4.0 out of 5 stars Do You See Yourself as the Wife or Mistress?
Mistress by Meisha J. Camm is a fast-paced, read-in-one-sitting, filled book. I was so overwhelmed with the great descriptions of the characters, that I could visualize them. Mistress by Meisha J. Camm is a fast-paced, read-in-one-sitting, filled book. I was so overwhelmed with the great descriptions of the characters, that I could visualize them. A story well-told from the beginning to the end. Alexis is the main character and she grew up in a household full of cheating and bad treatment, so in her adulthood she follows what she saw. With low self-esteem and craving unconditional love, Alexis makes bad choices when it comes to men. Looking for love, acceptance and honesty she hooks up with Jarrad.

Jarrad is a smooth-talking, good-looking, man who knows which buttons to press to get what he wants from Alexis. Jarrad's only concern is getting his own needs fulfilled, not really caring how he leaves Alexis still craving for attention.

Settling for less over and over again, when will Alexis wake up and realize that she deserves better than the relationship she is in with Jarrad? Jarrad has a hold on Alexis that you would not believe and Meisha is so candid with the details you find yourself running, crying, and wishing for the best all at the same time. Can Alexis find true love? All she wants is a man to call her own or will she forever be known as the Mistress? This book is for anyone who has doubts about self-love, or is in an unhealthy relationship with a married man.

He obviously loves his family, yet, he continues with his uncontrolled lust forcing his wife to act out viciously. Will this behavior encumber little Alexis in her future?

Constant turmoil, empty promises, looking over your shoulders and late night creeps are all roles a mistress must endure while playing her role as number two. Is Alexis fed up enough with her understudy role or is she willing to continue on in hopes of becoming number one?

While reading MISTRESS I have to admit that I got confused very early into it. While I did find it to be a rapid read, I also found errors and characters' names placed in the wrong places and some very unlikely drama, in my opinion. While I can't say that any of that detoured my completing the book, I am questioning if URBAN BOOKS will continue to get my money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sex, Lies & Infidelity, May 27, 2007
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
Alexis Gibbs spent her youth watching her parents constantly fighting over her father's multiple infidelities. Alexis grows up only to find herself in a similar situation. She's found the perfect man. Problem is...he's someone else's man. Has she learned anything from the pain of her childhood? Will she settle for being a mistress?

Chocked full of drama, MISTRESS is a very quick read. At times, however, the timeline was confusing and the dialogue unrealistic. Even though, it has its moments and kept my attention. Not quite a four-star read but above three stars, MISTRESS is entertaining and worth the read. This was my first for this author so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But overall I was pleased and would like to read more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meisha Camm Does It Again!, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Mistress (Hardcover)
A page turner once again! The female characters in "The Mistres" portray a broken heart reality for women who've endured the concubine syndrome. You want to believe you are his #1, not second best, and he'll leave her soon...even after years of broken promises. Sigh...this book broke the mold of the stereotypical "mistress" books, it is a must read, ladies!

4.0 out of 5 stars Poor Alex!!, September 20, 2007
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
Like a couple of people said before me, the beginning was a little confusing but once the story got back on track I thought it was a nice read. Alex had it hard in the love department and I felt so sorry for her at the end. I couldn't believe Xavier and Jarrad! I wanted to kill them myself! Overall, I think this was a cool read.

This book taught me to love myself and I deserve better than a married man. The Mistress is an easy read. I sat by the pool and read it in one day. Meisha Camm's first book, Hidden Intentions was a page turner as well. In both of the books, there's at least one character you can relate to. I look forward to her next book. Keep up the good work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, July 12, 2007
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
I read the book as well and was confused as early as Chapter 3. The names were misplaced and it was highly unbelievable that Alexis, a doctor, an OB/GYN would get pregnant 3x and abort each time. The fight scenes she and her mom had with the other women were not believable either, especially the bookstore scene with Tina...nowhere does it tell us that Alexis had to learn how to fight as a young child but all of a sudden she fights like Ninja or other superhero.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Chick Can Attract Some Losers!, May 29, 2007
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
Growing up over the years, Alexis witnessed her father's numerous affairs. To most she had it all, both her parents in the home and she got anything she wanted, but she couldn't keep her father from creeping and her parents from fighting constantly. Grown up and in college, Alexis meets Jarrad, a smooth, sexy TV executive. They spark a relationship only to find out that Jarrad is married with kids. Unable to break away from the hold he has on her, she has to make a strong decision...stay playing second best or move on.

In my opinion, MISTRESS moved around a lot in time and that was confusing. Sometimes I couldn't figure out how old she was. The majority of the book was spent on Alexis' childhood. The book was supposed to be about her and Jarrad but focused more on her parents. I wish the author had discussed it and moved on concentrating more on Alexis as an adult and her relationship as a mistress. I thought some parts weren't even important to the story. I feel like all in all it was just ok and had enough drama to keep my attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!, May 21, 2007
By
R. Simmons (Virginia Beach, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
I really enjoyed Meisha Camm's first book, Hidden Intentions, so I knew that her next book would be a good read. I was right. I thought the book was so real. The author didn't hold back in her depiction of Alexis, the main character, and her day to day drama that Jarrad, the no good married man, put her through. I thought Alexis' character seemed so real that I forget I was actually reading a work of fiction. Also, for anyone who loves some steamy love scenes, this is also the book for you. The author was able to keep my attention with each chapter. The book was filled with surprises as well, I never really knew what to expect. Alexis and Jarrad were just a couple of the intriguing characters that the book depicted. I really enjoyed Mistress.

4.0 out of 5 stars Into Every Life A Little Drama Must Fall...., May 13, 2007
This review is from: Mistress (Paperback)
We are introduced to "girl next door", Alexis Gibbs, as she strives to become baby doctor extraordinaire. Along the way she meets the man of her dreams, the ever charming Jarrod Simmons. And just like Fantasia, all is not a fairytale, Jarrod's glitter is not all gold. Chock full of drama twist and turns, Ms. Camm takes us on a ride with Alexis as she deals with lying men, crying mamas and crazy wives. Then just when you think all is well, the ending will have you shaking you head at the sheer lunacy of love. Throw in a philandering father and a "take no stuff" mama, Mistress will mnake you sad, mad, and laugh out loud.

In this her second offering, Meisha Camm is truly carving her niche in the Chocolate Chick Lit genre.
