Product Description

The Mitutoyo 103 series outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a ratchet-stop mechanism for uniform pressure during adjustment. The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001”, with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

I have several Mitutoyo micrometers and use them all regularly. They are precision made and easy to read unlike some other makes.

I've been calibrating micrometers for years and in my experience no 1" micrometer comes close to the Mitutoyo 103-260 for value. If someone tries to tell you that a Starrett or Tesa/Etalon/Brown & Sharpe is worth spending more on, they're either remembering the good old days, or haven't used one of these. We use about a dozen of these micrometers where I work, in a press room where they spend most of their days coated in coolant and mistreated. They're occasionally overtightened and I'm pretty sure some have been dropped, yet every single one we've put out there still works as well as the day we got it. Every one still reads accurately to within ±.0001" over its entire range. Sure, after a year they sometimes come back for calibration a little bit off zero, but that's easy to fix, and I see the same thing from every other brand.

There is not another micrometer, not another precision measuring tool of any kind, which I would recommend as a better value than this. For under $100 these are an absolute steal and a Starrett or Tesa will not be more accurate, only more expensive.

After using a brown and sharpe this one feels much better. It is very accurate. I am using it for my engine rebuild and I get repeat measurements to the .0001!
