3D TV

The world's largest 3D Ready HDTV for the home, Mitsubishi's 82-inch WD-82738 1080p DLP Home Cinema HDTV utilizes the same core DLP technology that's used in the vast majority of 3D movie theaters. DLP technology is up to 1,000 times faster than LCD technology--providing for a more realistic, sharper 2D and 3D viewing experience. It comes equipped with 3D-ready viewing technology, providing the best option for enjoying 3D content in the home.

It also includes Mitsubishi's Smooth 120 Hz technology for more fluid, natural and smoother fast moving images and x.v.Color--a new industry standard for HD Color, co-developed by Mitsubishi). Other features include StreamTV Internet Media (with access to the VUDU HD movie rental site and more), three HDMI inputs, stereo speakers with 20 watts of total power, and Energy Star 4.0 qualification.

Key Features

  • 82-inch Digital Light Processing (DLP) panel uses Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing technology for rear-projection TVs to create the picture you see on screen.
  • 3D TV: Experience the new 3D technologies applied to many recent movies and video games. Immerse yourself in your favorite video game, movie, or sporting event displayed in 3D (requires optional 3D eyewear).
  • 1080p Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels)

    Plush1080p upscaling
    Mitsubishi's Plush 1080p upscaling.
  • StreamTV Internet Media access provides instant access to an extensive library of high-quality entertainment and social media content. Grab your remote and choose from over 100 different streaming applications, including VUDU HD movie rentals, Pandora, Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Twitter, Associated Press, The New York Times and more. VUDU Movies features the world's largest catalog of HD movies with more than 3,000 movies, and its HDX video format is the only streaming 1080p HD video with high-resolution surround sound available directly on Internet-connected televisions.
  • Plush 1080p 5G 12-Bit video processing converts lower-resolution signals to 1080p to eliminate jagged pixelated imagery.
  • Smooth 120 technology for more fluid, natural motion from fast-moving video such as sports, action movies, and more.
  • 6-Color Processor takes the three primary colors (red, green, and blue) of the video signal and extracts three secondary colors (cyan, yellow, magenta) in order to individually process each color for greater accuracy.
  • DeepField imager constantly adjusts panel brightness and contrast to optimize the picture.
  • EdgeEnhance technology enhances horizontal and vertical edges for a more precise picture with minimum distortion.
  • 2 stereo speakers (10w x 2) for 20 watts of power
  • Integrated HDTV tuner receives both over-the-air HDTV broadcasts (received via an antenna) and non-scrambled digital cable broadcasts, including non-scrambled HDTV cable programming.
  • HDMI Control (CEC): HDMI devices with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) capabilities may be compatible with the TV's HDMI Control feature. Compatible devices can receive control signals through the HDMI connection, allowing the TV's remote control to operate some functions of these devices.
  • Easy Connect function automatically recognizes when you plug in a device and prompts you to assign a name to it. The TV ignores any unused inputs, so the result is an uncluttered menu where you can easily find and select connected devices by name.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
HDTV Size chart

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

4.0 out of 5 stars 82" Mitsubishi First Impressions and Setup November 24, 2010
By Frank
Amazon Verified Purchase
Spent yesterday setting up our new Mitsubishi 82" WD-82738. First off, the TV was packed very nicely, no damage and one heck of a big box. Having owned DLP TV's in the past I can truthfully say this is by far the nicest one we have ever owned. The picture is bright and clear and considering how the prices for such a big TV have become so affordable I would rate this TV as a bargain.

Things that I had problems with were minor but I am going to mention them. For the first hour after plugging in the TV I didn't have sound. I had a great picture but no matter what I did with the sound settings on the TV it didn't produce sound. Since my only input was my satellite receiver I wasn't sure if it was the receiver or the TV... so I connected it to the Internet. Again, no sound. At this point I was ready to call Mitsubishi when I read a little paragraph on the rear cover page of the install manual.... SYSTEM RESET. Held the power button in for 10 seconds and when the TV restarted... it had SOUND! I think it might be nice if they would have made this a little more obvious... wasted a lot of time diagnosing before I realized that this was something that needed to be done.

Only other negative... it says in the Specification Sheet that it has an OPTICAL Digital Audio Output... it's not Optical... or if it is it sure doesn't look like my other optical connections or cables that I already own. But it's getting connected to a surround sound system so I guess this feature isn't that important... but they should change this in the advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars In use now for 3 weeks and we love it. May 27, 2011
By wd82738
Amazon Verified Purchase
Before buying this TV I did research well for about 3 months before finally buying here on Amazon because of its almost best price and the 30 days return option and free shipping and no taxes!

On the AVS Forum I found about 338 pages in their forum about all aspects of this tv, the updates, the mistakes customers can make (e.g. overheating so the TV switches off automatically) .

It came with the latest firmware revision, or at least it had it installed when I first checked it. It is connected to the internet via wire, not wireless.

The Picture Quality
Understanding that a DLP is NOT to compare with a LED/LCD.Plasma TV we find the quality of the picture outstanding. Calibrating to our needs was no problem.
You need to know that these TV's come preset in a "torch-mode" but that is in no way the best picture the screen can show you. So take your time to find the best settings for you, its all there, you just have to find it and use it!

A simple basic basic calibration took me about 30 Minutes.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the PQ is depending on the source. If you TV station sends a SD signal don't expect wonders here. A HD signal will show you a crisp and clear picture and gives us the CINEMA feeling my wife and me so much like. ( she has her masters in cinematography, so no endless discussions about getting this TV at all...what a lucky man I am!)

The Design
Even though it is HUGE the footprint is rather small for a DLP. The very small frame gives the impression like the screen goes right to the edge and almost disappeared when watching in a darkened room.

The Settings
This TV has all advanced settings a pro needs for a pro-calibration!

The Remote
could be a bit more spacious and with light or so, that's where they saved some money here. It woks but could be better.

The lamp
Replacement is "affordable" for a bout USD 100.00 or so, I will install an additional small computer fan to the housing of the TV to prolong lifetime of the lamp and to prevent from auto-shut-off when temp is raising inside. This could happen when the back is to close to the wall and not enough air circulation is given !

the 3D Effect
-----not yet tested---

The Speakers
are just so OK for this TV, a surround sound setup is highly recommended anyway.

All in all there is no reason to take one star off.

I will update in case there is something to report here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad bulb/ballast August 10, 2010
By JC
Amazon Verified Purchase
Have had the TV for ~2 weeks now and haven't been able to watch for more than about an hour tops, and getting shorter. Apparently there is something wrong with the bulb/ballast. The picture just drops out and the green indicator turns solid red. The book says change the bulb. After the run around with Mitsu it took 5 days to get a new bulb and that didn't work. Now I have to wait another ~4-5 days minimum to have a tech come out to look at the set. This was a common problem a couple years ago, would have thought they'd have fixed it by now. Unless I'm just lucky and got the one bad apple.
