Product Description

The Mitutoyo Surftest SJ-210 (178-561-02A) is a portable, handheld surface roughness tester with a 2.4-inch, color, backlit, LCD touch screen that displays in vertical or horizontal orientations, and left- and right-hand data views in 16 languages, measures 39 parameters, and has a micro-SD card that stores up to 10,000 results. A surf tester, also known as a profilometer, surface roughness tester, roughness gage, or surface finish gage, is a device used in metrology to inspect and measure surface roughness in shop, metalworking, manufacturing and quality control (QC) applications.

This surface tester has an Ingress-Protection (IP)-53 rating for water and dust resistance. It displays total and sectional measurement results, assessed profiles, evaluation curve, bearing area curve (BAC), amplitude distribution curve (ADC), and waveform results. Profile images can be zoomed up or down. The Surftest can display results in sixteen languages. An integrated micro-SD card stores 10,000 measurement results, and supports screen capture. A built-in battery allows for approximately 1,000 measurements with four hours of charging time. The unit’s memory stores up to 10 measurement conditions, and one measured profile. Operational keys on the front of the unit and under the sliding cover are labeled, and display settings have left and right arrow keys. Keys are displayed on the front of the unit, and additional, less frequently used keys are hidden under the sliding cover to prevent unintended operations. The unit has a stylus alarm that indicates when cumulative measurement distance exceeds the preset limit. The detachable drive unit can be separated from the display unit with a cable for maneuverability.

The SJ-210 has auto-calibration that can be initiated with numerical value entry, and gain adjustment for color clarity. An auto-sleep function can be activated to automatically turn the power off, if there has been no operation for 10 to 600 seconds. Measurement conditions are saved when power is turned off. The unit has parameter customization for calculation and display. It has a “go/no-go” (G/NG) parameter judgment with maximum value of 16% rule option, and ANSI standard deviation selection option.

The Surftest SJ-210 (178-561-02A) is password-protected to protect settings and to prevent unintended operations. It has a USB 2.0 interface with digimatic Statistical Process Control (SPC) cable for data collection, RS-232C output, and can be connected to a printer and a footswitch. A memory card slot supports data storage. It works with Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems, and Microsoft Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The unit includes a roughness specimen, and comes with a carrying case that has a belt loop attachment.

A surface roughness tester, also known as a profilometer, surtest, roughness gage, surface finish gage, or surf roughness tester, is a device used to inspect and measure surface roughness of flats, rounds, sloping planes, and recesses in machined, ground, or polished metal and non-metal surfaces. It is used for metrology in shop, metalworking, manufacturing, and quality control (QC) applications. Surface roughness testing is a type of form measurement that identifies surface profiles such as grooves and recessions, commonly known as peaks and valleys, of a surface. A roughness tester traces a surface profile using a skid-type (contact-type) method with a tracer tip such as a diamond stylus and piezo-electric detection to calculate roughness. Common types of parameters include Ra (roughness average), Rv (maximum profile valley depth), and Rsk (skewness), and assessed profiles. Profiles can have valuations such as cutoff, sampling, traversing, and evaluation-types of lengths. A surface roughness tester can have analog or digital display. A surface roughness tester can be portable, handheld, or desktop-type.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

I have used a Mitutoyo roughness tester about 6 years ago at a previous job. I currently have a need for measuring surface roughness after grit blasting metals. After searching, and finding the best price on Amazon, I ordered this Mitutoyo SJ-210. It is an incredibly simple to use tester that is packed with functions. The color screen is crystal clear and shows a graph of the roughness measured. Anyone looking for a robust easy to use tester should definitely look into the Mitutoyo SJ-210, you will not be disappointed. Also, look into the adapter to mount the probe onto a height gauge, makes for even easier measurements.

After searching the net for a good portable roughness tester, the SJ-210 was the best and relatively cheapest. I found best price on Amazon. It practically does all roughness measurements in a longitudinal direction (watch for the model number because there are many SJ-210 out there).

I also ordered the DP-1VR Digimatic Mini SPC Processor, which only prints numbers and a statistics report, which is very brief. I wish I found the SJ-Printer 178-421A which I searched the entire net and didn't find any place that sells it. The printer gives detailed report with profile graphs. I had to download the Mitutoyo PC program to compensate for this issue, but printing on a dedicated printer is much more efficient and can be used as a report for the client.

It works perfect. Too bad the price was 300 dollars over the real price :(

The product is the best and nothing else will replaced it!

Great tester, this replaced the phase II srg that we tried before and it very easily outperforms. It is easier to calibrate and use and can easily switch between units of measurement easily as well. The only downside is that unless you're measuring a flat piece that fits under the tester, you need to construct a stand for it to sit on.

Good tool. the battery life is good, the display looks nice, the stroke is long compared to its competitors. The ability to generate reports and profile graph is really nice. the menus and controls are a bit cumbersome and non-intuitive. I recommend this product... in my opinion the most powerful of the "portable" units.
