This is another fine novel by Wellman generally based on the life of the famous creator of the Bowie knife. Jim Bowie was a larger-than-life character during the turbulent history of the early United States. Wellman wrote well before the advent of 'political correctness' so he pulls no punches in describing the attitudes of the day among those frontier people. Bowie was a slaver, and, like many of his contemporaries, saw nothing particularly wrong with that peculiar institution; nor, was he squeamish about gutting any opponent who challenged him to a fight. Like many men of those times he was tough, ruthless and independent, the sort of men who flocked to Texas during its fight for independence from Mexico. As in Broncho Apache, Wellman makes his character sympathetic without being sentimental. It's a believable characterisation and, overall, an enjoyable read.
