I find that one of the best ways to judge books is by the "bother your spouse" factor. Typically my wife is reading some book on a topic that I don't care for, and she'll interrupt me "Can I read you a passage?" or quote me some one-liner from her book that she found interesting. Over the course of a novel, she'll typically "bother" me, let's say, five times. My...

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, June 19, 2010

I find that one of the best ways to judge books is by the "bother your spouse" factor. Typically my wife is reading some book on a topic that I don't care for, and she'll interrupt me "Can I read you a passage?" or quote me some one-liner from her book that she found interesting. Over the course of a novel, she'll typically "bother" me, let's say, five times. My response is typically to chuckle, more often than not, just to humor her. I rarely "bother" her when I'm reading.

I found Misty's new book "Digging Deep..." so entertaining that for the first time I found myself "bothering my spouse" frequently. It seemed like I "bothered" her over 10 times, to share a line or a story from the book. Some of it was sharing insights into the depths of the volleyball world, and some of it was just hilarious stories that Misty has experienced.

Misty's book reminds me of the promo line from an old movie entitled "Stuart Saves His Family". The line goes: "You'll laugh because it's not your family, and you'll cry because it is." I did find myself laughing out loud, as well as having tears well up in my eyes while reading Misty's book.

I highly recommend Misty's book for its unprecedented "bother your spouse" factor. It's "bother your spouse" factor is so high that my wife can't wait to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Misty - The Untold Story, June 16, 2010
This review is from: Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life (Hardcover)
Misty's new book is a must-have. Who would have ever thought that behind her apparent happy-go-lucky personna belies a troubled upbringing? Her rise to pop star status, despite her difficult chidhood upbringing, is a phenonemenal story. For more insider details about her life, and that of other players on the professional beach volleyball tour, check out the groundbreaking book, "Order On The Court", that exposes this fascinating sport's struggles, while highlighting its triumphs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not deep enough, August 16, 2011
By
I didn't know much about beach volleyball before I picked this up. I've watched some games on TV, and of course knew of Misty May from Olympic coverage, but I am only starting to appreciate this sport. I wanted to know more about May after watching the gold medal match in Bejing...I wanted to know more about her and the sport.

There's no denying that May is an amazing athlete who has done great things within the sport. And she's had a rough journey to get to where she is. May doesn't hold back about the issues she's experienced (her parents alcoholism and abuse, an assault in college and many injuries) and is very open about how she feels about things, which makes this book a fast and interesting read.

But I struggled with this book because I found myself put-off by the attitude that comes across. I realize this is an autobiography, but it was too focused on how May sees herself as such an amazing athlete. As an example, she cites a time in college where she partied too hard and missed practice with a hangover. She says she realized immediately that this was wrong on her part (very true) but the reason it was wrong was because she was the star of the team and couldn't miss practice because the team would suffer for it (she actually says this). It was too 'I'm so great' for me. I've read several autobiographies from athletes that come across more humble and appreciate than this one.

There is also a lack of information about the olympics themselves. Arguably, her two Olympic gold medals are her greatest accomplishment to date. But she didn't win them on her own. There is very little in this book about her parter on the court Kerri Walsh. There's also precious little information about her Olympic experience (the gold medal match of the 2008 games in condensed into, literally, half a page and much of that is verbatim from the NBC broadcast).

I think it's great that May is willing to put her life out there for the public. And she is a great athlete and seems like a very generous person, but perhaps not such a great writer. Maybe if I were a bigger fan of hers before I read this (or a bigger fan of the sport itself) I would have enjoyed it more...but as it stands, it just rubbed me the wrong way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life (Hardcover)
Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life comes from a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and offers a vivid autobiography documenting her childhood and behind-the-scenes moments of her Olympic victories. From personal challenges she's never publicly acknowledged before to personal challenges, this is a 'must' for sports libraries and collections where Misty's name is already well known. Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Eyes Got Misty (Pardon the Pun), August 9, 2010

This review is from: Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life (Hardcover)
Misty May-Treanor is one of the most successful professional volleyball players in the history of the sport. She's won over 100 tournaments, two Olympic gold medals, numerous accolades, etc. etc.

I have been a fan of May-Treanor since the 1990s. I immediately pre-ordered my copy of her autobiography via Amazon.com. I wanted to compare her biography to other notable volleyball legends, Sinjin Smith and Karch Kiraly.

Overall, I would say her autobiography supplanted Smith and Kiraly's efforts as my top favorites to the top spot. Without giving away too many details, her book offers insight into her upbringing, personal life with her husband (pro baseball player, Matt Treanor), moments of greatness and sadness (you might want to have tissues near you) as well as offering life lessons.

This is a wonderful and inspirational book for any sports fan (especially young women).

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, July 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life (Hardcover)
I love Misty May Treanor and I am still working my way through the book. I thought I would fly through it based on enjoying her story. Instead, I find I am flying through it because there is a lot of repetition. So far, a lot of statistics of Misty's personal volleyball highlights (number of digs, kills, spikes, sets, etc). It is somewhat interesting but it reads like a lot of the "jock" books do. Not a lot of depth. It seems like every page she repeats what a gracious, caring and giving person she is. I already knew that and don't need to read it on every page. Hoping for a surprise in the book and will update my review if anything changes.

4.0 out of 5 stars MISTY DOES A SOLID JOB, January 8, 2011

I DID LIKE THIS BOOK BUT IT DOES REPEAT ITSELF A BIT TOO OFTEN. I THINK MISTY DOES A NICE JOB OVERALL AND THE BOOK IS WORTH READING. I REALLY FELT FOR HER WHEN TELLING ABOUT HER PARENTS BEING ALCOHOLICS. BOTH WOULD EVENTUALLY STOP BUT MISTY WHEN THRU SOME TRULY SCARY TIMES. HER DAD HAS BEEN A BIG SUPPORTER AND A STRENGTH IN HER LIFE. AFTER HER MOM DIED, SHE WAS DEPRESSED AND MISSED HER VERY BADLY. WHEN SHE MET MATT TREANOR, MISTY MET A BIG PART OF HER FUTURE. MATT WAS A VERY STABILIZING EFFECT ON HER. MISTY DOES NOT SLAM ANYONE IN THIS BOOK BUT A FEW SHOULD BE. HER EX PARTNER HOLLY WAS A PUSHY PAIN IN THE ASS WHO RAN THEIR TRAINING AS IF THEIR LIFE WAS AT STAKE. SHE IS ONE WHO SHOULD BE SLAMMED ALONG WITH AN EX COACH WHO GAVE MISTY THE WRONG ADVICE AND COST HER A SHOULDER INJURY. MISTY AND KERRY HAVE WON 2 GOLD MEDALS WHICH IS AMAZING. I ALSO LIKED HER TELLING ABOUT BEING ON DANCING WITH THE STARS. MISTY TRULY IS A GREAT PLAYER. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOSSIP OR SMUT, YOU WILL NOT FIND IT HERE. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR EVERYONE BUT MOSTLY FOR FEMALES.
