Swedish mittens,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mitten Book : Delightful Swedish Country Mitten Patterns with Traditional Designs to Use for All Your Hand or Machine Knitting Projects (Paperback)
These mittens are beautiful. The patterns are a bit vague, and the "adult" mittens turned out very small so you have to adjust accordingly. Nevertheless, they are by far the cutest mittens I have ever seen; I strongly recommend this book for more experienced knitters.

Disappointing,

The biggest disappointment was the black and white photos. Only a few of the photographs are in color so it is impossible to appreciate the beauty of these mittens, get a feel for "traditional" Swedish coloring, or have a jumping off point to consider any color combinations, your own or to copy. To top it off, although two of the eight mittens in the color photos were done in three colors, the charts are all black and white. It isn't that easy to tell from the chart where to change colors to switch from flowers to leaves. I'm sure I could experiment, but if a mitten is shown in three colors, at least indicate three colors on the chart. The book gives minimal directions for mittens for children and adults plus 32 black and white photos with charts and 8 color photos with charts. Although different cuffs are shown in different photos, there are no directions for these cuffs. There is a short bit of history given on knitting in Gotland, the area of Sweden from which these pattern designs come. Truly, I don't see that the pattern designs look any different from others I've seen in generic mitten books. All in all a disappointment and unless you are really into knitting mittens not at all worth the inflated price this book is going for in the resale market. I would recommend "Folk Mittens" by Marcia Lewandowski, "Magnificent Mittens" by Anna Zilboorg and "Mostly Mittens" by Charlene Schurch. These books all have color photos (100%),color coded charts where appropriate, and more than one style of mitten. "Folk Mittens" has the most complete instructions of the three and the most variety.

This was the first book that I used to make mittens- checked out from my library. The charts are clear, and there are endless possibilities to mix and match cuff patterns with body patterns. If you want to learn how to make beautiful mittens, this is the book!

Beautiful, intricate and challenging,

I bought this book as a beginning to knitting. It is always challenging creating socks and mittens - and these all use very fine yarn - extra time-consuming. On the other hand, the patterns repeat, so it becomes almost like a meditation to knit. These mittens are very special, and the person you knit them for will really appreciate the beauty and depth of work you put into it. This book is also lightweight and small, just right for keeping in your purse.

This is a delightful book. Some interesting history and beautiful designs that can be used for other knitted projects. The instructions are a little general, but experienced knitters can probably work with them.

This book is looking so shy and small. But that is maybe because it was made when the resources were small. I fell in love with it at once, and started from the beginning with the first pair presented. I have decided to knit all of them. As a neighbor to Sweden, some of the patterns are known to me, and I can see that they are a bit different from ours. My ex of the book is from a library in USA. If someone has reprinted it later, you can buy it, Then you can bath in colors and creativity. The patterns in the book are mostly without colors, so that is up to you!

A friend showed me her mittens from a pattern in this book. LOVE. I am so happy to have found a copy. The designs are classic, and easy for any moderately experienced mitten knitter. If you knit mittens, you need a copy of this book.
