Editorial Reviews

Raven presents a splendid Double CD by renowned New York folk-rock singer / song writer RICHIE HAVENS, combining his first (Mixed Bag, 1967) and second (Something Else Again, 1968) albums recorded for MGM's folk label Verve Forecast. Born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY, Havens moved to Greenwich Village in 1961 just as the folk boom began to explode. His contemporaries included the likes of Fred Neil, Bob Dylan and Dave Van Ronk. Prior to his crowd-stirring performance at the Woodstock festival in 1969, these recordings saw Havens establishing his reputation as one of the most distinctive performers of the era. With his unusual open-E guitar tuning, unmistakable thumb-chorded strumming and distinctive smoky voice, much of the music features an organic and melancholy vibe. In combining inspirational self-penned songs such as the strident anti-war song 'Handsome Johnny', 'No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed' and 'Somethin' Else Again' and traditional tunes ('Run, Shaker Life') with exuberant covers of material by Billy Ed Wheeler ('High Flyin' Bird'), Tuli Kupferberg ('Morning, Morning'), Dylan ('Just Like a Woman', 'Maggie's Farm') and Lennon / McCartney ('Eleanor Rigby') Havens affirms his intuitive connection with the song writers' craft. Havens continues to tour and record. With superb quality audio, color booklet and detailed liner notes this is a must for fans of earthy and literate folk-rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag is a perfect classic + best CD sound ever September 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Although I do frequently scan Amazon reviews for both edification and amusement, I write them only on occasion. In this instance, I write to counterbalance the (so far) negative sole review posted by Mr. Chandler. For myself, while McCartney's (and George Martin's) own version of Eleanor Rigby was stunning, I have always been more emotionally moved by Havens' version. Also, Haven's cover of "Just Like A Woman" is exquisite -- in contrast to Dylan's incisive acuity (which is wonderful in its own right), Havens' interpretation reveals a much more vulnerable and warm-hearted if hurt narrator. And his covers of "San Francisco Bay" and "High Flying Bird" became the standard versions that many singers used as the basis for their own cover versions. But, chacun son goût; people who love music often disagree about their likes and dislikes and that is, in great part, what makes art and its appreciation so enlivening.

I have listened to Mixed Bag, however, since shortly after it was released in 1967 and I have literally never stopped throughout the subsequent decades as it is a virtually perfect music album. Now, I am not saying that it is a paradigm changing album, like Sgt Peppers, or Highway 61 Revisited, or Elvis Costello's "My Aim Is True," et al., or one of the To 10 records of all time etc. Rather, Mixed Bag is one of those magical debut albums where, after playing Greenwich Village folkie clubs and touring for 6 years, Havens fully realized his interpretative voice, every song is strong both melodically and lyrically, and the arrangements are varied in instrumentation and rhythm but yet there is a unity throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value March 23, 2013

Two in one. Mixed Bag, Richie's earliest release. My favorite song of his, Handsome Johnny. I lost both of these record albums in a fire and it was great to find them together in one release. And Richie does a great version of Eleanor Rigby, Just Like A Woman, San Francisco Bay and Follow. (And I'm still a Beatles fan and a Bob Dylan fan. Richie Havens does quite a few of their songs well.) Thanks for having this available.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lotta Haven February 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I've been tracing Richie Havens songs after recently seeing an old movie, "Coming Home" which included "Follow". There's no soundtrack album. Havens' interpretations are certainly unique. His voice and pacing wraps around your heart like a big hug. It's a nice surprise stumbling over this Raven release here on Amazon, since Amazon doesn't include it on their list of Richie Havens albums. Everytime I start looking for somebody's music - Gene Clark of the Byrds, or Gregg Allman, or the Monkees - it turns out Raven has been there first and with the best compilations available. They even have AS I COME OF AGE by Crosby Stills Nash & Ringo Starr. Anyway, Havens' second album is hard to find and at the moment it's available only here. Either I don't think it's very good, or perhaps this is just too much Richie Havens for me.

UPDATE: I see I'm getting "thumbs down" from Amazonians for this review. And here I do a public service by honoring Raven Records' good taste. It makes it hard to get up in the morning. :(
