Accuracy: As far as I can tell, virtually perfect. Mitutoyo specializes in measurement equipment, so this is no surprise. The lengths of the rulers are as specified. Mine even exceeded the catalog accuracy specifications and are accurate to at least .001 inch if not better. Because of the accurate length and precision placement of the markings, you can measure reliably from either end of the ruler. The width and thickness specifications are approximate, but you aren't supposed to measure with those sides.
I think my only complaint, and it is very minor, is that the graduation marks are a bit thick for what they measure (albeit still thinner than most rulers). They appear to vary slightly between model, but are approximately .006 inch thick. On 1/100 inch graduations, the markings are actually wider than the gaps. I would also like to see a beveled model, so that the markings are flush with the surface being measured. Granted, this is only an issue for more precise measurements, and can usually be overcome by holding the ruler perpendicular to the surface. Anything that requires more accuracy than these provide probably shouldn't be measured with a ruler.
Construction: Very high quality. The rulers are very slightly bowed, but not more than I'd expect for the material and size, and certainly not enough to affect accuracy. The markings are etched, so they won't scratch off like many rulers.
Aesthetics: The color is not a pure black as I was expecting, but more like uneven blued steel, and appears more metallic in certain lighting. The contrast of the markings is great. All my rulers were shipped with scratches, but are so slight that they are virtually unnoticeable.Read more ›
The corners are pretty sharp for a ruler, which isn't bad (perfect right angle).
I feel like I will never need to buy another 1" ruler again.
The only problem:
The black color came off. I'm not sure why. It didn't chip off or anything, it seems like it oxidized and turned transparent or something. Now my ruler is a slightly darker shade of the stainless steel.
If I knew it would change color I would have gotten the one with Black writing (the not black chrome finish version of the same thing)
This is very strange considering that Mitutoyo generally makes very high quality measurement tools. I almost suspect these to be fakes, but then I can't believe Amazon would sell them. You can get a better rule for $2 at Epstein's.
On a positive note, the white on black markings are easy to read.
After ordering this little rule I will think twice before buying any similar items made by Mitutoyo.
Suprised to have this mediocre quality from Mitutoyu. First item from them, always got poked fun at by coworkers for not buying their amazing quality products.
Would recommend still if this was just a bad part. It'll get used and abused anyways.
The white graduation lines and numbers provide a clarity I have not found on similar rules. The 32nds, 64ths, and the 50ths are clear and quick to read accurately. I do wonder about the usefulness of the 100ths scale: though very clearly marked they are (necessarily) so closely spaced I find them useless and need to select another tool in it's place. While somewhat flexible there is a stiffness that makes it easy to hold and easy to place for measurement. So far the finish has shown no sign of degradation so am fairly confident that it will last.
Save for the questionable usability of the 100ths scale I find this to be wonderful tool and would, with clear conscience, recommend it to anyone.
