Book Description

June 2009
The first Mixed Martial Arts book to be featured in the new, exciting, and completely original Sports by the Numbers series!

THE SPORT: The short and tumultuous history of the UFC and modern Mixed Martial Arts is one of the greatest stories in all of sports. From its spectacular beginnings to its deathbed, to reemergence as the fastest growing sport in the world, Mixed Martial Arts covers it all.

THE FORMAT: The presentation created by the authors distinguishes Sports by the Numbers from everything else available today. The book offers ten compelling chapter introductions and one thousand numbers full of statistics, stories, and oddities that blast new fans with the force of a Bas Rutten liver shot, and wipe away the cobwebs of the diehards as if they were waking up from a "Cro Cop" head kick.

INTERACTIVE: Numerical entries tagged with SBTN All-Star or SBTN Hall of Fame logos are scattered throughout this book. These logos indicate that more information is available at our web site www.sportsbythenumbers.com. Readers and sports fans can then visit our site and participate in the SBTN blogs and conversations regarding those numbers, creating an interactive community.

- Why did Hermes Franca agree to fight Manny Reyes for one dollar?- How did Matt "The Law" Lindland get his nickname?- Why did Jason "Mayhem" Miller mention Sacagawea after his WEC contract was fulfilled?- How many strikes did Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch combine to throw at UFC 87?- Why was Ian Freeman's victory over Frank Mir at UFC 38 both inspiring and terribly sad?

Find out all the answers and more in Mixed Martial Arts-a book for every fan and sports history reader who loves sports and wants to know more about their favorite fighters and promotions.

About the Authors: Daniel J. Brush, David Horne, and Marc CB Maxwell, also known as the Sports by the Numbers Guys, are the award-winning authors of the Sports by the Numbers series. 5.0 out of 5 stars Serendipity in Action - Awesome Book!!!, June 23, 2009
By
Dave H. (Lakenheath, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mixed Martial Arts: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) (Paperback)
I don't feel the need to share my viewpoints on too many things, but I couldn't resist on this one. This is a truly enjoyable book. In a word, the best way I can describe this book is with the word Serendipity: "the gift of being able to make delightful discoveries by pure accident."
That is exactly how this book worked for me...discovering facts that are at times funny or jaw-dropping, at other times downright unfortunate. It's a highly entertaining way for a growing fan to catch-up on need-to-know info, as well as "insider" facts and figures. The book also works well in large doses - to settle in for a "good read", but it also works well in small doses - in your spare moments...or work breaks.
The chapter introductions are my particular favorite sections of the book. This is where Zac Robinson gets more opportunity to show is talents as a very insightful writer. His ability to express both "insider" and "outsider" perspectives is impressive. I look forward to reading other books from him, which I understand from his outstanding Blog are in the pipeline.
Buy this book - you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast and furious look at the world of MMA, August 24, 2009
By
This review is from: Mixed Martial Arts: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports (Sports by the Numbers) (Paperback)
This is a great book for mixed martial arts fans -- truly unique, the numbers tell the best stories, from the truly bizarre to the utterly astounding. All of your favorite fighters are guaranteed to be here, and the stories you read about them will highlight the many reasons they are your favorite fighters to begin with. There are a lot of MMA books out on specific fighters, but if you want a fast and furious look at the whole sport, then this is the book for you. And if you are a trivia buff, the author also has an MMA trivia book on the market that is equally outstanding: Mixed Martial Arts IQ: The Ultimate Test of True Fandom.
