Book Description

May 5, 2003
In this last of the 14 classic lesbian novels by Sarah Aldridge, a staid, traditional college is pulled into the maelstrom of contemporary social issues when Professor Joan Etheridge is drawn into the nebulous world of the elusive Alice. Joan’s empathy for the seemingly lost and troubled Alice, surprising even to herself, leads her on an unexpected and life-changing journey. Contemporary voices for change assail Joan’s ivory tower, forcing her to examine her own ideals and helping her unravel her colleagues’ true motives and ethics. She must navigate the gulf between academic discussions of love, loyalty and personal values and real-world events demanding she take a stand on civil rights, reproductive freedom and most of all, consider where her own heart belongs

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Following the recent death of writer/publisher Anyda Marchant (pen name, Sarah Aldridge), at age 95, A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach is making available all 14 of the classic and groundbreaking Sarah Aldridge novels. Written between 1974 and 2003, the novels represent a melding of history, feminism and lesbian romance. The first novel was published by the fledgling Naiad Press, which went on to become the largest and most successful lesbian/feminist publisher in the country. Marchant was Naiad president from its founding until 1995.
In 1995, Marchant and Muriel Crawford, (her life partner of more than half a century) withdrew from Naiad and founded A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach, DE. The last Sarah Aldridge book, O, Mistress Mine , was written and published when the author was 92 years young. A&M Books, continuing under the leadership of writer Fay Jacobs is set to carry out the legacy begun by Marchant and Crawford - making all of the Sarah Aldridge titles available once again and continuing to give women writers a voice.

From the Author

"Publishing is not about the money, it’s about giving women a voice to tell their stories – and every book is an ambassador."
Anyda Marchant (Sarah Aldridge) 1911-2006

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it ..., February 14, 2010

This review is from: O, Mistress Mine (Paperback)
I have really enjoyed all of Sarah Aldridge's books. She has a very literate style that flows so very well. Her characters are evolved and almost uniformly fight for women's rights. In this book, the fight is on a college campus and a new professor, almost unknowingly and without conscience thought, gets into the middle by seducing then falling for an enigmatic young women.

I've read just about everything she's written and I'm saddened to see she has died. But she's left a great body of work about women and the struggles lesbians have lived to create the 'now' we enjoy. Not perfect, but far better than the era her books generally discuss. Though not aware at that time, and in some books, I wasn't alive, everything she writes gives me insight and an appreciation for lesbians of that era.

Her manner of writing about women loving women is very delicate and deeply loving. Aldridge's partner of over 50 years is still alive so consider purchasing a new book so the royalties will go to her.

**Remember - if you want your favorite authors to keep writing they have to be able to earn a living doing it, so, if possible, buy the book NEW to provide the author with royalties. If you're not going to keep it in your collection put it in the recycle bin to make another book.**
