The Mitten Tree is the story of a lonely old woman whose children have all grown. One day she notices a young boy who doesn't have any warm mittens. She knits some mittens for him, and places them on a tree near his bus-stop where he can find them. An old woman watches the neighborhood children at play, but one child has no mittens to keep hands protected from winter's chill. The woman sits down and begins to solve the problem. After finishing one pair, she keeps knitting until she can secretly fill a tree with mittens. She in turn receives a surprise. This book is great for teaching kindness and compassion. After reading this book, a kindergarten class had a visitor come to demonstrate knitting. As she knit a pink pair of mittens, a boy sidled up to her and asked, "Do you have blue wool, too?"

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read to a child book, July 3, 2008
This review is from: The Mitten Tree (Hardcover)
I am a mittenlady. I knit mittens. I have read this book to over 3,000 children. If you have a knitter in your community, have them read and demonstrate, every teacher should have this book on their shelf. I wouldn't be without it. It is by far my favorite childrens book

3.0 out of 5 stars Positive Message, July 18, 2010
This review is from: The Mitten Tree (Paperback)
The Mitten Tree is the story of a lonely old woman whose children have all grown. One day she notices a young boy who doesn't have any warm mittens. She knits some mittens for him, and places them on a tree near his bus-stop where he can find them. She never tells anyone about the mittens, and eventually she begins knitting for all the kids at the bus stop. Eventually, her supply of yarn is depleted. Then, one day she finds a basket full of yarn at her doorstep. From that day forward, she continues to knit for all the children.

The message in this story is clear. A lonely woman's heart becomes full when she performs an anonymous act of kindness for someone in need.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely, charming tale of goodwill, February 22, 2010
This review is from: The Mitten Tree (Paperback)
"The Mitten Tree" is a beautiful book about a woman named Sarah who notices a little boy in need of mittens waiting for the bus. She decides to knit him warm mittens so he can participate in the fun and joy of winter. This leads to a branching out of mitten projects which uses up all her colorful yarn, but leaves her "with a full heart." The miracle of "The Mitten Tree" comes when Sarah's gift returns to her in the form of a wonderful basket of new colored yarn balls. Illustrations for "The Mitten Tree" are soft, delicate, textured treasures that greatly enhance this lovely, charming tale of goodwill.
