. Even after the vows are exchanged there never really is a happily ever after. Each action comes with one payback after another. The other woman works so hard at being one step ahead of hurt and heartache that she winds up falling right into it. Chandler, the main character, learned this lesson continuously throughout the story, as did every other involved party. While it was almost impossible to like Chandler because of what she stood for, it was even more difficult not to respect her. She was a human. Yes, she did hurt, and no she wasn't superwoman, able to beat down every wife whose marriage she destroyed, but she handled everything that came to her with a capital 'H.'

The way the storyline was constantly changing made for an intense read. For some it may have worked better as a mini-series. There were some details you had to pay very close attention to or you would be lost until the very end. But Venesha made sure to give enough detail to make readers feel involved. I enjoyed reading her tale of honesty, and I'm looking forward to reading future tales from her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Our Man, July 19, 2009
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)
Sitting lovely because of her inside connections, Channing Golden is the publicist to have for any athlete. But publicity is not the only thing Channing seems to be offering. After her relationship with client Alonzo "Zoe" Butler goes well beyond the realms of business, drama ensues when Alonzo's wife discovers their relationship.

"Mistress Me" was truly the definition of crazy, from the characters to the all the twists and turns that you never see coming. Main character Channing was something else! She knew how to fix any problem or issue that came up, but on the other end, she seemed to be the creator of all the issues. Sex, lies and infidelity - "Mistress Me" has it all. It was a page turner. Page after page had you wanting to know what would happen next. The suspense was intense. This truly is a must read for anyone that likes drama.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ballers, Wives and Mistresses...Rated 3.50, July 31, 2007
This review is from: Mistress Me (Paperback)

Ballers, Wives and Mistresses...

Mistress Me by Venesha read like an expose' about NBA players, their wives and mistresses. There were times while reading, I wondered if the story was based on actual events. Channing L. Golden is a beautiful, educated and smart young woman. She works as a publicist to basketball players and can write her own ticket. However, her claim to fame is how many ballers she has bedded and her sexual expertise. At the dawn of the book, she finds herself and her three children being asked to vacate her home because Shelia, the wife of Alonzo `Zoe' Butler, the father of her children, has discovered that she is his mistress. After spending six years with him, he wants her gone as soon as their love nest is discovered.

I had a certain amount of difficulty understanding how a woman as smart and savvy as Channing could be caught up in a situation such as this. Was it because she was orphaned at an early age and separated from her twin brother, Chase? Or was it simply about money and possessions. I could never really grasp the reasoning because she had excellent foster parents who insured she had a good life and was well educated. She also found her brother in their teen years and resumed a close relationship and once they graduated from college, Chase became an NBA player and provided well for his twin sister. What I took from the story is that often people will do things until they know better or learn better.

Mistress Me was a fast-paced contemporary read, laced with vivid sex scenes, violence between women over men and the sometimes, extravagant, over-the-top lifestyle of NBA players. I recommend the book to those interested in a novel that reads like it was taken straight from the headlines.
