Superb Highlight Collection from a Little-Known Tenor, January 30, 2004
This review is from: Il Mito dell'Opera: Daniele Barioni (Audio CD)
I bought this disc on impulse, and haven't regretted it for one moment.
Daniele Barioni sang for the Met in the late 50's-early60's, and finished his (rather short) career in Italy, (La Scala was one of his stages), and other opera houses, worldwide.
His inspiration is (was) Mario Del Monaco, a tenor that he admired, learned from, and often tried to emulate. He was very often successful.
Barioni's emotive qualities in song are touching, to the core. Almost every track on this CD is fantastic.
In his version of 'Recondita armonia' (from Tosca), Barioni finishes with a kind of vocal power and passion that I have heard few capable of delivering. In the final phrasing of this aria, one hears Barioni projecting high, closing notes with unbelieveable passion and grace. I don't think I've ever heard a more powerful closing in 'Recondita armonia'. Just for fun, I timed the duration of the last series of notes; Barioni projects - continuously, without a breath - for a full 9+ seconds - with passion! He delivers!
Don't miss hearing Daniele Barioni sing these arias!
