A sequel of sorts to 2001's Mixed Live, this 2nd Session for the Moonshine label's popular series continues in the same exuberant, aggressively "up" vibe that has characterized Tall Paul's work for years. After making the leap to international superstar DJ territory in the late 1990s, TP has spent the '00s trying to do what only a few of his ilk have pulled off: conquer North America. Rather than producing a more song-oriented artist record for the task, à la Timo Maas's Loud or BT's Movement in Still Life, Paul has gone the other way, favoring live DJ mix sets to in-studio efforts. However, while capturing the feel of TP's blistering live set is an admirable goal, both Mixed Live records fall short. Few DJs play to the crowd's lust for the beat more blatantly and successfully than Paul does, but the only way to fully experience his interaction with the dance floor is in person. 2nd Session does feature a splendid final 20 minutes, with some tasty selections and transitions along the way, like Tomaz vs. Filterheadz' "Sunshine" bleeding rhythms into Warrior's "If You Want Me." But when Paul breaks it down and makes the people beg for a beat on Hatrixx's "Pressure," the tension that should be there isn't, and Paul's mix slows to a crawl. 2nd Session also includes a DVD presentation of the set, featuring a 5.1 surround sound mix. --Matthew Cooke

5.0 out of 5 stars Tall Paul Does it again, January 27, 2003

Some people bash this album, and every other Mixed Live album, because it does not capture the true experience of actually being there. I say that this and Tall Paul's other Mixed Live album come very close. In my opinion, the album starts out allright with the exception of Richard F.'s Down and Dirty(which pumps me up). But once Shiny Disco Balls ends, the bassline drops and a whole new beast forms. Begining with Twister's Revolution, the set gets down and fast revealing a very trancey side. The only change in my humble opinon would be to move Down and Dirty to later in the set. But all in all this album is great and the second best of the Mixed Live series, only trailing Tall Pauls first effort in the Mixed Live series. But then again, this is my humble opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential album in my collection by far!, February 18, 2003

Let me start with this...I was blessed with having one of the greatest clubs in usa just an hour away BUZZ....at this venue many of world class djs filled the slots every friday. One of those djs happened to be Tall Paul. This guy completely rocks live and can get the crowd into the groove with his sets. well on with the cd........AMAZING!!! Although i have all the kind words about Paul this was the first cd i actually went and bought of his and boy am i glad i did. I dont see why people knock on the sound of the crowd being too much on this cd. In no way is it to much to me, i think it is a perfect balance. Afterall, why buy the "mixed live" album if you dont want to hear a crowd? Tracks 1-4 are great as it picks up the pace, track 5 i thought was cheesy at first but am now growing to like it alot...track 9 is one of my favorite songs now "why?" by PIMP. Listening to the sound of peeps chanting "tall paul" to the beat halfway through the track puts you there on the floor.I could go on and on with the list of why i love this mix but i wont. Oh yeah I cant forget to mention that the bonus dvd disc sounds amazing on a surround sound system, the quality is stunning. Do yourself a favor and go buy this cd you shouldn't be disappointed.

I'm having to order a new copy as it went bye, bye when my portable CD player got stolen. All I have now is the DVD 5.1 Surround.

It's one CD I do listen to alot and enjoy listening to both the regular CD and the DVD version. Even though I don't have 5.1 surround at home, it has a richer mix than the standard CD and in the process, you get more of the crowd coming through which is cool. Also, I hear an air horn once or twice, which I never noticed on the standard CD.

Tall Paul is excellent as a DJ and listening to him live gives you that sense of being there. What I like about this CD is the fact that the bass is not just the mixed bass from the mixing board, but the ambient bass from the speakers in the house as well.

I first became familiar with him in the CD "That Club Mix" where he does a cool, progressive rendition of "Precious Heart" and that lead to seeing what else he has done.

I do highly recommend it for lovers of the Techno/trance/electronica et-al genra of music.

The opening track is great and each track after that is just as good. There are no bad mixes on the entire CD.

Being that the DVD disk is a bonus disk makes this a great bargain as well. Pick it up!
