1 Tragic Flaw For Me,
By SandmanVI (Glen Allen, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mitsubishi WD-73727 73-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
Wow, those 1st 2 reviews really are useless... I'll try to be brief but slightly less useless.Anyway I researched this TV and was drawn to a 1080p display over 70"... about time the true HD stuff got big. The picture is excellent but like most DLP things can look a bit jaggy if you watch something with a lot of small moving parts, like say a basketball game. As with other DLPs this display struggles bit with that. The contrast is excellent with a very sharp picture. Colors seemed great. The one tragic flaw that prevented me from getting this was that it won't receive from a 1080p source. Sorry but I'm looking for something that will receive native 1080p from a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player (or PS3).

Excellent video image, but not small,

This 73" TV has excellent video image. I wasn't able to get any 1080p source material showing on this since I didn't have any, but 1080i and 720p looked absolutely delicious. 73" is really too big (and the set is heavy) for most living rooms, but if you have a dedicated home theater with enough distance from the couch to the wall, this is just fabulous. I'm not a sports fan but I have to admit watching sports on this is quite an exciting experience. I like movies and TV shows, and those with plenty of action sequences are done justice on this set. The price is right for such a gigantic TV, too.I haven't looked into the HDMI issue a couple other people brought up. I'm putting off getting any next-gen hi-def DVD player until the format war settles.

Very good TV, but best to wait, or look elsewhere,

The reason to shy away from this one? It does not accept a 1080p signal via HMDI. But, it does have a beautiful and bright image. Those that don't plan to upgrade to HD-DVD or BluRay (don't do it yet though, wait for 2nd generation players, the current ones seem slow to "boot up")in the next few years will be very happy with this set (until then). If you are shopping for a TV this large, you are better off to wait a few months for some new models to come out. If you insist on a DLP television now, check out HP models. The 58" MD5880n and 65" MD6580n are able accept a 1080p signal via HDMI.

DLP - not the best,

The marketplace is just filled with high-def tv choices nowdays and each choice has its ups and downs. Being a DLP means this set will be affected by the rainbow effect. Still, a really good initial setup should minimize that. I'm impressed by the wide variety of color adjustments this set boasts...rather than simply hue and tint you get individual color adjustments which should make for a very natural display when set up properly. As far as accepting or not accepting 1080p inputs is concerned it's a non-issue right now since the Toshiba HD-DVD decks only put out 1080i and the Samsung Blu-Ray decks downcovert from 1080p to 1080i and then upconvert back to 1080p before sending the signal out...so neither of those devices sends a native 1080p signal out, anyway! Perhaps in a couple of years that will become a real issue, but for now it just isn't. If that is the only thing stopping you from buying this set, REALLY the only thing, then you should probably buy it. It is going to upconvert whatever signal it receives to 1080p and you will see as good a picture from your hi-def dvd player as with any other set on the market since all 1080p is, at present, upconverted.

Ultimate pleasure gone sour,

We purchased our Mitsubishi WD-73727 a little over a year ago and couldn't have been happier with the purchase. Fantastic picture- like being at the movies all the time. Then in June of this year (2007)we noticed a halo effect creeping into the shadows of all the programs we were watching. We called for service under the warranty and were assured that the problem would be quickly taken care of. Three service calls and many calls to Mitsubishi later have left us with an unwatchable tv (the picture changes color and jumps all over the screen now) and a lot of broken promises from Mitsubishi. The service company blames Mits for not sending the needed parts and Mits just out and out lies to get us off the phone. We have since learned that there are a great many people with the very same problem as us, all with the same treatment from Mitsubishi. The store where we purchased the set is now dropping the whole line out of customer dissatisfaction and we here in mid-September have an uncertain prognosis for our $5000.00 purchase. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!!!!!

Great for awhile then buy bulbs for the rest of your life,
This review is from: Mitsubishi WD-73727 73-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
In April 2006 we purchased this massive TV because my wife is a trekkie and loves to see all those SyFy shows depicting and documenting space (aka The Final Frontier). For the first 2 years it was perfect - although I was not too happy about the fake 1080p that only works if using it with a laptop that plays bluray - ARGHHH!Year 3 the bulb had to be replaced and the extended warranty covered that. Year 4, a month after the $400 warranty expired, the bulb had to be replaced again. Year 5, a dark diagonal line appeared and remains today at the top 2" of the screen that I have no clue what it is or how to fix it. Year 6, today, the bulb has to be replaced again, and the front panel has not been responding correctly for the last few months. Therefore I am glad to see that newer TVs cost 4x less than what we paid in 2006. The store is advertising this TV updated with REAL 1080p in 3D with a pair of glasses for under $1,000. We may get another one at this price because Sharp's model is $2500 w/o 3D.

3 Major repairs in a few months = Design Flaw,
This review is from: Mitsubishi WD-73727 73-Inch 1080p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
Do your research!!! Many companies have stopped manufacturing rplcd&dlptvs(rear projection lcd & dlp tvs) because of their failure rates. For more info, search the web keywords "optical block or light engine repair". In all fairness, Mitsubishi is not the only brand w/ OB or LE failures. I will not name the other companies.I was a proud happy owner of this Mitsubishi WD-73727. The screen size is massive and takes over the room it's in. Movies and sports were so fun to watch on this hdtv. The matte finish minimized the glare from windows and light sources. But the problems started less than two years later. A very expensive part called the "optical block" failed not once, not twice, but THREE times in 14 months(see the customer pic I posted). Each repair meant staying home an afternoon while the certified tech took apart the tv to install a replacement part. $1500-2000 for each repair was cover by my extended service plan. Normally I'm not a fan of extended warranties. But I'm glad I had one for this tv... I was so fed up that I exchanged it for a smaller 55" wall-mountable LCD. Also, this model was advertised as "1080p", but it DOES NOT play 1080p. I had a bluray and HD player hooked up w/ HDMI 1.3 cables, and my WD-73727 did not display 1080p from these sources.
