Product Description

The Mitutoyo 700-126 plastic caliper is a digital caliper with upper and lower jaws for inside and outside measurements from 0 to 150 mm/0 to 6”. Easily-read digital LCD characters and durable plastic construction make this caliper useful in a wide range of settings, including nurseries, medical offices, laboratories, and trade workshops. This caliper has accessible zero-setting and on/off function control buttons and uses both inch and metric measuring systems.

The 700-126 has the electrostatic capacitance type linear encoder. It measures inner (ID) and outer diameter (OD). Its inch/metric system uses a 0.001”/0.1 mm gradient. The caliper’s length is 235 mm, jaw depth is 40 mm, sliding LCD is 60 by 34 mm, and beam width is 16 mm. Range is 0 to 6”/0 to 150 mm, resolution is 0.001”/0.1 mm, and accuracy is rated + or – 0.008”/0.2 mm. Also included are zero-setting and power on/off function buttons. An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumbwheel makes fine adjustments and a thumbscrew locks the scale’s position. Response speed is 1,800 mm/s. The SR44 silver oxide cell battery (938882) lasts approximately two years with normal use and is recommended to maintain constant voltage levels.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, and/or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers all give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used for measuring size differential between two objects, as well. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

little disapointed January 3, 2011

I buy this plastic caliper because I work with parts that can be scratched with easy.

This "cheap" Mitutoyo caliper is not so good as described. The jaws are not so good finished: does't close well and a present a notable irregular light gap when complety closed. Has a parallel error of about 1.5 - 2 mils between the point to the inner part of the jaws. The points of the both jaws are not well matched and present diferent lengths. I've to rectify the edges with a small and fine file.

In the other hand, it is very light, the display is nice clear and easy to read.

I think that for the price, one can get a much better metal caliper of other brands.

Happy new year for all

Overall, this a nice digitial caliper for the money. I did some research on digital calipers before buying, as there are a lot of cheap digital calipers available. However, reviewing the many inexpensive ones seemed to consistently show that many had problems with zeroing out reliably, and also the cheap models will continue to drain the battery even when they supposedly power themselves off. I read an article showing that the cheap calipers were still actually measuring while "off", but that the screen was just shut down. The Mitutoyo, while slightly more expensive, reportedly has a exceptionally longer battery life. While you do have to remember to turn the unit off manually, I have accidentally left it on overnight with no problems. I have had no problems with zeroing--the unit is quite repeatble.

In the future, I would probably purchase one with measuring capabilities to the 100th of a millimeter place, as I use mine for measuring diameter of gemstones. It would be nice to see units past the tenth of a mm place. If you need less accuracy than that, this is a great model to purchase. The plastic jaws are good for avoiding gemstone chips, and are molded slightly more square than the jaws of my manual dial caliper. Overall a nice buy.

Quality Product March 16, 2010

I purchased this product due to it's plastic slider clamps which prevent scratching the surface of certain items I measure. I did not know this when I ordered, but this Caliper is made in Japan and the plastic and electronics are of high quality. It measured accurately and easily.

I recommend this to anyone who wants a good quality plastic caliper.
