It seems like every spring several indie bands break out of obscurity and become my favorite bands for nearly the rest of the year (last year, for me, it was Fitz & the Tantrums, Dr Dog, and Foster the People). Tanlines is one of those bands for me in spring 2012--bouncy, simple orchestration, fast-moving, with nuanced song-writing that, as another reviewer notes, reminds me too of New Order (in only the best ways) or Erasure (in the range of Tanlines' vocalist). "Not the Same," "Green Grass," and "All of Me" definitely deserve a listen.

This is enjoyable, upbeat, sunny electro-pop that somehow doesn't feel like straight ahead electro-pop. Yes, the beats are danceable, the hooks are sunny and electric, but the songwriting feels like it comes from a more confessional place, from a singer/songwriter sort of vibe, and that is pretty refreshing. Vocally, I am reminded a little of Vampire Weekend in the delivery and vocal tone, and some of the repeated snare drum rhythms remind me of South African/Soweto rhythms, especially in "All of Me". Not that this is in any way a "world music" sort of album, but it is rhythmically interesting. Hints of Technique era New Order influence can be found in the wall of background guitar/synth, and the rich production that still seems pleasantly rough instead of overproduced--lots of nice details, but not done to death. Overall, a really enjoyable album, and well worth a spin. 5 stars for how happy it makes me when I listen to it, for the catchy rhythms, and the great tunes. Check it out!

Pretty much love this entire album. It's great party music and good for running and working out as well. It's just got a terrific beat and infectious grooves to it. I'd place it in the electropop arena of things. The only thing I don't care for is a couple of the songs seem to have a Caribbean or Jamaican vibe to them, which is not my personal preference. But all in all, great album.

this is probably one of the best summer albums you can ever listen to. they're good live, too, but too political so save yourself the upset by buying the album and blasting it in your car.

I'm a sucker for synthpop so when I read Tanlines described that way I had to check them out. Yes this is synthpop in the sense that it's catchy electronic music that you can dance to. However, most of their songs have a melancholic tone to them and some have almost a world beat flavor to them. This isn't a criticism. I think it adds something to the music. I like a little bit of gloom and the world beat makes it more interesting. There's really not a bad song on this disc and if you like this type of music you'll love this album and for $10 it's a steal.

I admit it...I fell for the Entertainment Weekly blurb I read that mentioned these guys would be a good update for those who yearned for the day of Depeche Mode (synthesizers, dark, moody music, great lyrics..etc). I recently purchased this CD on Amazon and I've given it a couple of tries but nothing leaps out and hooks me. If you really want a couple of bands that took music like that of Depeche Mode and evolved it to the next step then do yourself a favor and buy the band Iris, Camouflage, or Cause and Effect. These bands are awesome. This band?.....a little too poppy for me however some of you might like it still.

This album is great! It's full of a variety of sounds, some retro and some modern. If you like drums or electronic beats, I suggest this album.

This album is fun, upbeat, and catchy. I love the vocals, the music is interesting with some 80s synth and world beat drums in there...most of the songs are great. I'm glad I purchased this.

I'm sure this well end up being one of my favorite albums of the year, very good all the way thru with a few tracks that stand out to me as excellent "Brothers," "Green Grass," "Not the Same." I saw them live recently and it was a great show. Well worth the $7.
