Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—A little boy with wildly curly hair navigates the social terrain of being a biracial child. Diggs's short, choppy, rhyming verses convey the busyness of a kid who likes "to go FAST!" All through his day he encounters people staring and asking questions. "See, my dad's a deep brown and my mom's rich cream and honey. Then people see me, and they look at us funny." Diggs very adeptly conveys the feelings a mixed child experiences and also brings a message of acceptance without being didactic. Evans's mixed-media watercolor and pencil illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to this well-written, fun story of acceptance, friendship, and love. The text, colors, and design make this a good choice for read-alouds, but there are many details in the artwork (usually containing the word mixed or a synonym thereof) that make it good for one-on-one sharing. VERDICT A stellar first purchase and a necessary book for all collections.—Jennifer Steib Simmons, Anderson County Library, SC

Review

“Mike's unerring sense of self (“I'm a beautiful blend of dark and light”) and the powerful love that surrounds him make this a rewarding, valuable read for families of any makeup.” ―Publisher's Weekly, starred review
“[A] well-written, fun story of acceptance, friendship, and love. “Some kids call him “Mixed-up Mike,” but the protagonist makes clear that he isn't mixed-up at all―just mixed . . . Mike's confidence in his own appearance and coolness as well as the way he proudly embodies diversity, including a certain level of androgyny, make this a refreshing read. Evans' integration of rough-textured fabrics into lively and colorful mixed-media illustrations will make readers want to reach out and touch them . . . If all kids had the confidence about who they are that Mike has, what a wonderful world this would be.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review
“For the millions of mixed-race Americans who have to endure the constant questioning of their identity, [Mike] has an answer: “I'm a beautiful blend of dark and light, / I was mixed up perfectly, / and I'm JUST RIGHT!” . . . The story's joyful message will resonate with multiracial readers and their families, leaving them with the cheeky takeaway: if you have a problem with me, it's your problem.” ―Booklist

This is a fantastic book! My daughter is biracial and it's so refreshing to find a book she can relate to. The messages of self-acceptance and embracing diversity are such a vital lessons for children to learn. This book does a fantastic job teaching those lessons while remaining lighthearted and fun. The illustrations are beautiful and capture the essence of childhood.

I ordered this product via Prime shipping and received it in 2 days packaged in an easy to open small shipment box. I ordered this book for my 18 month old daughter for Christmas, I am white and her father is black and heard about this book when Taye Diggs was on a talk show talking about it and thought what a cute idea! The book is beautiful- the illustrations are bright and colorful and the story is super cute. I am so excited to give this to my daughter on Christmas and for us to read it to her! I definitely give this product 5 stars!

Wonderful book for mixed children. My son loved the encouraging comments and lovely illustrations. There are only positive reinforcements in this children's book. My son is only 3 years old, but just LOVED looking at the vibrantly colored illustrations after I read him the words. I couldn't help but glance over at him as I was reading and seeing his eyes light up and just the biggest smile you have ever seen stretch across his face. It is important to let children know they are perfect exactly how they are. They are perfectly perfect. Perfectly blended and perfectly loved. This book shares all of that in terms a small child can understand. Way to go!

Great book for mixed kids. We read it nearly every night. Mike looks exactly like my son did when he was 2-3!

This a book meant to boost the self esteem of bi/multi racial children. I think it's very unfortunate that it does not address any of emotional/social issues. Research has shown that these children are significantly more likely to have mental health difficulties. As a biracial woman, I feel very strongly that inter-racial couples need to have ongoing issues with their children about the inevitable moments when acquaintances and strangers say, "What are you?" I found each of these experiences to be humiliating. I grew up in a liberal, racially diverse city and still struggled with my race.

The book could have maintained an upbeat tone but still giving children assertiveness skills to respond to these intrusive comments in a way that makes them feel comfortable. This book and several others send the message: Your skin is beautiful! It's cool being biracial! This does not correspond to reality. Strangers and people your child knows will comment on your child's skin tone; that is not “cool”. Also, I really don't get the emphasis on the color of one's skin being linked to self esteem. I don't think white children are taught--Peach skin is beautiful! and I don't get this approach with kids of color.

This is a wonderful book that all kids will love. It's written very well, reads very well and is full of amazing illustrations that will keep your child involved in the story. It also speaks to the interracial couples that have children allowing confidence to become something that the child can grow with.

I love this book. My son is mixed and I want him to grow up knowing that race doesn't matter. This book is perfect for any parents that like to read to their kids especially if your child is mixed.
