5.0 out of 5 stars Mitsubishi are the 3D kings
Let me first say that I have 3 3D TV's. I have a 73" Mitsubishi DLP and a 55" Samsung LED. The Samsung TV wins in terms of motion and sharpness, but 3D? Forget about it...the Mitsubishi destroys it. 5.0 out of 5 stars Mitsubishi are the 3D kings, December 21, 2010
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
Let me first say that I have 3 3D TV's. I have a 73" Mitsubishi DLP and a 55" Samsung LED. The Samsung TV wins in terms of motion and sharpness, but 3D? Forget about it...the Mitsubishi destroys it. I don't know why, but DLP just mops up the floor with the competition when it comes to 3D. I don't know if it's the ridiculous size, the checkerboard 3D method, or what, but I don't even watch 3D on my Samsung anymore.

Now, this kit comes with 2 pairs of glasses, the 3D emitter, and a Disney sampler Blu-ray. The emitter is a box that plugs into a special port on your Mitsubishi TV and controls the lens swapping of your 3D glasses. This emitter is built into the Samsung 3D TV's, but for some reason it's NOT built into the Mitsubishi's. Probably to keep the cost low for people who want these TV's but don't care about 3D. The box is easy to hook up. It hooks into the back of your TV and then it must also be plugged into a wall outlet. It comes with a remote, but i just leave mine on at all times. I don't think it will overheat. There's a red light on the unit which your glasses must be able to see. I've run into no incidents of the glasses not working, even when swapping them between people and moving around the room. Also, my rechargable Samsung 3D glasses work on it, too, so that's a bonus. The quality is the same. (the Mitsubishi glasses in this box are not rechargable. They use the kind of batteries you find in a watch).

The Disney sampler disc is filled with trailers for 3D Blu rays from Disney, such as A Christmas Carol and Alice in Wonderland. There's not a lot of content on the disc, but Disney is doing a good job with their 3D, so it's a good showcase for your 3D TV.

If you're looking for the cream of the 3D crop, check out IMAX Under the Sea, A christmas Carol, and IMAX Space Station. I've found those to be the absolute best 3D Blu Rays you can get. Alice in Wonderland is ok, but it's a bit unbalanced and some of the CG + live action stuff was not composited very well. Films like Monster House and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs don't look great. When it comes to 3D, live action is always the best, because of the textures. When you have textures which are a lot of solid colors (as you get with animated films), you end up with ghosting...Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is very cartoonish, has a TON of ghosting. A Christmas Carol, which was made to look photorealistic - does not. It looks great. So make sure you pick up live action films, or at least ones that try to look live action, since they look the best in 3D. Oh, and stay away from Clash of the Titans in 3D! It was post-processed, and was NOT filmed in 3D and it just looks ridiculous!

5.0 out of 5 stars OH YEAH! Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack, July 20, 2010

I got the Mitsubishi WD-65C9 65-Inch DLP TV in November and have been waiting for the Mitsubishi 3d kit. I was able to order this kit from RC Willey and it was delivered today! I hooked it up in a matter of minutes (I also have 3d ready Blu-Ray player) and turned it on. The kit comes with a dvd that previews upcoming 3d Blu-Ray releases and I have to tell you, it is pretty amazing. The 3d is really fantastic and I can not believe that I am able to have this in my living room!! I LOVE IT!!!! When we turned it on...all we could say was "Wow" over and over again. I have one blu-ray 3d dvd movie - Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs - I plan on watching it tonight with my kids. I highly recommend the Mitsubishi WD-65C9 TV and the Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack Kit. Can't wait for more releases!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mitsubishi was made for 3D, August 2, 2010
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
I've had the Mitsubishi 3d starter pack for a month now, got it from Ultimate Electronics. It took 15 minutes to hook up to a Mitsubishi 73835 Diamond and the PS3. It is amazing and works perfectly. The 3D pops out nice and is very deep inside the TV, and it doesn't have a layered look. The depth is a smooth transition. The glasses are comfortable and light. The 73" Diamond tv is amazing with the 3D kit, it looks better than any of the 3D TV's displayed at the stores. At first I had a little trouble with flickering and the 3D would turn off and back on again, but I had the converter box sitting next to the center channel speaker. Once I moved it away from the speaker, I haven't had any problems. Can't wait until September when playstation adds the blu ray 3D software. I highly recommend the 3D Starter kit with the Mitsubishi DLP's.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3DC-1000 with Mitsubishi 73737, July 26, 2010

I received my 3DC-1000 from HSN last Friday.

I have a Directv HD22 DVR connected to a Sony STR DV1000 receiver (1.3 HDMI), the output of the receiver is connected to the 3d Adapter and then to the my Mitsubishi 73737 TV. The instructions say it will not work with a 1.3 HDMI receiver but it works ok through mine.

If you already have a Mitsubishi 3D ready TV and a newer Directv DVR (HR22, 23 or 24) it is a no brainer to get this kit. Since there is so little Blu Ray 3D content I would wait before getting a 3D Blu Ray player.

I'm guessing that 3D will be a hot seller by Christmas.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
When I ordered the 3D Starter Kit in late October, there was no mention on Mitsubishi's web site or in the manual that came with the starter kit that my model #WD-73833 TV required a firmware update. (This is a 2007 model, although my unit was built and purchased in 2008.) The kit arrived November 3rd. I spent many hours that day trying to get it to work, but all I got was a blue screen every time I switched the 3D adapter to 3D mode. Also, my PS3 wasn't recognizing that I had a 3D TV even though I had performed the 3D firmware update on my PS3 months before this. I contacted Mitsubishi the next day, and they confirmed they were aware of this problem and said my TV required a firmware update. I'm sorry, but something that important should have been on their web site as well as printed on Page 1 of the starter kit manual.

Anyway, Mitsubishi has since made it possible to download firmware updates for several of their models, but not for mine. I had to wait a month for them to ship a thumb drive to me so I could perform the update. Kudos to them for following through with their promise to make their 2007 model 3D TV's compatible with 2010 3D standards, but shame on them for promoting the starter kit as if it's all you need to start enjoying 3D on your Mitsubishi TV. Obviously, that wasn't the case for me, so you may want to check with Mitsubishi before you order this kit to see if your model requires an update.

So how is it? The first thing I noticed when I put the TV into 3D mode is the TV emits a high-pitched/high frequency noise, the screen loses some sharpness, the tint of the overall picture changes a bit, and the glasses make the whole screen look darker (just like when you wear 3D glasses in a movie theater). The tint change is especially noticeable when a deep black screen in 2D mode suddenly becomes a muddy greenish/brown in 3D mode. Edges, especially lettering, lose their crispness. To me, it's a bit like switching from BD to DVD, so this is disappointing. (I recently learned why this is: DLP TV's deliver half of the 1080p signal to each eye unlike other 3D TV's that deliver full 1080p to each eye.)

The 3D effect varies, of course, depending on the material. The animation with Timon and Pumbaa looked good in 3D. The clips from "Alice in Wonderland," "G-force" and "A Christmas Carol" each had a few good 3D moments. The 3D effect added a lot of depth to the Disney cartoon "Working for Peanuts," which stars Chip and Dale and Donald Duck. But let's face it, this cartoon wasn't created with 3D in mind back in the day, so there are no real WOW! moments. I would have preferred an exclusive theatrical movie (or several) in this kit like some other manufacturers are offering with their starter kits.

The 3D glasses fit comfortably over my own glasses, and I like the fact that they use common watch batteries so I can quickly replace the battery if it dies in the middle of a movie. For anyone interested in purchasing additional pairs of glasses, the manual confirms that Samsung glasses model #SSG-2100AB are compatible with Mitsubishi's emitter. It says to check mitsubishi-tv.com for additional compatibility, but I couldn't find any information on their site about this topic.

Overall, it adds a cool gimmick to your Mitsubishi DLP TV, but it's not mind blowing. (Perhaps I just haven't seen the right material yet, but for the purposes of this review I thought it would only be fair to discuss the software that comes with this kit.)

Update: I received a pair of Optoma DLP Link glasses yesterday. Although they're a bit heavier and not as stylin' as Mitsubishi's glasses, they're cheaper, don't require an emitter, and most importantly, they outperform them: Optoma's glasses restore the contrast level and deep blacks I was used to seeing on my Mitsubishi DLP TV in 2D mode; I can once again distinguish colors in dark scenes and make out detail that was lost with Mitsubishi's glasses. I plan to sell my Mitsubishi glasses now. I should have bought the adapter only instead of this kit. Oh well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing of Mitsubishi WD-73738 with the Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D Starter Pack, August 26, 2010
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
I have been looking at online reviews, forums and other places for reviews of the new Mitsubishi Adpater as well as the new Adapter pack (to eliminate any confusion, I'm referring to the Mitsubishi adapter pack that includes the 3D glasses). I purchased the glasses from a dealer out of New Jersey and found the adapter pack for $279.00 - normally priced at $399.99. I was able to get the huge discount through a coupon code on [...]. You may not be able to add this item to your cart as it was out of stock when I found this code, but I called the 800 number and they honored the price of $279.99. Five days later when their inventory was replenished, they shipped the item to me which I have since recieved (no sales tax and free shipping). My experience with electronics-expo was great. I was a little nervous to purchase from them as I had never heard from them before but took a chance on the deal and I'm glad I did. I noticed alot of people on amazon are unhappy about the "out of stock, available in two weeks" only to have two weeks go by and the shipping be delayed again. That DID NOT happen to me at electronics expo.

Now that I've given you a great place to purchase your adapter kit you can probably assume that I had a great experience with the kit. Let me first give you my setup:
I have the Mitsubihi TV (WD-73738) connected to the adapter Kit which is running to my PS3. I DID NOT have it connected to a receiver as I have to upgrade my reciever to one that supports the 3D Pass through signal - this was purely to test the 3D picture quality of some of the new 3D PS3 demos available on the playstation network. I will later give feedback on hooking it up to DirecTV and to a 3D pass through receiver.

First hook up the actual adapter kit (I already mentioned what I hooked up above). Setup the emitter and make sure you will be sitting the correct distance as outlined in the adapter kit's instructions (it does make a difference). Once you have the adpater kit hooked up you may notice it might not power on. If that's the case, you may have your HDMI in and out's mixed up - I made this mistake because I had the adapter sitting on it's side using the adapter stand and reversed the connections. Once you get the power light on, go into your Mitsubishi's TV Menu and go to 3D Glasses and enable them (the menus are slightly different from Mitsubishi's models but mine was located under Inputs). The screen's color may change slightly once 3D is enabled. If you do not have the option to click on the glasses or enable them (you should however see the glasses icon) then this is a sign that the adapter is not being recognized and you may have something that is not connected correctly. Be sure you have the emitter plugged into the back of the TV as well as the adapter itself. It's easy to forget a wire in the mist of rewiring a system to support 3D.

Once the adapter kit is powered on and you have a red light on the emitter itself; power up your PS3. I did not have the firmware update so I updated my console after doing the intial steps above. If you already have the firmware update and you power on your PS3 system you may be asked if you would like to register your 3DTV. If this is the case, follow the onscreen steps. If you still need to download the PS3 firware update, download the update in system settings. Please note: Some huge geeks who like running their own OS on the PS3 will no longer be able to do so after this update. I have always used PS3 OS so this did not affect me but I wanted to mention it because I'm sure some PS3 owners will not appreciate having their OS capabilities taken away from them.

Once you have downloaded and installed the PS3 firmware update, you should then go into your PS3 system settings tab. You will then need to go to your PS3 Video settings and make sure HDMI is set to be detected automatically. In addition to that (which is the step I was unware of) you must also go into your PS3 System Settings > Display Settings. Once you're there, follow the onscreen instructions. It will detect your 3D TV signal and ask you some additional questions about the size of your TV, sound settings, etc ... Once this is complete, download / purchase the online demos available through the Playstation Network (I downloaded Motor Storm, Wipeout and other titles because trying before you buy is nice). Once you have downloaded / Purchased Motor Storm 3D you should be asked if you want to play the 3D version of the game (this is how the Moto Storm demo was setup). If you are not given the opportunity to click "Play 3D" then there is a connection / setup issue. Be sure you've done the steps outlined previously (checking the correct connections, making sure you've actually set the Mitsubishi TV to 3D mode). You will then want to turn on the power button for your glasses - again this is easy to forget if you've been having some troubleshooting issues.

Once you're able to click "Play 3D" on Motostorm and you've remembered to turn on your glasses, you should not have to use the adapter's remote to go to the correct 3D signal as it should automatically detect the signal (at least that's what happened to me).

Althought the setup process sounds exhaustive, it really isn't hard to figure out. However, I would assume once you start introducing other variables such at a 3D receiver, the setup can become a bit more frustrating, but all in all it's not a difficult process to figure out. (I'm just trying to be thorough so other users don't have the same setup issues I had).

My overall impression of the 3D capabilities of Motor Storm was 3.5 out of 5 stars. I will give updates on the other games once I've played them but it was quite an interesting experience and one that did add to my overall experience of game play. I do however think developers will be challenged to come up with interesting ways of introducing 3D content into the gameplay experience. The comparison I will use is when games first came out for the XBOX 360 or PS3 as compared to the quality of games coming out today.

As of now, I have not tested the 3D Bluray Disney companion disc as I'm still anticipating the release of the next update for the PS3 to support Bluray 3D movies.

I hope this review has helped and I will be adding to it. All and all, if you can get the adapter at the place and price I mentioned above, you will be saving some extra money for upgrades / additional 3D glasses / or maybe a 3D PS3 game on the market. Best of luck to you all!

5.0 out of 5 stars DLP is the way to go!!!, August 2, 2010

This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
I have the 82 837 and 3D is def meant for the big screen. Not a little led or plasma. we all know by now that 3D mode makes TV a little darker, but its not a big deal and you can adjust brigntness for 3D playback. Games were fun. I liked baseball and Pain the least effect wise. Can't wait for Blueray firmware for PS3. And maybe with a little luck now that 3d is popular now, maybe Mitsubishi will address the darkening problem. I'm not holding my breath but don't listen to negative reviews on here. It's not that bad. Remember DLP is what you watch in movie theater. Great product!

This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
Just got my 3d package and set it up. The only thing I didn't fully understand is that my Blu-ray Player had to be disconnected from the TV and hooked directly into the 3D Adapter in order to enable the 3D Mode on my Mitsubishi TV. After I realized that, the set up was a breeze. The Disney demo Blu-ray is fantastic! Crystal clear color just like at the theater and good 3D effects. If you are wondering, like I was, I found out that regular 3D DVD movies (the ones using the red/blue paper glasses) do not work with this 3D technology. Guess we'll have to wait for more 3D HD Blu-ray movies. I have only been able to find "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" currently released and several other movies being released later this year.

Despite the lack of compatible movies I am very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3D in my freakin' living room man!, August 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
I've been using the 3DC-1000 kit for about a month now and find that it does everything it's supposed to and does it well. I have a Mitsubishi WD-73738 2010 model 3D TV that it's connected to. I consolidate all my HDMI sources through a Yamaha AVR which is fed to the 3DC-1000 then to the TV. I've verified I can play 3D content from Directv and PS3 games. The PS3 update is not out yet but I will be able to watch 3D blu-ray when it comes out.

REMOTE: I programmed my Harmony One with the 3DC-1000 remote and it works perfectly although there is no specific driver on the Logitech site yet so I just used a generic video box selection then learned the few required commands, about 5 I think. No big deal.

GLASSES: Comes with 2 pairs. I have a large head and the glasses fit a little snug, but not so snug they hurt my head when viewing for awhile. The on/off button is easily to access and turns on and off after holding a few seconds. I'm curious how long the battery will last with repeated use since it's so small. You can purchase extra glasses separately if needed.

INSTALLING: Pretty much a breeze since all inputs and outputs are well marked. You will likely need an extra HDMI cable to finish the install so order an extra when you purchase. My Mitsu TV comes with an emitter port as well.

OPERATION: Duh...power it on and if the picture isn't right press the mode button until it is. Monkey proof. The box needs to be powered on all the time for 2D to work which I don't understand. They should have opted for pass-through on power-off but didn't. This means it must be programmed into my Harmony remote as part of the power up process for all HDMI sources. Yes ALL HDMI sources including those w/o 3D content. Easy enough, but kinda senseless.

SUMMARY: 3D in my living room, are you kidding me man? I love it, and the coolness factor is through the roof. Yes I have a Mitsubishi TV and a 3D AVR (HDMI 1.4) and a PS3 and Directv and an Xbox 360 and a Wii so I gotta have 3D pretty much. Directv 3D programs look beautiful as do the PS3 games. Perhaps I'll update this post again when the PS3 is playing 3D BD's in September. I'm not sure if Xbox plans on supporting 3D but I don't think it matters with the PS3 and Directv doing so.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't pay for a starter kit you might not need!, September 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mitsubishi 3DC-1000 3D HDTV Starter Pack (Electronics)
Although all the items mentioned in the ad were in the package when it arrived, I found out afterwards that: 1. I did not need everything in this starter kit and 2. The glasses use batteries... something I somehow didn't notice on the product specifications. IF YOU HAVE A NEW 3D TV check with your manufacturer for any firmware updates on the TV that might change the need for a starter kit - mainly the convertor. After screwing with this kit for half a day and finding it didn't work, I called Mitsubishi (I just bought an 82inch 3D TV) and they told me that since I updated the firmware on the TV AFTER I got it, I could plug the emitter directly into the TV - in fact, it would not work if I used the converter. Nothing on Amazon for any of these products warn you to check the firmware updates available for your TV (or 3D blu-ray player) before purchasing this kit. I could have saved well over $100 by purchasing the emitter and glasses separately (and gotten the glasses I wanted - rechargeable). DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNTIL YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU REALLY NEED EVERYTHING IT INCLUDES... BUY THE EMITTER AND GLASSES SEPARATELY AND SAVE A LOT OF MONEY IF YOU CAN! Amazon has gotten terrible with the information it provides on the products it sells, often times leaving out important facts and specifications.
